They’re also warning of a potential quake within 15 minutes in Kern County. That’s Bakersfield.
Prayers that the Blessings and Judy and Les and Stan are OK.

Yeah. But now they’re warning for possibly another one in 15 minutes. 80% chance. I don’t know if we’ve really got a good handle on all this tbh.

It's all about infrastructure brah...if this was Haiti there'd already be 10,000 dead (before the subsequent cholera outbreak)

Congratulations to her. So I'm assuming you're at least a few years older than her, you're around 30 and she's around 25. She better appreciate you for that.

Not sure you'd want to move back unless the weather difference is an ultimate dealbreaker. You're going from a beautiful Csa mediterranean style warmish but temperate dry summer and mild winter to a place with hot and humid summers, stormy springs and falls and cold and often brutal winters. But then again the price factor and reduced taxes and the fact you'd probably be able to buy a house there much sooner might want to make you stay there. Or of course you could move to Texas.

we're the same age. she was working as a TA at UCLA for the last 2 years. waited until she got her green card to begin applying for medical schools

moving back has a lot of factors. weather is a huge one. its something you deal with 365 days per year. still dont get how people brush it off as "just weather." its a huge deal when it comes to standard of living.

we also have all of our family here. we're big on the extended family thing, so thats like 25-30 people that we usually see on a regular basis. not a small family where its just parents and siblings. will be a huge deal when it comes to the eventual child raising that we'll deal with when the time comes. then you add on all our lifelong friends

sure, cost of living in LA is pretty outrageous, especially compared to charlottesville (i cant afford to get a mortgage on a house here yet, but was able to make an all-cash purchase there :lol), but as a doctor/lawyer combo we should be able to manage that.

plus LA just has so much more to offer. charlottesville is nice, no doubt. its a small folksy place. people are kind. its quiet. are quality is better. less hectic. but there's so much more to do in LA. there are different parts of LA. charlottesville is just a town.

Nice.. I agree with you on the weather, but then again I'm not sure how fully owning a house vs. being a mortgage slave wouldn't ultimately trump that. But, your call, and yes a medium town in Virginia would be boring compared to LA, but you're not too terribly far from the likes of DC, Baltimore, even NY/Philly. In the East, everything is much closer together than in the West driving distance wise, you'd be surprised.

Then again, if you make it big as a lawyer and she brings in a steady $300k+ a year in surgery, you'll be living mortgage-free in a house in Malibu in no time! :lol

sure, we're "close" to philly/dc/baltimore. but thats not somewhere we can casually drive to on a friday evening :lol. its like living in los angeles and saying "well, we're close to san diego." that proximity doesnt come into play in our day to day life

we're also not very high maintenance at all. i still proudly drive my 08 civic and she was legitimately upset at me for "wasting money" on an engagement ring :lol

we dont need for me to be making high end attorney money, and her to be making surgeon money for us to life comfortably and happy. we'd be perfectly fine living in the san fernando valley instead of somewhere exotic like malibu or beverly hills, etc

Said plenty of times I'm fine here, just not a fan of class genocide, blatant thievery and corruption. Just seeing the plight everyone deals with and how much the state has fallen in prosperous times is nothing short of one of the most under reported things in modern times. that doesn't address your specific problem. iirc, you and your work are moving to another state....somewhere about 50 to 55 employees relocating? because of cost.

i don't know if that was based on personal income or operating cost.

Larger talent pool as well. SMBs arent sustainable here. We're fine with everything there.

It's a lot of everything with this state government. Not interested in going down the rabbit hole again. We're too rich a state, and constantly reminded of it, to have the issues we have that have been compounding in times of prosperity. Worse is the lack of action or any proposed plans of action to tackle anything the masses are hurting from or even plans for the tax revenues from the shameless gas prices.

Suffice it to say, this state government puts pain on people here more than any of the pieces of shit in Washington and, aside from SoCal, this state is great. Just like, aside from select places, this country is great. More people bitch about the Feds, the state guys here are worse. My take. I appreciate your concern.

It's one of the most beautiful states in the US weather-wise but $4/gallon for gas, even in a Prius or similar 50mpg hybrid, is ridiculous. Add to that 13.3% state income taxes, the 2nd highest property taxes in the US, above average sales taxes, well above-average crime, and the frightful threat of earthquakes and it's a non-starter imo as a place to permanently live and settle down.

The state was great up until 1991 when the cancer of hipsterism spread like the plague after the riots and it changed for the worst starting with the '92 election.

There are a lot of things I love about California- MediCal, insurance is really cheap, most cities have a great parks system, the varying landscapes, the weather is better, the outdoors is great and lots to do.

Chucho how can you say SF area is great? Aside from the weather, of course, but the people, the economy, the individual purchasing power? Awful. And that's just SF... OAK is a crime infested hellhole, even in SV the average commute to work is an hour and you're pretty much impoverished if you're not working full-time employment in tech.

Yep, as soon as I leave Texas I'll probably be outside a hell of a lot more, there's not much to miss about the weather in Texas (8 months of hot and humid and 4 months of too cold/wet, at least in Dallas). So health insurance is cheaper there? Is that only if you're below a certain income level, though? What about the group health insurance plans?

I always wondered one thing about California. How big of an earthquake, does it take, roughly for say, the dishes to start falling out of the cabinets and breaking, china falling loose from the cupboard and breaking, stuff falling off the ledge of the stair mantle or fireplace mantle?

I'm a huge materialistic guy and I value my belongings more than almost anyone else does, so I'd never want to move to a place where my precious things would be in serious jeopardy.

I did have this really striking Czech girl in one of my grad school classes. She was super cool, but at the time she was dating someone. Maybe with the occasional stripper, I don't come in contact with them in the LBC area of So.Cal. Perhaps if I spent more time in North Hollyood/Glendale area it would be different. I did have a girl I used to meet up at raves with who was Russian. She was cool, but that was when I was 19-20...She was more "Americanized" though.
