They are a small market, that is no secret.
Look at their ratings when they are in the Finals, they are low.
Now, if Miami and SA get to Finals, then you will see some numbers that will make Stern jump for joy.
Didn't Brent kiss someone on the river parade too??? I seem to think that he did. Is he gay? :)

Anthony would have lit up Jesus himself last night. He has turned into a fantastic player over the Summer. Look for him to be al All Star this year and stay there forever.

I was at the game, and one of my favorite parts of the night was hearing 18,000 fans boo Stern in unison. It was great! You could just see the pain in the man's eyes when he had to give the rings to people other than Kobe or Shaq.

TNT re-played the kiss in slo mo. Stern actually took it very well and laughed immediately.
I'm surprised the generally polite Spurs crowd booed Stern, esp in last night's festive circumstances. What's their beef with Stern? Do they even know or is booing him now just reflexive amusement?

What's their beef with Stern?
He has made a hobby (or maybe a profession) of dissing San Antonio and the Spurs at every opportunity, both subtly and with big bold strokes. If he can't belittle or insult the city of San Antonio, the Spurs fans, or the Spurs themselves, Stern generally keeps his mouth shut. I'm sure it really torqued his jaws to have to be here last night for the ring ceremony. I'm sure he'd rather have been somewhere else.

You must not have watched too carefully. Carmelo had 7 in the first 6 minutes or so, mostly because he was posting up the smaller Bowen. Against big, physical wings, Bowen's defensive weakness is that he can be posted up and needs help in those situations. Denver played into that early, with some success.
I would think that Ray Allen wouldn't have fared any better and might have done much, much worse, given his aversion to physical play.
Pop made the switch to Finley, to bring a bigger body against Carmelo, who only had 3 more points in the rest of the first half. His 8 in the 4th Quarter were "against" Finley, who was trying to force Carmelo baseline with help coming from the weakside. Melo got a dunk on one play because Finley did what he was supposed to, but Mohammed was late rotating to give the help. Melo also had a couple of scorer's plays where he just made tough shots. But for the most part, I thought the Spurs defensive effort on Anthony was quite good. And, again, I don't think it would have been helped by having Ray Allen on the floor, or by putting Manu on Anthony.

He actually had 7 in the first 3 1/2 minutes, but 2 of them were fast break points off Manu's second turnover. So two baskets were from posting up Bowen.
But you are right about the rest... the bulk of Melo's points came "against" Finley in the second half.

Good post, FWD. Fin needs to work on his timing on doubles. He went high too quickly a couple of times before the help was present, leaving Melo with a clear path toward the basket. Better communication should come with time.

So was I. I wanted to hush the crowd when they were booing Stern. It's stupid. And I'm sure 90% of the booers don't even know why they were booing.

I wish people would have just been silent when Stern was up there. It was not a night for boo's.

Kori, do you know why people boo Stern?
They also bood him when the Spurs beat the Pistons and he presented the trophy Championship trophy. I also felt like telling everyone to behave and leave the poor man alone.

I'm guessing that some people boo him because they think Stern hates the small market, loves the Lakers, blah blah.. but it's stupid. Stern has done amazing things for the game of basketball and definitely a ring ceremony isn't a time to boo.

Stern is San Antonio's best friend. The Spurs are going to be pimped at every opportunity worldwide by the league.
There's kind of two basic models for pro sports. One is near absolute parity, where any team can come together and win a title in a given year. The other is a tale of a few dominant teams doing battle every year, with perhaps one being a 'dynasty'. The NBA has tended to follow the latter model. If you are a Spurs fan who is in need of reassurance that your team will be popular, then take heart in knowing that the league is firmly concerned with promoting the Spurs worldwide. The league is trying to get out in front of the bandwagon and make the Spurs' dominance pay off for it.

I recall an interview with Stern in which he laid out how the league looks at competitiveness from a marketing perspective. He said something to the effect that the 'king of the mountain' approach worked best, where there was one dominant team and every season the 'story' was about who could knock them off.

What's remarkable about the NBA is that in the modern day and age, a small-market team with the right people can repeat what the Green Bay Packers under Vince Lombardi accomplished in the 1960's, or what the Edmonton Oilers did in the 1980's.
In no other pro sport is that possible.
