MIAMI, Florida (31 de Octubre, 2005) – A continuación presentamos el texto de la conferencia telefónica con Emanuel Ginóbili, el jugador argentino de los San Antonio Spurs:

¿Cuándo vas a volver al seleccionado argentino? y ¿cómo va a ser tu futuro con la selección?
Creo que si no pasa nada durante esta temporada voy a jugar el mundial del próximo año, todavía quedan más de ocho meses y mucha competencia en la NBA y no se sabe como vaya a terminar físicamente. Pero el hecho de haber descansado este verano me dio la oportunidad de recargar las pilas y me dieron ganas de volver, así que si no pasa nada raro ahí estaré.

¿Cuáles son tus objetivos personales para esta temporada?
Realmente el único objetivo que tengo individualmente es mejorar en general, tratar de seguir creciendo de a poco, tratar de aprovechar que esta es mi cuarta temporada prácticamente con el mismo equipo, con el mismo técnico, con los mismos compañeros para tratar de hablar y comunicarme más y ayudar a mis compañeros un poco más. Pero en cuanto puntos, logros, premios y esas cosas, pues ninguno y cuando digo ninguno es en serio, no lo digo por aparentarlo, la verdad que ese tipo de cosas no me interesa.

Este año llega un uruguayo Esteban Batista, a la NBA, ¿qué piensas del interés que ha estado generando el básquetbol sur americano en la NBA?
Yo creo que ese interés es consecuencia de lo que está mejorando el básquetbol a nivel mundial, y también gracias a la NBA que se ha globalizado tanto y está en tantos países que los chicos quieren jugar cada vez mejor y más chicos juegan al básquetbol y por ende que haya más jugadores de otros países en la NBA. Así que Uruguay es un país más como hay tantos otros que van dando jugadores y nutriendo esta liga. Estoy muy contento obviamente porque es otro latino de un país vecino así que le deseo todo lo mejor y que tenga una buena temporada.

Se inicia la temporada contra un equipo difícil como Denver. ¿Qué pasará este año con los Spurs y ahora con la llegada de Fabricio Oberto?
Va a ser una temporada muy especial. Primero por como se armó el equipo, además de haber sido el mejor equipo el año pasado. Si se le suman estos tres jugadores nuevos, pasamos a ser candidatos automáticamente. Iniciamos con Denver, que es un equipo temido y que empezó a jugar muy bien con la llegada de George Karl, pero para este año con más preparación y más acostumbrados a su técnico van a jugar todavía mejor, muy físicos, muy rápidos y con mucho talento. También este día va a ser muy especial para todos por la entrega de los anillos y la ceremonia. No es un partido fácil de jugar, así que esperemos que nos vaya bien.

¿Qué tanto ha mejorado los Spurs con la llegada de Nick Van Exel, Michael Finley y Fabricio Oberto?
En cuanto a nombres, creo que hemos mejorado muchísimo, creo que tenemos el equipo con más profundidad de la NBA, por lejos. Si vos mirás los 12 jugadores nuestros, podrían jugar en cualquier equipo de la liga y hasta de titulares. Pero tener buena nómina no significa tener buen equipo y que juegues bien. Así que la idea es que todos juguemos con el mismo objetivo, que todos tiremos para el mismo lado y defendamos tan duro como el año pasado. Todo depende de cómo juguemos juntos, los nombre están, pero esto no hace un equipo.

¿Cómo se maneja el evitar el síndrome de campeón que a veces se da en los equipos teniendo en cuenta que siguen siendo uno de los grandes favoritos para el título?
Es difícil, porque uno internamente está satisfecho y contento con lo que ocurrió en la temporada anterior. Así que hay que tratar de olvidarse, de borrar lo que pasó en la temporada anterior de la cabeza, así que es difícil porque uno lo tiene siempre en la memoria y las emociones fueron tan lindas y es tan importante ganar el campeonato que uno lo quiere repetir. Esperamos que podamos tener la misma hambre, pero te digo que no es algo tan fácil, así que esperamos ser los suficientes maduros como para estar a la altura de las circunstancias.

¿Cómo has visto a Fabricio Oberto en la pretemporada, qué le falta para adaptarse al ritmo NBA?
Él está tratando de entender y aprender lo que quiere el técnico, cómo jugamos nosotros, cómo se juega con las reglas nuevas, entonces está en un proceso total de aprendizaje. Observa todo, trata de asimilar todos los movimientos y de ir acostumbrándose de a poco. De todas formas, sin tener estos conocimientos y ser tan nuevo, ha jugado muy bien. En los últimos tres partidos hizo un muy buen trabajo y creo que están todos muy contentos con él. Repito, todavía esta muy temprano, le falta todavía aprender y acostumbrarse y no se va a dar de un día a otro. No tengo dudas que cuando tome el ritmo y se acostumbre a jugar con nosotros va a ser muy importante para el equipo.

¿Cuál es el rival que le puede disputar el título a San Antonio para este año?
Creo que es muy difícil hablar de un sólo rival, hay muchos equipos que se han reforzado muy bien, así que te puedo hablar de cinco o seis equipos que pueden estar a la misma altura nuestra: en el este seria Indiana, Detroit y Miami, son tres equipos que están muy bien. En el oeste Houston, Phoenix y el mismo Denver. Entonces va a ser un campeonato muy duro y parejo como siempre.

¿Has hecho algo en la pretemporada que no tenga nada que ver con baloncesto pero que te ayude a prepararte psicológicamente para la temporada?
Lo que más me ayudado ha sido descansar. Venía de cuatro años consecutivos prácticamente sin descanso, de jugar todos los años con la selección y este año quise aprovechar para descansar. Estuve más inactivo de lo acostumbrado, tratando de estar con mi familia, con mis amigos en Bahía Blanca, cosa que no hacía hace mucho tiempo. Eso fue lo que más me recuperó mentalmente.

¿Piensas que puedes mantener el mismo gran nivel que tuviste durante la temporada anterior?
Ojalá que pudiera superarlo. Se que va ser muy difícil ya que tuve una gran temporada, jugué todos los playoffs. Pero nunca se sabe, por ahí juegas mejor o peor, lo más importante es que el equipo juegue igual, ese es el objetivo principal. Cuando el equipo juega bien y gana y puede repetir el campeonato, creo que lo individual por más de que sigas manteniendo el nivel o no, va ser igual porque la felicidad es enorme.

¿Ves algún problema con la distribución de la bola con los nuevos refuerzos que ha hecho el equipo?
Creo que depende exclusivamente de nosotros mismo, no depende ni de Popovich, ni de le gente, simplemente que nosotros seamos inteligentes, que sepamos entender que hay más jugadores, mucha gente que puede lanzar, así que por ahí vamos a tener menos tiros pero con mayor libertad. Mientras que no seamos egoístas y nadie empiece a mirar cuantos minutos juega este año, cuantos tiros hacía el año pasado y esas cosas, pues vamos a estar bien. Espero que respondamos a estas exigencias y que todos estemos concentrados con el mismo objetivo que es ganar el campeonato y no en los objetivos individuales.

Coincides tú con varios de los jugadores suramericanos que dicen que eres el espejo, el modelo a seguir, ¿qué piensas de esto?
Si lo piensan así me alegra mucho, pero yo no me veo así. Se que he sido uno de los pocos jugadores latinos que han salido campeones de la NBA y eso lo valoro mucho. Pero repito que nunca juego pensando en que represento todo un país o que represento toda Suramérica, yo me veo como un jugador más de la NBA. De donde es cada uno pasa a un segundo plano cuando tienes un objetivo como el de salir campeón.

¿Piensas que para esta temporada ya se han igualado las fuerzas entre las dos conferencias a diferencia de años anteriores donde había una supremacía de la conferencia oeste?
Si creo que sí, esto se ha dado de a poco sobre todo en los últimos tres años. Creo que todavía el oeste es más parejo y con más equipos de más nivel, pero hay equipos como dije anteriormente Indiana, Detroit y Miami, que están a la misma altura de los grandes equipos del oeste y porque no, hasta mejor.

Salió un reporte sobre una lesión en tu cuadriceps derecho. ¿Cómo ha evolucionado esto y como te sientes para tu debut frente a los Nuggets?
Estoy un poco adolorido, fue un golpe que recibí en un entrenamiento hace dos días. Ayer no entrené prácticamente y hoy hice un poco pero sin contacto. Me duele bastante, pero creo que voy a estar mañana. Hoy por hoy el chance es 50 y 50, yo voy a tratar de estar para este juego. Pero Popovich quiere estar seguro de que estoy bien para ponerme en cancha. Fue un golpe fuerte pero nada grave.

So Uruguay is a country more as there is so many other that go giving players and nourished this league. In the western one Houston, Phoenix and the same one Denver. Then is going to be an even and very hard championship as always.
