This thread sums the hubris Texas fans have about their program. And there’s nothing Texas could offer Dabo to leave except more presssure and criticism from the fans, alumni, and boosters. Good coaches go to Texas to die.

I can think of a 100 million reasons Dabo would leave Clemson for Texas. Only Texas is rich enough to offer him a 10 million dollar contract and pay his assistants like an NFL franchise. When you are a winning coach at Texas and you want something, you pick up a phone call one of our many billionaire alumni and tell them what you want, and you get it. That is the difference between Texas and every other school.

This will never happen. Texas has never money whipped any coach. Also, why the fuck would Dabo want to leave a football powerhouse to come to Texas?

Never say never, he will leave because of the payday.
Kermit

No he won’t. And neither will any other coach of a competent program, because they can all match. Clemson can and will match and Texas isn’t paying a coach $20 million a year.
Vito Corleone
01-16-2020, 12:43 PM
Do you know how many programs actually are making money? Clemson isn't one of them, they can't match what Texas can offer. In my estimate, Texas could probably go 12 million a year without blinking an eye, and then they can probably go another 8 million for his assistants. So all in, yes, Texas can offer 20 million to a coach like Dabo Sweeney if he is willing to come. There is nothing that Clemson can offer that can beat what Texas can offer.

See, this delusion that we can throw money at any problem is exactly why we’re laughed at. Texas has to answer to many politicians, people in power, and the court of public interest. There is no way that they will ever spend that ungodly amount of money on a football coach. Clemson, whether or not their accounting shows a profit, will undoubtedly match anything thrown at Dabo. AND WHY THE FUCK WOULD DABO WANT TO COME TO A PROGRAM THAT IS A FLAMING BAG OF DOGSHIT WHEN HE HAS BUILT ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL HISTORY FROM NOTHING?

Power, Prestige, Challenge, Money, Impact, there are many reasons to take on the challenge of coming to Austin. If it happens, it won't be with money from the athletic department, it will be with money from the alumni. Our alumni are getting desperate to get a winner. Just like after we fired Fred Akers we followed up with two stinkers for coaches, if we fire Herman we are going to get serious about our next hire and getting another flavor of the month coach isn't going to cut it. Texas will go after a proven winner on the P5 level.
Clemson wanting to match the money Texas can throw at him and having the ability to do so are two very different things. Clemson is not a big University, it doesn't have near the resources that Texas has. It doesn't have the alumni base that Texas has. I lived in Clemson SC, I know it's a great school with very smart people running it, but they aren't Bama, or LSU, I would compare the University to Tulane more than a typical southern school. They would have a much harder time justifying the contract like that then Texas would.

Clemson is #25 on that list, but to be fair, at least now they are showing a profit, it wasn't too long ago they were in the red and relied on donors and the University to stay in the black. Also maybe I should remind you what Texas profits would look like if they had won 2 of the last 4 championships and played in 3 of the last 4.

But it's built on all that money tho.
I seem to remember a lot of people on various horn sites expressing their feelings that a certain big money donor should STFU about the choices Texas made in head coaches. And to think, Red was right about Charlie Strong. It was the BMDs that set us up to get Saban and Mack killed it, then he shit on his last recruiting class. Mack Brown was a POS for screwing over this program and leaving it worse than he found it. Then Texas screws themselves by hiring the worst AD in the history of college sports. who in turn makes a coaching hire for all the wrong reasons. Everything ended badly.
None of that changes one simple fact, Texas has the BMDs to make money no object when it comes to getting in a proven winner. Lets face it, if Dabo comes to Texas it will be because Texas money whipped the shit out of him, just like they tried to do with Saban. If he doesn't it's because of something other than money, because the advantages Texas has over Clemson are ridiculous. I've been to both Universities, Clemson is a beautiful University with lots of rolling hills, but much like B/CS there isn't much there outside of the University.
The point I was trying to make is, if you fire Tom Herman, you don't go out and hire another Tom Herman, this isn't a place where you learn on the job like he has had to, you hire a proven winner. You go to the best with a package that shows him we are committed to him coming to Austin and turning it into a juggernaut. If Dabo says no, it won't be because Clemson can offer him more, it will be because of some non-football related reason. Then you move onto the next candidate. Don't just assume that because he is successful at Clemson he would never leave, you make him tell you no.

That is revisionist history. We had a committee of BMDs they wanted Mack, Deloss wanted Barnett, BMDs met with Mack and and told Deloss to meet with him, he did and offered him the job. The only person that wanted Barnett was Deloss. What makes you think we didn't money whip Mack. His original contract was the average of the two highest paid coaches at the time. 5 million back in 97 was a huge contract for a coach.

Lol, they weren’t paying him $5 million a season in 1998! A simple internet search would show that they paid him $750,000 in 1998. It went up to a $1 million the next season. They didn’t pay him $5 million until 2009 when shit hit the fan and everyone bitched about a coach getting paid that much during cutbacks. Also, Tom Hicks really wanted Mack Brown. I wouldn’t say all the donors at the time were completely enamored with him. He definitely won them over though.

Did we try? All we did was interview him, did you ever think we might not wanted him? There was not a single article that we offered him a contract and he turned it down, and even if there was, more than likely it had more to do with other demands he asked for that Texas was unwilling to give him.
