Lonnie Walker in street clothes.

Interesting, thanks :tu

Spurs play today and tomorrow so it makes sense for Walker to sit one of those two nights.

It'll be interesting to see if anyone else sits and if Quinndary Weatherspoon is healthy enough to play.

Good, no chance of Lonnie to get hurt in a meaningless game. Will hope to see a lot of Weatherspoon to see if he will be the 15th man.

Mr. Body
07-07-2019, 03:20 PM
Keldon has a great motor. He's an intangible guy, a relentless guy. Right now looks like a really nice pick-up at 29. Not sure he leaves Austin much this year due to the logjam, but he's a nice pick.

Samanic has a ton of work to do, maybe a couple years away. Needs to bulk up, get conditioning up, tighten his handles. I like skill-set, though.

Thats his main thing. Its unreal how fast he is with the ball. He just needs to gain strength, work on his shot, fine tune his passing...his passing can make your head scratch. That behind the back pass he does is so cringey as f

Samanic doesn't look great, but he's not too far from getting good. Literally, getting stronger, getting better conditioning, tightening his handles. I do doubt his rebounding, though. Hopefully bulking up will help there. But he's short on shots, loses the ball, all stuff because he's not strong enough and winded.

All 3 picks showed their potential today and that’s what you want from Summer League. It will be a while for Samanic to get into ideal conditioning but if he does a year or two from now it will be worth it. I don’t think we have to worry about the other two.

RC_Drunkford
07-07-2019, 04:25 PM
the fact that they didn't get outplayed by Bridges and their production was similar to his seems very promising. If they keep that up all 3 of them could dominate summer league next year which would then mean they are about to get a shot in the rotation. With Samanic and Johnson being 20 by then that's good progress

Kerr
07-07-2019, 04:25 PM
really liking Johnson and Weatherspoon, Ben Moore is also decent.

as for Samanic

+ handling
+ court vision
+ stroke / shooting
+ decent one on one defender
+ pretty quick feet and hands

-/+ sets ok screens
-/+ ok post-game

- dont know how to use his body/height
- cant rebound and box out
- zero help defender (usually looks on with his mouth open)
- suspect awareness near the defensive side of basket (related to blocking and rebounding)

- suspect awareness near the defensive side of basket (related to blocking and rebounding)

Really love Samanic at the top of the key, he can either drive to the basket or easily deliver a great pass to a cutting guard. He really knows his place around the court. His shot also looks like it’ll get much more accurate.

Keldon Johnson is just a Bull. His energy is contagious. Especially on defense. He really gets after it on the boards. He does the little things to help the team win.

Quinndary is just poised. His experience definitely stands out on the court. He can do a little bit of everything, pass, drive, defend, shoot. He can switch from 1-3 with ease. He has a similar game to Derrick White imo. His ball handling could still use a little bit more refining though.

Overall, I’m extremely pleased so far with this draft class. After a year in Austin, I’m sure they’ll be good enough to contribute next year if not earlier.

I think he’s the more athletic David Lee who can do a lot. Just needs time conditioning, get to proper body built. He will have a long career in the NBA with his multiple skills

Good QDairy comparison with White. He’s so poised and built. If we ever move Mills for an insurance Big, QDairy fills the role imo

Not a bad comparison, however unexciting it may be.... Wasnt David Lee an exceptional rebounder though ? I dont think Luka's peak as someone who will be decent at rebounding...

Good showing by our Rooks today.

Keldon Johnson with 19 pts/ 4 rbs / 1 ast /1 blk on 60% FG - Love this kid already. Great energy and hustle. Brings a competitive edge to the team. Doesn’t back down from anyone.

Luka Samanic with 14 pts/ 4 rbs/ 1 stl - Has a lot of tools but is raw right now. Looked winded for much of the game. Needs to get in better shape, get in a weight room, and continue to work on his game. He’s got talent though.. and still only 19.

Quindarry Weatherspoon with 19 pts/ 7 rbs/ 2 asts/ 2 stls - QW is a steal, plain and simple. NBA body already and just makes the right play almost all the time. He’s also a good rebounder for a PG. Love this pick at 49. Looking forward to watching play some more.

Whenever Lonnie doesnt play = team win + everyone plays better

Not gonna lie. I've never seen a great game from the team and Lonnie at the same time. This is why I hesitate ti say he will be in our rotation to start the season. Quindary looks like he can take Mills and Belli's spot already.

Samanic looked like he qill be the best player on that floor one day.

Personally I’d like for Q to take Beli’s Spot at this point, he’d be far more valuable. Just need to see if he can hit the three consistently.

A team in Europe can sign him regardless, no? NBA teams can tell his agent they have guaranteed money and to decline a two-way deal, right?

It's clear by watching them play that Luka has a higher ceiling though because of his skill and size imo. KJ looks more polished now than Luka though

I agree. Luka has higher upside. His play right now is due to a lack of conditioning and strength. But it is obvious that he does have the requisite athleticism and skill.

Johnson is not a bad pick for #29. He's got length and can shoot. At 19, there's a lot of upside. I project him to be better than Lonnie Walker.

I agree I think Luka can be really excelent on offense but not really good on defense. He will definitely need to be paired with a defensive Center who can rebound really well.

Keldon is a great 6th man he was actually my pick for 19 so super happy we got him at 29.

Weatherspoon was a great pick at 49 and perfect timing as he can replace Forbes and Mills next season after getting a year in G League.

I don't think people realize how sorry the competition in Summer League is compared to playing against NBA'ers. Players who go on to have good careers typically dominate in the Summer. They have a couple of great games that show they are head and shoulders above the competition and then get shut down. There's nothing to gain & nothing to prove. I recall Tim Duncan may have been the exception. He struggled a little in his early games.

The new draftees will have to develop mentally and physically before they sniff the floor in regular season NBA games. What we are seeing now is potential more than anything. Belinelli and Mills would tear up the Summer Leaguers and its not even a question.

you're right but if all 3 of our rookies have consistent games of scoring 15+ points that tells me that they can dominate the SL next year which means they can get into the rotation. With them being 19, 19 and 22 that's very promising

ESPN (anybody!) would sell more ads to a bigger gaming audience than showing NBA summer league scrimmages.

The fact that Luka went #19 and Johnson went #29 is curious because Johnson looks like the better player, tbh I like Weatherspoon more.

Right now, he is the better player, but if you take a guy who is 6'11", can handle the ball and shoot, and has a 38" vert, and he does put it all together, you've got a fucking monster, and a ceiling way above Keldon's, and I really like Keldon.

Leo that is what they say but not sure if he will ever reach it. If you are gonna do a potential high ceiling pick, I wish the Spurs would go for a prospect with elite athleticism, instead of a skill and size, seemingly soft euro.

You know a lot of 6'11" guys with a 38" vert? They don't exactly grow on trees...

Agreed. I'm hoping to see a little more from Lonnie Walker. His athleticism is fantastic but I'd like to see him use his smarts and court awareness more. Be a playmaker.

true but if he can be a scoring threat of the bench to start with I'm cool with that. He'll then have to improve on defense and court awareness with the bench group

I believe Duncan was told to play left-handed in his summer league games.

I was at the famed summer league game where Tim Duncan allegedly sucked. He had a double double in that game, if I remember correctly. He may have had 18 points or so. And while Ostertag did have a good game against Tim, probably the only good game he had against Tim, it was clear in that game that Tim was a stud. He did just fine in summer league after that. Tim sucking in his first summer league game is highly exaggerated. Ostertag was a good player, good enough to have an occasional good game against any number of elite players. He just couldn't do it consistently. And yes, Tim ate his lunch in the NBA.

cd98
07-08-2019, 03:56 PM
This was Tim Duncan struggling:

While matching up with Jermaine O’neal of the Portland Trailblazers, Duncan scored 12 points on 5/9 shooting and grabbed 7 rebounds, compared to O’neal’s 23 points on 8/13 shooting. The even bigger shock came when Greg Ostertag of the Utah Jazz made Duncan look like a school boy with little to no basketball experience. Oddly enough, Duncan scored only 14 points on 6/10 shooting, compared to Ostertag’s 21 points on 7/12 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds. No doubt, the Greg Ostertag pill was a tough one for Duncan to swallow. Duncan had come into summer league as the king of basketball, with all the potential in the world. He left with his head between his legs.

Those aren't awful numbers for summer league, especially because Ostertag had two years in the NBA when he went against rookie Tim Duncan in the summer league. And Jermaine had one full season. So the fact that talented players with some NBA experience had a good game against a rookie is not shocking. And Duncan's numbers, while paltry compared to what he did as Rookie of the Year in the NBA, were good numbers. He fouled out against Ostertag or he probably would have scored more in that game.
