Good thread, OP.
Good time to reflect on just how badly Pop fell off a cliff in what is hopefully his last season. I mean he's been pretty bad for about 5 years now but this year is something different.
I honestly can't think of a single coach in any sport that's been the sole reason for costing his team so many wins. Just looking at the Spurs record and I could say easily say about 10 of those losses are entirely, entirely on Pop.
His treatment of Murray/White + Lonnie this season is the worst display of handling young players I've ever seen save for maybe his mentor Larry Brown. It's really, really bad and I just hope those guys can recover later in their careers long after Pop is gone...
The Kobe tragedy is a reminder of a franchise legend who pretty much set his old organization back several years from contention. What Pop has done these last couple of seasons similarly has cost the Spurs at least 3-4 seasons more of being a top 3 seed in the West.....
Just really sickening to see what he's done to this franchise, really depressing as a Spurs fan. Even Joe Paterno went out in a better way tbh.

There’s more important things in life than just basketball, Pop. Retire already so you can enjoy those other more important things before it’s too late.

For reals though. He should give up coaching to someone more passionate, who has the hunger to win. And he can just sit back and enjoy life.
Or if he doesn't want to stop being part of the organization, he can serve as whatever role he wants on the team, if he wants to mentor players behind the scenes and whatnot. Teach them about how to be a man vs a child in life. Thats fine, he seems to be good at that.
But as far as in game basketball coaching, please just give to someone else please. Preferably someone who knows how to do it the Spurs way. BECKY/UDOKA (if he wanted to come back)/BORREGO or someone else i'm not thinking of at the moment. But all those have fire for the game and truly just want to win.

Happy Bday to a Spurs and nba legend. Hope it’s a great one and it’s his first without his beautiful wife. I’m sure he will be reflecting a lot on his life with all that has gone on. Just hope he can enjoy this day.

Two, three, four, five, six years ago, people would post these kind of threads and the Pop haters would say stuff that I thought was undignified. Surely, it was; but I understand more where they were coming from, nowadays.
Happy Birthday, Gregg.

Oftenly I disagree with some of his decissions as coach, especially this season.
Anyway, I couldn't feel more respect for a coach. Because of his successful career, his legacy in the San Antonio Spurs, the impact he had in everyone around him in the team and his integrity and bravery running the extra mile off the court when nobody asked him to do it but he just feels he HAS to do it, and make some positive use of the platform and public voice he has been given. Anybody can have different opinions than him about his basketball, political, philosophical views but I can't understand how a reasonable person can't respect his figure.
Happy Birthday Pop!

I do not like Pop but I used him as an example when a young player lost his starting position to a player not as good. Life is not fair. You have to play through the adversity. He would never blame the refs. That was part of the game.

Happy birthday to the GOAT Coach.
I might disagree with a lot of his calls, but in hindsight, what did it bring Spurs to? 5 championships, 6 Finals appearances, 22 years straight playoffs appearances. And now we have a young exciting core and 4 expiring contracts that could net us the final piece or two to complete the rebuild? Missed 1 playoff, after the dismal mutiny of our franchise player? Try to compare that to any team, whatever sport. You have to give it to Pop (and RC). They know what they're doing.

The all time player/core brought "us" those accolades, not a coach and the final piece(s) that would "complete the rebuild" is a superstar/star.

That's your opinion and I respect it. But I don't think Timmy would have the 5 rings without Pop, and vice versa. How many HOFer that you know that didn't have even one single ring? Ewing, Barkley, Stockton and Malone, Nash? I'm not putting down Sloan, he's a great coach but not enough. So give Pop credits where it's due, he got us 5. Just imo.
