So I assume that what everyone thinks the Spurs need is a 3&D guy who has the ability to defend multiple positions, all the way up to a lot of PF's. Even though a lot of people hate him, Ariza has been that. But he's starting his 16th season. Maybe he can keep the defensive pressure up for limited minutes, but maybe he's slowed enough that he can't.

The bigger issue is that everyone seems to believe that shooting 3's at a high rate is an absolute must. Seems to me that Ariza's 3P shooting has declined steadily for several years. I havent given a detailed look at his stats, or his stroke. Maybe the decline isn't as big as I imagine, or maybe it's because he's hasn't gotten enough open looks with the teams he's been on recently. But if he can't shoot the 3 well enough (whatever that is), it makes him an older version of a lot of other guys that are out there. And I think he'll still get pretty much the full MLE.

If someone sees him differently, I'd be happy to hear that I'm wrong. I'd love for the Spurs to sign the Trevor Ariza of even 4-5 years ago.

He didn't have a good season. Actually not even an average season. There is no reason to think he will be better next year. Pass.

Would not give him the money he's undoubtedly looking for... He's too old (34 and counting) and thus looking at an athletic decline. Would take for the vet min, but that's not going to happen. Also would need to make a roster spot, which is going to be pretty questionable.

I could see him going to the Lakers or Clippers. I can’t see SAS making his final list.

On the decline. But better than Pondexter and Cunningham

Ariza is one of those guys I wanted on the championship years. Now, not anymore and he’s old. Unless he’s willing to take a smaller contract and mentor role for the younger players.

Don’t count on it.

I wouldn't mind having him on the team, but would rather go with a younger option like Morris or Thad Young. If you sign Ariza it should be for 1 year only since he's old already, would make more sense to go younger and have someone at that position long term

He will sign with a team that can contend or one that will overpay...the Spurs are neither ..

Since the west is wide open. It would be unwise to say that the Spurs can’t compete next year.

However they will certainly need to use their mid level on a player who can add 3 point shooting to the starting unit. Sadly, Ariza seems to have lost his touch.

I’m also thinking Morris is the way to go.

DeRozan
Morris
Aldridge

With White, Gay, & Poeltl off the bench to round out the rotations. Whoever is hitting shots that day between Mills/Belinelli/Walker would get the remaining minutes in bigger games

Have no idea how he or any MLE player would get minutes on the team but Aminu would probably be higher than Ariza for me with Carroll being a cheaper option and more realistic.

Ariza, Carroll, Aminu and my choice Marcus Morris are more 4s than 3s these days with some flexibility to mark big SF. With our recent draft pick, Gay and bertans on the roster, unsure if using the MLE on a primary 4 is worth it. Rather a 3 who can play spot 4's than vice versa.
