SpursTalk hero CJ McCollum is quietly one of the worst starters in the NBA. Just killed them defensively vs. the Pelicans.
Until NO shows any type of consistency, looks like the Griz has the 8 seed on lockdown. Spurs should be back next year if Pop steps down.

ESPN.com still has the Spurs at 10.
First tiebreaker is always head to head. The Spurs have only played the Pels once, and they won that one. That should put them at 10.

I had to start Ctrl/Paste from The Athletic standings page because ESPN page has been doing this lately. It automatically highlights all the teams and doesn't paste correctly anymore.

You're the last person I would ever gripe about. You keep this place well-informed, and you always have some fresh pictures and/or videos. I always hate it when people doing all the work get hammered for every inconsequential thing. Absolutely no disrespect intended, I promise.
A lot of sites seem to show teams with identical records in arbitrary order until it comes to playoff time. I guess because the tiebreakers can be too convoluted to automate? It doesn't change a thing about the fact that the Spurs are really, really unlikely to get to that 8 seed now.

Grizz almost a 30 win team. It's tight with Blazers, Spurs, Kings, Suns, Pelicans. Spurs picked a bad season to suck with the 8th spot being so close. Spurs 4 1/2 games out.
Rest of this season is going to be a grind for that 8th seed, if we get 10 games out it's over, no playoffs.

I thought the same.
I thougth the Grizzlies being youngins would cool off at some point, but frankly they are a deep team and are actually improving once they get Winslow, plus Dieng is a good addition to them.
Spurs will need a longish winning streak as you say and that is just unlikely. It's not over yet, but it's very uphill.

The Grizzlies have the toughest remaining schedule in the NBA.
The Pelicans have the easiest schedule remiaining, the Trail Blazers have the 6th easiest schedule, and the Spurs have the 10th easiest schedule.

That 23 consecutive winning seasons pro sports record would have been nice but being tied at 22 consecutive winning seasons for pro sports isn't so bad either. No team in the NBA will match that for quite awhile if ever, it's something to be proud of. Yes making the playoffs for the Spurs will be an uphill battle the rest of the season but it's still possible.

It’s a little wishful thinking to think about catching the Grizzlies at this point. Spurs blowing away too many winnable games earlier in the season has really caught up to them now.

The Spurs would need to win 10 games in a row to be where Memphis is which is 2 games above 500. Face it. The season is lost. So, the next question is what will they do with this dysfunctional team and mentally challenged coach?

Five teams vying for the eighth seed. Spurs might be the only one, of the five, who could lose their top scorer and not be sunk. Sorry folks, but I can’t see Pop tanking in any world. Seeing some of the players quit on the team early would disappoint me a ton more than losing in the first round. All that said, I think the team will have to win 75% of their remaining games. Tall task indeed!
spurs50_

Absolutely nothing. They’ll bring the same team back minus Poetl (they won’t want to match the salary other teams will offer). I’m thinking they extend ddr too

There is no injury that will give us a path to a ring... It 9nly makes sense for young players to get playoff experience if they have a foundation to build upon (like the bucks several years back, or the Hawks right now)... We currently have no sense of direction and our "stars" are old and selfish and don't mesh well with the rest of the team or the modern nba

It's not about ring or bust. It should never be about that. And the team has a young core that needs to grow. You want to see them on the court and off handle a playoff series. You want to see the rookies (who never play), be around playoff preperation. Also the Spurs have previously gotten spanked in playoff rounds. You learn and grow.

Dejounte and Pop's relationship is miles better than Deron Williams and Jerry Sloan. I just don't want it to even approach what happened there. Slippery slope and all that. However Pop can't be happy about Dejounte's public comments, even though in this day and age stuff like that is inevitable (and Dejounte was as diplomatic as he could be, given that he mentioned it at all).

So we got 2 games vs the Kings and 3 games vs New Orleans and 1 vs the grizzles.
Memphis has the 2nd toughest remaining schedule and are expected to drop
The suns have the 9th hardest remaining schedule and are too far behind i think to catch up.
Portland is a threat we have little control over since we don't face them again and they have a slightly easier remaining schedule than the Spurs at 25th hardest. Portland owns the tie breaker due to winning the regular season series.
New Orleans we play 3 times so beating them is very important down the stretch.
The spurs have the 22nd hardest remaining schedule. Given the layout it seems a playoff appearance is mostly in the Spurs hands if they can beat the teams they are fighting for a playoff spot.

Sure doesn't look promising for a playoff push for the 8th seed. Oh well can't be perfect every NBA season and make the playoffs. Duncan, Parker, Manu, Drob, Kawhi aren't on the hardwood no more playing for Spurs so it's less humiliating they will finally miss playoffs.
Spurs can look at it like we will take the draft pick and try and get better or rebuild. Not sure what direction the franchise will go in if they finally miss the playoffs for the first time in 22 seasons. They can either try to improve this team or rebuild.

For sure. Keep the L’s coming. Ive been on team no playoffs for a while now; the writing was on the wall for a long time even if it’s hard to come to that conclusion for many.
But this team has been the same all year; is what it is and any lottery pick is better than making the playoffs with this team.

Eh, honestly with this shitty draft, a lottery #14 pick is pretty much the same as a non-lottery 18th pick.

If Pop keeps coaching, LMA stays out, and Forbes stays in I think they could get under Chicago. Spurs already lost to Chicago once and can still pick up the tiebreaker.

Church. Let's be honest if Spurs made it to 8th a sweep was coming... Rather have a pick then a sweep. I know Holt(?) family could use the infusion of playoff revenue but longterm a lottery asset means more big picture wise.
Plus yall lost to the Cavs when you needed a win... That should wake everyone the fuck up.

In reality probably true. But on paper there is a difference regarding asset attractiveness. If the Spurs want to make moves, just having that actual lottery pick is a big deal (even in a weak draft GM’s get very excited about players).
Also, Spurs looking closer to pick 9-12 than 14.

Yessir. I mean, there were plenty of losses before this that should have woken people up. The fact that the Spurs “best” stretch of games was still barely .500 ball should have been the wake up call.
LA would absolutely embarrass SA and there is no reason this team should be a playoff team. They are flat out poorly put together and bad. Just the potential for a top 4 pick is a big deal, even if we end up with 10-14.

Anyone of us watching the games can say the Spurs have no chances of going to the playoffs. It started being clear some time ago, now is evident. There isn’t enough basketball nor competitive ability in this roster. Add the injuries and the team recognizing the harsh reality lately. Coaching didn’t help and it’s part of the problem as well.
The team was incapable and now it has quit.

I just posted it in another thread, but if the Spurs can overtake Phoenix for the 10th worst record, it would carry a 13.9% chance of a Top 4 pick. I'd take a Top 4 pick in a heartbeat.
I guess a lot of people who have been talking about that 8th seed for the last few weeks don't consider games in common. When you're in a race with one team, you can hope to get some help from that team losing. But when you're in a race with 4-5 teams that is a lot harder.
Memphis still has two games with the Pels. If Memphis drops both, the Spurs get closer to them - but they probably lose ground to New Orleans. The best you can hope for is a split, but that means that both teams will be .500 for those games. The Spurs were never going to be able to play .600 ball and gain enough ground to take 8th. And there was no way they were going to play .700 or .750 ball to close. The weren't mathematically eliminated, but the math said that they have been functionally out of it for a while now.

Really hoping for 10 or better. Would be great all things considered.
Spurs aren’t playing well and nothing they do vs what they say makes you take them serious regarding making the playoffs. To stand pat at the deadline after seeing what you saw screams not being serious.
And if the reason you stood pat was that no one wanted your guys? That should also tell you something.

Spurs aren’t playing well and nothing they do vs what they say makes you take them serious regarding making the playoffs. To stand pat at the deadline after seeing what you saw screams not being serious.
And if the reason you stood pat was that no one wanted your guys? That should also tell you something.
10 is doable. Washington has a brutal schedule remaining, and not a lot of interaction with the other lottery teams. Chicago is just about as bad, but they do have games against the Spurs and Phoenix. Still, it's going to be hard for the Spurs to move higher than 10. Pop would have to go full tank mode - maybe hold Aldridge and Poeltl out for the rest of the season - and give Forbes/Beli more minutes. The worst possible thing would be to push and win just enough games to get to the 14th worst record. Stuck in the middle. And Pop seems hell bent on doing exactly that.
You know I've said for a long time that the Spurs are in cap hell, and before they get out of cap hell they will have a bunch of young contracts that they have to renew, which won't leave them with the kind of cap space they really need to re-tool through free agency. So if they're going to be relying on new/young guys (and they obviously are), they should have had them on the floor to get the experience. I can understand fans holding out false hope for their team. But professionals should have been able to put this together before now. That's assuming they have put it together now.
I've also been saying that the longer they put off making hard choices, the harder and longer the recover would be. They really needed to commit to change before the deadline. Because the only thing worse than change is going to be staying the same.

The Grizzlies are expecting forward Jaren Jackson Jr. to return from an injured left knee within the next week along with Justise Winslow also making his debut with Memphis in that same time span.

Spurs been doing that for ages. First it was the Parker contract, then when that was over they thought it was smart to give all that money to Pau Gasol and 50 Mills. Then when Pau was in his last year they gave Carroll 15 million and Gay another 15 per year. When those are paid off they will come up with other ways to throw the money away. This entire FO is garbage
