Being reported by multiple outlets. Tragic if true.
There was a helicopter crash, 5 aboard killed. TMZ is reporting Kobe on the helicopter. Everyone is trying to confirm. Wife not on board. Details still coming out. ABC news desk 7 in California is reporting now the same as TMZ. First responders still out on sight.

Sad news. Really hope his daughters weren't in that helicopter. This is neither here nor there but as much as I hated him as a player, he always had respect for the Spurs. He was one of the first guys outside San Antonio who propped up Manu as a great player too. And now he leaves this life as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. RIP.

I can't believe it. Kobe remains an absolute legend! I think he was a much better person than many people gave him credit for. This is brutal, just devastating! A huge loss for culture, the Southern California community, and the sports community. He influenced so many people, up and coming players and those who were his fans. He carried the Lakers after Shaq. One of the few modern players who stayed with the same time his entire career. He played for his country. He played both sides of the ball. He could do everything, post up, get to the rim and shoot the 3. He was very charismatic and a gifted speaker. We all have our mistakes, but Kobe was a good person. I can't believe he's gone.

Off the court stuff not withstanding, I hated Kobe So much growing up because He was so damn good and the rivalry with spurs meant so much to me. It ruined literally weeks of my life when we would lose to them in the playoffs. Once the dust settled and the years passed i realized how important he was and what a treat is was to see him play. I respect everything about his game and all he gave to it. His daughter being with him makes this even more devastating. Rip kobe :(

Nobody is worshipping the man, but as a basketball fan the mark and presence he left everywhere in the NBA and in the basketball world in general is second to none. And many of his grew up watching the Spurs go at it with that Lakers team. We can relate with to it in a way and it’s a shattering reminder of how temporary our time on earth is. Just because you think differently than someone else doesn’t mean you should judge how people cope with a death of someone they might not have known personally but still understand how it hits close to home

Kobe was a fucking assassin on the court. He brought it every game. I hated his ball hogging, Spurs murdering ass. However, I respected the fact that he never whined, bitched, or moaned anytime defenders covered him like a blanket or were a little too physical.....most of the guards in his era lived in complete bitch mode.
But even more tragic, it wasn't just Kobe that died, it was 4 others as well, including his daughter. So now Vanessa and her others have to bury a husband/father and a sibling....brutal. The same goes for that other family as well.

MSNBC’s Sunday anchor Alison Morris made easily the worst reporting gaffe in 2020. While interviewing sports journalists about the tragic and untimely death of Kobe Bryant, Morris somehow mixed up the “Los Angeles Lakers” with the “Los Angeles N*ggers.”
It’s almost too hard to believe, but it happened.
MSNBC appears to have a 15 second delay, as the word didn’t air in some markets (https://twitter.com/tomselliott/status/1221541943483781120?s=20). Alison Morris has not addressed the slip-up since it occurred. Her Twitter feed (https://twitter.com/alisonmorrisnow?lang=en) has also not made reference to the embarrassing accident. Some online have suggested (https://twitter.com/JohnBladeClark/status/1221545205574205440?s=20) she simply said “Nakers” instead of “Lakers,” but our editors hear a hard “g,” not a “k” sound.

Kobe was supposed to be one of the guys that aged gracefully into his 80s or 90s, and shot the shit on the air during basketball games throughout his life.
He took care of himself. Didn't gain a bunch of weight after retiring. This is so wrong.

I'm just stunned to hear this news; it's tragic to see a great man die so young. And to lose a daughter too who hadn't hit the prime of her life yet. I can't imagine what it's like for Vanessa to have to bury a husband and a daughter. I feel fortunate to have gotten to see Kobe play in-person three times, even though one of them was a really bitter playoff loss where he kicked the Spurs ass. RIP to a legend and condolences to the entire Southland. Having lived in Los Angeles for a lot of Kobe's career I know just how much he has always meant to the area. Damn I was really looking forward to seeing him and Tim go into the Hall of Fame together too. Just leaves me with a rotten feeling in my stomach hearing this horrific news.

For me his death has been surreal. I really despised him when he first came into the league. His arrogance really got to me along with his Jordan impersonations. Really hated him during the Spurs-Lakers rivalry. The last several years as time went on my dislike for him mellowed out. Getting older will do that for you and I just appreciated the rivalry that he had with the Spurs. The '03 title was my favorite title out of the 5 mainly because the Spurs ended the Lakers 3 peat along with making Kobe cry. Every now and then I will watch the clip of him crying and chuckle or troll my laker friends with it. Now with him being gone watching that clip doesn't mean anything to me anymore. It's no longer fun to watch. One thing Kobe did teach me is the most satisfying victories in life are the hardest victories which is why beating the Lakers '03 meant so much for me.

Hated that he played for the Lakers and kicked our ass so much, because if he had been in any other uniform he would've been one of the non-Spurs that I actively rooted for. After a shaky start in terms of maturity, he ended up being a pretty stand-up good guy and seemingly a good father. He probably had a lot more to give the game.

all i wonder about is why the chopper went down / who was piloting.
Kobe used a chopper to play a trick on Pelinka, the LA Times reported in 2017.
Bryant had the pilot do military maneuvers on the chopper with Pelinka on board, and even turn the engine off in midair.
“My life was flashing before my eyes,” Pelinka told the newspaper. “I almost had a heart attack. Kobe’s just sitting there calm and collected.”
The 41-year-old hoops great died in a chopper crash in California Sunday. It is unknown if he was flying the craft or if the helicopter was charged or privately owned.

I didn't think I would but I teared up a little when both teams were letting the shot clock run out. The gesture itself was kind of corny but the sadness in the building was palpable. Seeing Timmy, Becks, and Sean wiping away tears got me.
Probably wasnt crying for Kobe the person as much as I was about the fact that a big part of my childhood was gone like that. Really opens your eyes to how fragile life is.

Language is so limiting. He made so many of the Spurs championships better, more entertaining because beating his Lakers meant something. In the same breath, losing to his Lakers hurt that much more. One of the true greats that made us all feel something by playing the game of basketball. Unbelievable. I can’t speak for everyone, but Spurs nation hurts with you Lakers fans.

His dedication to winning, his hard work, the way he expected the best out of himself and his teammates... unparalleled.
Kudos to the icon. The one thing I truly applauded was his utmost respect for the game. And it showed, even in his movie.

My favorite Spurs moment during the Duncan era was beating the Lakers in game 6 of the '03 playoffs. I enjoyed it so much seeing Kobe cry since him Shaq had caused so much pain during the rivalry the previous few years. From time to time I still watch the clip and got joy out of it. As weird as this sounds I can't enjoy that clip anymore with Kobe being deceased. It takes the feeling of joy I got from it knowing that he's no longer around. I can't laugh at it and taunt my Laker friends outside of here.

One thing I found about Kobe is that he had it tough growing up not in the sense financially but socially. He was always a social outcast to some degree every where he went. Going to Italy at a young age and being the only black kid in a class filled with Italian kids. He had to adapt to that and learn Italian. Then coming back to the US and not fitting in with black American kids due to being socially different and having to relearn American culture. Then going straight to the NBA he was put in another situation of being a social out cast. He was too young when he came to the Lakers while the Laker players were all significantly older. That situation also made him an outcast again. Kobe trying to find himself socially was a bigger challenge for him then playing on the basketball court.

That even someone larger than life can be gone in an instant. I think that's what hits hard since it's not like we knew Kobe personally.
That sums it up nicely.:tu

you can die driving a car too. That really doesn't change things. Kobe been using the helicopter for most of his career and living in LA it makes sense since you don't have to worry about traffic. It's just when your number gets called you gotta go, no matter who or where you are
Yeah, I'm mostly just searching for something to blame in the wake of a tragedy, which is a normal psychological response. If I may try to rationalize it, cars are also an archaic technology, and I'm aware that they cause more deaths than any other type of vehicle - but at least with cars, you can survive the failure of a critical component. If you blow out a tire, for example, you might die, but your chances of surviving are still better than chance (especially with modern cars with autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, etc). If a critical component fails in a helicopter, your chance of dying instantly jumps to greater than 50%, if nothing else due to the fact that you're in the sky and gravity itself is a weapon against you.
I'm not even personally connected with Kobe, but if I was, I would never settle with "it was just his time to go." Fuck that. His death could have been avoided, and I want to find out exactly how and why it happened, and possibly help other people in the future avoid the same demise.

LeBron took Kobe's spot in all time scoring, and a day later Kobe takes LeBron's spot after Jordan as greatest of all time. And without even lifting a basketball...

I mean you get on Twitter and you have players talking about changing the logo to Kobe or retiring number 24 league wide. I get that he was his generation's most iconic/beloved player (not the best that was Timmy)...but it's like come on bro. Not trying to be insensitive but let's also not rewrite history either.

i appreciate your post and we have a lot in common.
growing up, i hated shaq more than i hated kobe. looking back, i'm glad i was smart enough to hate the person who had the larger impact.
later on, while they were both still playing, i was able to see that shaq was the team player and i stopped hating shaq. i never stopped hating kobe. never because of his winning but his play style.
the mortality thing i get, i was surprised this morning. it felt weird. but i hate how people are reacting like this was a terrorist attack. families are still getting separated at the border... there are larger issues...

wouldnt surprise me if they did it. I am pretty sure a lot of teams will retire his number aswell. I am shocked the Spurs weren't the first one to jump on to that one.

Of course his death could have been prevented more will come out on what went wrong with the helicopters engine and how much the weather conditions, having 9 people on board had to do with the chopper crashing. He also loved taking his helicopter places so I hope it was well maintained. If he didn't love flying in choppers everywhere he would likely be alive right now his daughter and the other people on the chopper. They were just headed to a game on it, so tragic and sad.

More details coming out the Pilot knew about the Fog and was flying at a low altitude to avoid it so he must have hit a patch of fog and had no visibility, lost control of the chopper and they flew it into the ground and crashed, chopper exploded. Makes the most sense other than mechanical failure of the chopper. They shouldn't have been taking that chopper out if they knew there was fog. I have seen car accidents happen in front of me from driving in dense fog through the years, I can't imagine the reaction time you would have flying a helicopter in a foggy patch flying at a low altitude. Poor decision to fly that chopper out in it. Tragic and sad but they knew about the fog and it could have been prevented.

First, I want to apologize directly to the young woman involved in this incident. I want to apologize to her for my behavior that night and for the consequences she has suffered in the past year. Although this year has been incredibly difficult for me personally, I can only imagine the pain she has had to endure. I also want to apologize to her parents and family members, and to my family and friends and supporters, and to the citizens of Eagle, Colo. I also want to make it clear that I do not question the motives of this young woman. No money has been paid to this woman. She has agreed that this statement will not be used against me in the civil case. Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did.

i've never been a kobe fan and i'm not one just because he died. gone too soon? okay... but so are a lot of other people. like his daughter. i actually feel bad for the loss of his daughter. but kobe? dude was a multimillionaire living the dream. i don't feel bad for him tbh, and i'll miss him even less.
His daughter to me is far worse yes absolutely. Just 13 years of age. And the other people on board as well. It’s true he did get to live out his dream. Sadly his daughter did not.

More details obviously will come out. People need to have less ego and more common sense about these things when it comes to flying. If the conditions are dangerous you simply don’t do it. No appointment is worth risking your life and the life of others like that.

He is not overrated at all.. Most people say he is top 10, you can make a case for top 5. He did it all on the court. Nothing he did not accomplish, and only a very select few did more than he did.. For a generation of Jordan fans, that had kids of their own, Kobe was their Jordan.. He deserves to get the love for his career he is going to get.. It's fair..

I personally have him top 10.. Always thought he and Duncan were the same in terms of legacy.. But you can make the case for top 5.. Again who really did more than Kobe on the court? Jordan is about it honestly. Championships and individual greatness. He was amazing. Try to remove the personal bias if you have any..

I would take Kobe over him in a 7 game series with basically equal teams. Say his 2009 Lakers VS Lebron's Heat of 2013.. He will outplay Lebron. As we know Lebron can shy away from the super pressure moments.. A 7 game series with Kobe. That's crazy pressure..

This is like Dirk with me. Someone that I hated in the moment but always respected. Then as I aged and time went by learned to appreciate more and more. And even respect.
With the benefit of time I looked back more fondly on Kobe. I enjoyed the battles and experiences more looking back which is crazy because I loved them in the moment they were happening.
This is a global event that will be felt for a long time.
I’m not into celebrity but people acting like feeling something for Kobe means you don’t care about strangers is one of the most silly things.
These types of events always show two things: 1) there’s a lot of people who still need to grow up and mature emotionally and 2) that we live in apathy and events like this stir something in people. Makes you want to assess your life because it’s a gift and it’s finite. Appreciate it and do good with your time.
