as far as haters posts, they're pretty wrong. I cant stand Piñera or his ministers, many of whom have a connection to the pinochet regime, but reality is that Piñera is not a far right dictator. On the contrary, he is one of the few right wing politicians who has (mostly) condemned pinochet and the regime. These protests are not about THIS government trying to abuse their powers, but rather the feeling of corruption, injustice, and impunity for the economic and political elite, which is mostly right wing but not entirely. A lot of sell out socialist governments are responsible for never fully reforming the pinochet constitution and further privatizing the country. What can be attributed to this government, was a series of terrible communication fails: the treasury sec. saying people shouldnt worry about the metro price hike because the price of flowers went down, the economy minister saying people could save .04USD if they commuted 2 hours early, the president justifying not paying taxes on his house for 30 years as an oversight, etc. They also promised the world during the campaign and fell very very short of those promises. But Piñera is not a dictator, hes an egomaniac, he wants to be loved by everyone, which means basically that EVERYONE hates him. and that also played a large part in this phenomenon, because no one has jumped to his defense, not even the right. The military and police dont like him either because he already left them hanging in their corruption cases. This isnt a coup and NOT AT ALL comparable to 73, when people were having their hands cut off, women having rats shoved in their vaginas, electroshock torture, etc. Surely, calling a curfew and putting soldiers on the street will lead to human rights violations, but like i said not at all comparable to 73. In fact, most of the dead so far are looters that got trapped inside supermarkets that were lit on fire, though there are a few victims of govt brutality/ gunfire.

In the past 10 years a lot of very serious corruption cases have come to light involving the elite, and the only punishment they got was mandatory ethics classes (if interested, Penta case, was about bypassing campaign finance laws and evading taxes, the involved basically made illegal campaign donations to influence politics and shorted the treasury millions of dollars in the process). The military and the police have also been exposed in the past 10 years, for mass corruption, incompetence, fabricating evidence, and even participating in robberies, drug deals, and illegal sales of weapons. So these protests, certainly are driven by a feeling of economic inequality, but also receives widespread support from middle and upper classes because the incompetence and corruption affects everybody.

The other big components are pensions, education and health care. The pension system was reformed during the dictatorship to be individual account managing forced contributions cut directly from your paycheck that go to one of (i think 8 now, not sure) Pension Fund Managers. These are private companies that operate with a govt license, charging each person a monthly fee for managing their fund. The idea was that it would force chileans to save, create a capital market and ensure that the pension system would be funded since your pension depended entirely on your contributions. They promised 70-80% of your salary would come through in your pension. In reality, people are retiring with 20-30% of their salary, while the private pension fund managers have been racking up obscene yearly profits in the billions. Right now the sytem pays an average pension of about 180 US; thats not even a third of the minimum wage here. Even well off, professional people are getting shafted on their pensions, its not a problem exclusive to the uneducated poor. And of course, corruption and colusion were also discovered inside the pension system. Also notable is that when this pension system was forced through by the military dictatorship, the military and police left themselves out of it and stayed in the old system; they receive much higher pensions for much fewer years of service. Also, senators and presidents get lifetime pensions regardless of how long they serve.
Education is the most privatized in the world and despite some attempts at reform in the last few years its still really expensive and terrible quality, even if you do have the money to pay for a private school/university; same goes for health care.

Now what hater does have a point about is the way things are reported. In ecuador, chile, as in many other countries, these policies are forced through physical or economic violence by outside actors (like the IMF), but when people peacefully protest they are either written off as irrelevant or discredited as violent looters. But in Hong Kong, where protestors have also looted shops, destroyed private property, attacked police with bombs and knives, they are freedom fighters. That is entirely because the west loves to condemn rival china. Here, the news is that chileans are spoiled for looting and pillaging despite having such a great economic situation. That is total bullshit and ill agree with hater on that.

this is pretty accurate. search function is disabled, i had written a post about chile a few months back that talked about the inequality and how it was fracturing society- now it finally cracked.

as far as haters posts, they're pretty wrong. I cant stand Piñera or his ministers, many of whom have a connection to the pinochet regime, but reality is that Piñera is not a far right dictator. On the contrary, he is one of the few right wing politicians who has (mostly) condemned pinochet and the regime. These protests are not about THIS government trying to abuse their powers, but rather the feeling of corruption, injustice, and impunity for the economic and political elite, which is mostly right wing but not entirely. A lot of sell out socialist governments are responsible for never fully reforming the pinochet constitution and further privatizing the country. What can be attributed to this government, was a series of terrible communication fails: the treasury sec. saying people shouldnt worry about the metro price hike because the price of flowers went down, the economy minister saying people could save .04USD if they commuted 2 hours early, the president justifying not paying taxes on his house for 30 years as an oversight, etc. They also promised the world during the campaign and fell very very short of those promises. But Piñera is not a dictator, hes an egomaniac, he wants to be loved by everyone, which means basically that EVERYONE hates him. and that also played a large part in this phenomenon, because no one has jumped to his defense, not even the right. The military and police dont like him either because he already left them hanging in their corruption cases. This isnt a coup and NOT AT ALL comparable to 73, when people were having their hands cut off, women having rats shoved in their vaginas, electroshock torture, etc. Surely, calling a curfew and putting soldiers on the street will lead to human rights violations, but like i said not at all comparable to 73. In fact, most of the dead so far are looters that got trapped inside supermarkets that were lit on fire, though there are a few victims of govt brutality/ gunfire.

In the past 10 years a lot of very serious corruption cases have come to light involving the elite, and the only punishment they got was mandatory ethics classes (if interested, Penta case, was about bypassing campaign finance laws and evading taxes, the involved basically made illegal campaign donations to influence politics and shorted the treasury millions of dollars in the process). The military and the police have also been exposed in the past 10 years, for mass corruption, incompetence, fabricating evidence, and even participating in robberies, drug deals, and illegal sales of weapons. So these protests, certainly are driven by a feeling of economic inequality, but also receives widespread support from middle and upper classes because the incompetence and corruption affects everybody.

The other big components are pensions, education and health care. The pension system was reformed during the dictatorship to be individual account managing forced contributions cut directly from your paycheck that go to one of (i think 8 now, not sure) Pension Fund Managers. These are private companies that operate with a govt license, charging each person a monthly fee for managing their fund. The idea was that it would force chileans to save, create a capital market and ensure that the pension system would be funded since your pension depended entirely on your contributions. They promised 70-80% of your salary would come through in your pension. In reality, people are retiring with 20-30% of their salary, while the private pension fund managers have been racking up obscene yearly profits in the billions. Right now the sytem pays an average pension of about 180 US; thats not even a third of the minimum wage here. Even well off, professional people are getting shafted on their pensions, its not a problem exclusive to the uneducated poor. And of course, corruption and colusion were also discovered inside the pension system. Also notable is that when this pension system was forced through by the military dictatorship, the military and police left themselves out of it and stayed in the old system; they receive much higher pensions for much fewer years of service. Also, senators and presidents get lifetime pensions regardless of how long they serve.
Education is the most privatized in the world and despite some attempts at reform in the last few years its still really expensive and terrible quality, even if you do have the money to pay for a private school/university; same goes for health care.

Now what hater does have a point about is the way things are reported. In ecuador, chile, as in many other countries, these policies are forced through physical or economic violence by outside actors (like the IMF), but when people peacefully protest they are either written off as irrelevant or discredited as violent looters. But in Hong Kong, where protestors have also looted shops, destroyed private property, attacked police with bombs and knives, they are freedom fighters. That is entirely because the west loves to condemn rival china. Here, the news is that chileans are spoiled for looting and pillaging despite having such a great economic situation. That is total bullshit and ill agree with hater on that.
