but those teams were clearly more dependent on shaq than kobe. coaches clearly focused more of their defensive gameplans on finding ways to contain him as best as possible. kobe was able to receive a lot more one-on-one attention, which is what his game thrived on most.

they needed each other to win, no question. and kobe had some moments of absolute greatness where he saved the team. but truth is, take kobe off those teams and they still easily make the playoffs with shaq, maybe even a 2nd round visit. take shaq off those teams, and they struggle to even make the playoffs. shaq was the foundation. and as mentioned, he didn't have to deal with many elite wings in the west. most of the best wings and guards were out east at that time. shaq was the one having to deal with most of the best big men in the league

tbh looking back, those rosters were honestly not all that great, almost identical to the lakers supporting cast right now... a cast of decent players, but they are/were basically 1 dimensional or capable but not proficient shooters.
