That would be sad; cos while I like the former more, diversity of joints is good.

The fucking shakes alone make In N Out wipe the floor with Whataburger. Though there is one location on Sunset that would make the shakes so thick you'd have to let them melt ten minutes before you could get them through a straw.
Both kinda suck tbh. I'll take Habit Burger or White Castle over both In-N-Out and Whataburger.

Overcharging would slow the factory lines. Whataburger offers a more diverse range of products at lower volumes and thusly needs higher prices.

On that scale the shakes are 20 miles worse. Also all four Whataburgers I occasionally eat at are super inconsistent. Seems like if I show up at the lunch rush the burgers will sometimes be pretty moist and flavorful but any other time they're usually overcooked and dry, whereas at In N Out the burger is always cooked to be pretty moist when I go there. Whataburger may have a way bigger menu, but all I want is burger + fries + shake or a Coke when I go to either anyways.

I go to what a burger at late hours usually if I eat fast food, 2pm or thereabouts. I don’t visit In and Out anymore because I really don’t like them as much. It’s obviously very subjective but I usually go to one WB in SA, and one when I’m fishing down at the coast. But neither a whole lot.
I usually destroy the salad bar at Jason’s Deli when I’m really hungry after excessive biking, running or swimming. I would kill myself at a burger joint at these times so I don’t touch it.

What is your first choice? BK, McDs, Wendys, JITB? For cheap I personally like Steak - N- Shake.
For fast food? Probably Freddy's. I don't live near a SnS, but I assume it's comparable. But let's be honest, fast food fills a void, that's all. I'd rather spend a few more dollars and eat elsewhere.

For quality, I'd rather eat at home. Fast food is strictly for the sake of convenience. It's worth it because it doesn't break the bank, and it's well, fast. But having worked back of the house in high school days for both fast food and full restaurant service, I pretty much avoid sit-down restaurants unless I'm with a chick. Restaurants are disgusting and messy. I recall working with spics who would leave raw chicken bits on the "clean" dishes or mixing bowl rack... that sort of thing was the norm.

They're only bad at peak times. And they are arguably that good when considering the alternatives in that price range. Still, it seems like they're more popular relative to the competition than a couple decades ago.

I only go to In-N-Out right before closing time after 12:30 am. Pull right in, only person in line usually. Plus they’ll drop extra fries on you. Always ask for 3 spreads for the fries, and yellow hot peppers, because I like free hot peppers.

Yeah it's a good burger but at double the price of Inn N Out, meh no thanks. There is also a local place called Chester's where it's like $15 for a bacon cheeseburger, fries, and coke that's pretty good (about on par with Five Guys) but if I'm paying that much I might as well just drop ten bucks more and go get a steak.

Chester's is fucking great if you get your food right out. Try their Green Chili Cheeseburger. Tell them to heat up the green chili. Probably the best mid-level burger in SA.
In and Out still spanks the shit out of Whataburger. The service, the price, the freshness...the lack of rats falling into fryers and sub-standard health inspections- literally everything.

This. Growing up in TX, I have had more shitty experiences with Whataburger than I could remember. In n Out's staff and general cleanliness are amazing. Whatburger has them on hours, but after 2 the line inside and out just isn't worth the wait, or wondering what is actually in your bag.

exactly. its just a matter of preference. some people like all the artificial flavorings that go into fries at most places. in n out is straight up potatoes (you can see them making it fresh in the kitchen if you peek past the counter) in sunflower seed oil + salt. nothing else.

This is how I know you haven’t really been there often. In-N-Out Burger famous spread is not 1000 island dressing. There’s no hint of ketchup in their dressing. Whataburger is soggy AF (especially if you make the mistake to get ketchup on the burger instead of on the side like a grown-up) and more than twice as expensive.
In-N-Out and Steak-N-Shake are both solid value for the price (Freddy's is mediocre and overpriced), but Steak-N-Shake's customer service is quite shoddy. They're always way understaffed, take a half hour to serve a simple hamburger and fries combo, and one time they gave my girlfriend fried chicken that was raw on the inside.

In N Out is a much better burger, but their fries are godawful, borderline inedible. You have to get them well done to make them just mediocre.
Whataburger’s burgers are overrated, but the A1 burger and the patty melt are fantastic. The fries are solid but not amazing, however the spicy ketchup is a gamechanger tbh.
The fact that a Whataburger drive thru is slow as molasses, and you’ll probably be sitting there for 20 minutes or more, is a huge minus. At least in Texas, In-N-Out drive thrus are way faster.

I think this has to do with the variety that WB offers. If everyone ordered burgers and fries, I'm sure it would go much quicker. Was thinking of all the In N' Outs I been too. Can't think of one that has double lanes. But the ones in SoCal are the older ones where it all started. Though Vegas too. Have seen them at Chick Fil A and Raising Canes.
I may have been wrong about more than 2 lanes. But here's the one I went to...in Pasadena with two lanes.

Never been to the one in Pasadena; but that is what a lot of the old LA County ones look like. Smaller in cramped spaces.
I would think they'd move to a bigger store/lot; but some of them they seem to preserve for historical purposes.

I guess in the era of covid and drive thru being ubiquitous and nobody wanting to dine in anymore for myriad reasons, the drive-thru only business model is much more successful now so they don't need to have a bigger store or lot. Especially in California when property tax by sqft on commercial zoned lots are expensive as fuck.

Taco Cabana -- back in the 80s and 90s when it was good -- had double lines with a ridiculous overhead bag transport like a bank. Don't know if any of them still exist.
Waiting in a car line for "fast" food is somewhere between annoying and infuriating, so the OP restaurants are pretty much out of the equation most of the time. These days McDonald's is giving away so much food through its app it doesn't make sense to go anywhere else. There I always use the curbside during available hours and avoid the 20 cars in the double line. I have no idea why more people don't use it.

They're not drive thru only (if they're like the other In N' Outs I've been to like that). Chances are you can go through that side door and order or there's a walk-up order window unshown. There may or may not be some indoor seats; and if not, there is likely some outdoor seats; or both. But the seating is much more limited than other places. Similar situation for the Tommy's in LA County compared to other places. Don't know if you have Tommy's out East or not.
