With Kerr's retirement the Spurs have the opportunity to add another player to take his spot on the active roster next season. Here are a few ideas...

http://www.nba.com/media/act_stephen_jackson.jpg
Jackson, Stephen

He doesn't seem to be finding the $$$ he thought he would this summer. I think Utah and Denver will make him decent offers but nothing approaching 5 years and $30 mil. Yet Denver just gave Earl Boykins a 5 year deal so the Nuggets may prove me wrong. If Jack was willing to sign for something reasonable (3 or 4 years, ~$4 mil per) then I think the Spurs should take him back. Mercer would probably have to be disposed of. Also, it's not guaranteed that Turkoglu will re-sign with the Spurs next summer so there is some value in bringing a guy like Jack back. Proven player in the clutch. Knows the Spurs system and will play defense. A great part of the Spurs' perimeter D was having guys 6'7" and taller at the 2 and 3. He's only 25 and does have room for improvement. He's shown he's been willing to work on his game.

http://www.nba.com/media/act_mike_batiste.jpg
Batiste, Mike

He was on the Spurs' summerleague team in the RMR. He's a restricted free agent but Memphis is definitely overloaded on the perimeter. The Spurs can only offer him the minimum outright. A nice young player with some upside.

http://www.nba.com/media/act_vladimir_stepania.jpg
Stepania, Vladimir

He has a good shot for a player his size. He averaged 7 rebounds in 20 minutes a game with the Heat last season. He's lasted two years with Riley and a player doesn't do that unless they will play defense and put up with the rest of his BS. If you could get a 7'1"/255 lbs center who can pull down 7 boards a game for the minimum...why not?

http://www.nba.com/media/act_dermarr_johnson.jpg
Johnson, DerMarr

He was on the Grizzlies' summerleague team. He performed well according to the reports I read. Memphis is inundated with swingmen so perhaps that won't be an attractive destination. Of course the Spurs don't exactly have a lot of room themselves but Johnson is trying to prove that he can still make it in this league.

http://www.nba.com/media/act_voshon_lenard.jpg
Lenard, Voshon

Instant offense. He'd be the type of guy Pop could call on to put some points on the board if all else fails. I think he will be looking for and will probably get a more significant role on another team but you never know...

http://www.nba.com/media/act_terence_morris.jpg
Morris, Terence

He was on the Spurs' summerleague team in the RMR and I don't have the stats in front of me. Basically you bring in him if you think you can groom him into a future role player. At 6'9" he's worth a look for a perimeter player.

http://www.nba.com/media/act_tyrone_hill.jpg
Hill, Tyrone

Willis was effective last season but he's 41 years old. I think the Spurs could benefit from having a little more size on the bench. Hill would be a nice fit and Pop has a good relationship with him.

http://www.nba.com/media/act_mark_jackson.jpg
Jackson, Mark

I've seen some concern expressed on this board about the lack of a 3rd point guard. I don't really see it, but if the Spurs are so concerned then perhaps they could bring in someone like Mark Jackson. At his age he might be ready for a Kerr-like role.

http://www.nba.com/media/act_reggie_miller.jpg
Miller, Reggie

Why not replace Kerr with another old dude known for hitting clutch shots? Miller will probably get a significant deal from Indiana but hey, if Malone & Payton took less money for a better shot at a ring why not Miller? Unlikely yet interesting.

And last, but not least...

Hill, Miller and Stepania are out of our price range.

Looks like Kiki may be kicking Jack to the curb in favor of Lenard.

I wonder if our offer to Jack is still on the table.

I want one more true point and a Bateer-like practice dummy.

With Manu, Bowen, Hedo, Mercer and Brown all in the mix, I don't think there's room at the Inn for Jack at any price -- even if they ditch Mercer.

Most of these other guys are out of the Spurs' price range. Whoever they pick up will probably spend most of the time on IR, as I think Devin will make the roster (but time will tell).

One more big man and another point would be good assurance on the bench though.

There's only so much money out there and about half the teams are over the lux tax threshold. There will be some quality guys looking at minimum offers. A player like Kerr could've been had for the minimum last summer and we found out what his true value was in the playoffs.

Stepania already got a lowball offer of over two million from Miami. Dallas is expected to enter the bidding as well.

I agree there will be some bargains out there, but there isn't any room for these guys in the rotation and they certainly aren't going to dislodge anyone from the first 8. That's why I think it's more realistic to focus on SL/training camp fodder; I'd like to get some young guys with upside if at all possible.

Gill and Ernest Brown top my list of guys who would accept riding the IR and developing.

I agree. It's time to start developing a some new young blood.

I think Stepania might be the sleeper in that group.

If a team could sign him for around $2million per season they might have a real steal.

I think the Spurs have already closed the book on SJax, but perhaps they should consider throwing some phat cash at R Miller in a 1-year deal. No one could say the Spurs have no clutch, gutsy shooters if he was on the team.

Unfortunately the Spurs don't have anything resembling phat cash at this point.

Andersen, Chris

His qualifying offer has reportedly been rescinded by Denver and he has not received a guaranteed contract offer from them either. A Texan with a ton of athleticism and hustle. No offense to speak of.

If you squint hard enough, you might think he's Javtokas.

Johnson, Ken

Definitely gone from Miami after all their big man signings. Similar to Andersen; better defender from what I remember. Excellent blocker in college. Needs beef.

I'd like the Spurs to look at Chris Andersen and Mike Batiste. Batiste has a chance to be a Stephen Jackson type player with his raw skills and athleticism. Andersen might be the best follow dunker in the league, but he needs a lot of work to be an everyday player.

Also getting a player like Bimbo Coles or Brian Shaw would fill the emergency point guard role who will also not mind sitting on IR.

Uche Nsonwu-Amadi

NBA size and actually has a post game. Didn't get a fair shake on Memphis' SL squad as all his time went to West's busts-to-be Archibald and Trybanski.

A veteran PG would be good to have around, someone who could keep the Spurs winning against the non-elite teams at least.

I don't see the need for another old bigman. The Spurs have Horry and Willis for that role already. Bring in someone a little raw and see what the Spurs can do with him.

I'd like to bring in any of Gill, Okulaja or Batiste.

Gill is the PG we need just for some security.

Okulaja offers soem grunt.

Batiste, as mentioned above could be turned into a Jackson-esque role player if groomed.

Lenard is probably out of our priceline, as is Barry.

Berman states: "Jackson, 38, played last season in Utah but has ruled out returning there. Jackson lived in a hotel last season, not willing to move his family to Salt Lake City. The Jacksons now live in L.A., and he'd love to sign with the Clippers, now minus Andre Miller, or San Antonio, which lost Speedy Claxton."

----------------

The same day, Jackson also did a NYTimes article promoting his "Wheelchair Classics" that didnt mention any potential destinations...(see the "Rebounds" section of the "Updated, Artest Says He Respects Van Horn" article by Chris Broussard at link (http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/06/sports/basketball/06nba.html)

Mike Batiste signed today with Greek A1 League power Panathinaikos.

(I think ChumpDumper mentioned yesterday) Okulaja signed with Badalona Spanish team DKV Joventut after the RMR.

Odd. I would have thought that Batiste could have secured an NBA job somewhere. I mean, even guys like John Wallace are being signed. Oh well, good luck to him.

Did Okulaja sign another long-term hard-to-buy-out contract? :wink

Oyedeji, Olumide

Played on the Spurs' Boston SL squad. Very strong, good leaper. Still raw after three years in the league, but only 22 years old. Fluent in Russian and French.:p

I almost forgot about this guy. A lot of potential. I watched him play several times for Wyoming, and Chump's right, he does possess a good post game, and definitely has NBA size.

The guy is still learning to play the game, and would really benefit from a tutor like KWill, and from watching and playing with THE man himself, Mr. Duncan.

CD, as always, good thought.

I completely agree with that.:)

Our rotation is already set, and the capspace design for next summer is pretty nicely set with the current line up. SJax signing would only blur that off.

Starters :

C Rasho
PF TiMVPeat
SF Bowen
SG Manu
PG TP

Main Backup BIG : Malik Rose
Main Backup Swingman : Hedo
Main Backup PG : Carter

Spot up duty :

Horry -against the likes of KG, CWebb, and Diggler
Willis -against Snaq O'Meal himself
Mercer -against team with plenty perimeter power, or in need of instant perimeter scoring

Developing project :

Devin Brown
? ( a PG )
? ( a BIG )

Former Asheville Altitude point guard Eddie Gill led all free throw shooters who had more than 10 free throw attempts by converting 17-of-18 (.944) for San Antonio at the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue. Gill finished second in steals per game in Utah with 2.00. He was also among the league leaders at the Reebok Pro Summer League in Boston, finishing seventh in assists per game at 5.5.

Eddie Gill would be a good pickup, coupled with a young project big man.

I don't think we add another swingman to the team as we are stacked at the 2/3.
