A few notes...

- no dates are available yet (that I could find) for Nike's Opening regionals
- for scholarship numbers, I have included the walk-ons from last year who received offers which takes the current number to 84
- with Coach Ash moving the scheme to four DL, I moved a few guys to different positions based on what I've been reading
- there are a few guys I need to confirm their redshirt status, and I left question marks next to their name for the time being

As always, feel free to throw out questions or suggestions as this is for all of us.

Listening to last week's episode of Horns247's Longhorn Blitz podcast & seeing how both UT & A&M's recruiting classes have played out these last 2-3 recruiting cycles, is it safe to say that UT has to recruit nationally & not just depend on the state of Texas?

This year will be boom or bust for Texas. Either we will have a great year and we will have a top 3 class or we will have a less than stellar year and our recruiting will again be less than stellar.

There is no reason for Texas to not have a great year, we have so many returning starters it is unthinkable for us to lose more than 1 or 2 games.

Nice to see another local kid blow up right behind Ken Seals, maybe more kids from Weatherford will continue to become known as the years go on. My nephew is friends with Cisco I asked about him when I saw he visited Texas and he said Caston liked Baylor. But I’m sure many kids jumped on the hype after this past season they had. Hopefully it wears off.

People talk a lot about how prospects and players develop from year-to-year, but there is very little mention of coaches improving their skills. When we look back at the disappointing loses during the Tom Herman era, one of TH's weaknesses has been having the team ready to play at kickoff. The slow starts have really been disappointing.

Texas has the talent and potential to go 10-2 next season, but to do so, the Horns are going to have to see clear growth by TH as a head coach.

The defense needs to work on tackling fundamentals as much as learning the new scheme. On offense, the team should be in good shape as long as they develop consistency and execute. Special teams is an area needing a lot of work. The team leadership (coaching and administration) needs to learn quickly to maintain focus, avoid petty bullshit squabbles, and Tom needs to learn how to have the team ready to go at the opening kickoff.

Not falling into an early hole, improved fundamentals on defense, and improved special teams play are the three things I am going to be looking for this fall. Two of three gets the Horns two more regular season wins. All three and it will easily result in a 10-2 season.

Tom has said that the coaches grade and evaluate each other. I guess that is not shared except when he criticizes himself.

Getting the team ready to go is painfully obvious when we receive a kickoff, get to go on offense first, and then have to burn an immediate time out? Or we take a timeout and then players are obviously confused immediately after taking the field?

Special teams, especially returns, were a disaster. We had to hope that we did not fumble or put ourselves in poor field position.

Don’t f up vs. we might run this one back... or block a punt ... big difference.

Petty squabbles basically escaped me. All I heard about was Jake Smith not being happy. I would expect kids to be disappointed, especially when they don’t play and your team looks horrible.

Rivals updated their 250 today;

- OL Bryce Foster comes in at #9
- Tommy Brockermeyer at #10 overall.
- WR Mario Willams (Plant, FL.) at #16 (he has Texas in his top 5)
- WR Quaydarius Davis at #21 (Mike Farrell, the main guy at Rivals, says he could se Davis end up as the #1 WR in this class)
- ATH Billy Bowman comes in at #32 despite being unranked prior to this update (or wasn't in the Top250 earlier)
- ATH Ja'Tavion Sanders at #41 (down from #40)
- RB LJ Johnson at #67 (up 14 spots)
- QB Jalen Milroe at #75 (down from #69)
- OL Savion Byrd at #77 (down from #12, Farrell says his high ranking was based on athleticism. They've determined he wasn't as good an athlete as they thought and the fact that he played DT in 2019 didn't help his raw status as an OT)
- LB Derrick Harris at #147 (down from #134)
- OL Hayden Conner at #240 (down from #233)
- DE Landon Jackson plummeted from #20 to #216

I know we have heard JaQuinden can play a bunch of positions but... was that a hint they plan to play JaQuinden at...?

OK then, were do we think JaQuinden ends up after this season? what position?

Ive read Johnson is more likely a guard at this point. Kerstetter at center unless Ghirmai has made progress enough to keep Kerstetter starting at RT. I haven’t heard anything about a grad transfer on the OL, so that must mean Hand likes what he has to work with right now. Hookfin and Jones look to be next up at the tackle spots, but probably another year away tho....Okafor probably starts somewhere on the OL this year, as he seemed to be the 6th man up last year.

He was not strong enough as a WR last year imo.
So he is tall, so he will grow into his body... Go up and catch the damn ball. Beat your man in the air if you cant get open.
And he is going to have to block... Dont see it based on last year.

'm really pulling for Reese Moore or Isiah Hookfin to secure the right OT position. Kerstetter is a decent OT, a good guard, but at Center he can make the league. Ghirmai is a guy that look absolutely terrible last year, but will improve at some point. I like Okafor as a guard, but he is no tackle. There is no doubt we need some guys to step up, hopefully we will learn something good from spring practice.

As of right now we have 84 scholarship players, I think after spring ball we will lose 2 or 3 guys. My guess is we will maybe take one guy in total and use the other 2 on walk on players who have earned those last scholarships.

Few thoughtson recruiting QB 1 commit. Two more recent offers to pro. style QBS. A change in offence or some coaches druther havethier own recruits.
RB one Sr. need 2 espicaly if Brown cannot play. Several in Texas good enough plus OOS.
TE lose one recent decommitment IMO not true TE size. Camp out in Grandview if answer is no move on to Argyle.
OFL need 5 or 4 more. Texas has a lot of good OFL this year

DL losse two need about four more
LB lose none have one commitment maybe ok here Attrition?
DB lose two one commit need a couplemore.
Luck to staff in recruiting to thier needs and 10-2 or possible 23 ske-doo

Wilfong put in a CB for Byrd to LSU. He isn't a player I really want, but there is no guarantee, if we can get a guy to commit like Jonah Miller, you take him. Miller is a true OT and a guy that wants to be at Texas. I think there is a reason Texas has reached out to a few more linemen. As of now we are behind the 8-ball for a lot of these top offensive linemen.

Foster has all the pressure in the world to go to aggsy.
Brock Bros are no longer a guarantee
LSU is a real threat to take Byrd.

We want 5 guys, but I'll take a guy like Miller any day and not think twice.

The offensive and defensive coaches both got fired. But Duvernay played great and Roach didn’t. So why did Roach not play as well as duvernay? Because Dev Duv is better. Plus, our secondary was a mash unit.

I’m sure NFL scouts are going to love a guy who didn’t play great who blamed the scheme.

If Roach is all that and a biscuit then let’s see his measurables at combine/pro day. If he has a crappy 40 time or bench press is that the coaches fault too?

Ehhhh...To be fair to Roach, despite UT's struggles on offense at some points this past season, UT's offense was still a top 20 offense in the nation. Which is why Herman ended up hiring an OC that was going to run (& elevate) Herman's offense instead of hiring an OC that was going to install completely new offensive system. Meanwhile not only was UT's defense 1 of the worst in the entire nation, stat-wise it was the worst UT defense in the history of the program. If UT's defense had performed the way the offense did, Todd Orlando would not have been fired. So there is merrit to Malcolm Roach's excuse.

GregoryJim

Poona Ford and Omenihu played great for us and didnt cry about the same coaches Roach has had for 4 years.

How many times did Roach make the all conference team? In a conference outsiders say plays crappy D!

When we have a bunch of ballers who take personal responsibility for the fact they can’t beat the lineman in front of them then we are going to be good again. Quit crying and work on your swim move. Quit crying and get in the film room. Quit crying and hit the weights.

Great players make great coaches. Colt McCoys offensive coordinator was Greg Davis. Blaylock and Scott’s oline coach was Mac mcWhorter. D Thomas and Scaifes TE coach was Brewster

Actually our depth is better right now than it's been in the last 10 years.

We have 11 scholarship linemen on campus and 4 incoming freshmen. Texas will lose about 3 next year but they will bring in about 6.

The ideal number of scholarship linemen is 18, minimum is 16. Texas has 9 guys right now I feel like they can count on for playing time.

Agree 100 percent on 18 being ideal but there is only 15 reason for me saying OL roon is thin. maybe they will take six and bring numbers up. Plenty of OL available this year just reel them in.

It was impossible for anyone to watch the UT defense play last year and not notice problems such as poor tackling fundamentals. Any 3* or above athlete should understand how to demonstrate proper tackling fundamentalsk if he gets recruited to play at a school the caliber of The University of Texas.

That basic fundamentals were absent from the UT defense for an entire season pretty much lies directly on the coaching staff. NFL scouts are sharp enough to figure out that if a coach can't get his 3*, 4*, and 5* players to execute high school JV concepts, the players probably aren't to blame.

Agree 100 percent on 18 being ideal but there is only 15 reason for me saying OL roon is thin. maybe they will take six and bring numbers up. Plenty of OL available this year just reel them in.

So we hire a DB coach to be an offensive analyst, makes sense. He can give a defense-minded perspective to the offensive coaches.

Is Corby Meekins a big loss?

As of now we have 84 scholarships, and we are in despirate need of another DE. I'm guessing we lose 2 or 3 guys after spring ball. But by then there might now be anyone available that can help us.

I think we are 9 deep this year with Cosmi, Angilau, Kerstetter, Okafor, C Jones, R Ghirmai, Hookfin, T Johnson, and Moore. That is a pretty good rotation group. It means we can redshirt our freshmen unless one of them is really special, but it also means we don't necessarily need a GT as long as we aren't killed by injuries as in years past.

They look at what we got returning is my guess.
Senior QB; 4 year starter.
It looks good but its thin.

And the crushing win over Utah was every bit the beat down of Georgia but the scoreboard did not show it in the Georgia game.

Also they got Tennessee up there as well, that tells me we are in the right company.
Overrated.

We should be better because our kids on D will now be upper class men. They’ve gained weight and refined their technique hopefully. Plus our offense is mostly back.

The article says baylor dropped a lot because they lost a ton of starters. LSU isn’t #1 because they lost a ton of starters including the qb. The FPI is looking at returning players.

It’s not too hard to figure out when we are more likely to struggle. If we have a lot of underclassmen starting we’re in trouble. When we have a bunch of veterans we will be better.

I bet WR will be a issue next year. Too many kids. Maybe Moore comes back and we add upper class transfer. I bet our secondary will be pretty good. A lot of highly rated recruits that are juniors now. Our weaker 2020 recruit class hurts our depth. But hopefully fewer injuries so we dont need that level of depth.

The D actually played good enough to win other than Kansas. Last 5 games gave up less than 30. Tcu was about interceptions not d. Special teams screw ups hurt in ok st. Hi Jake Smith.

If our our offense scored at least 30 per game (which it should every year) then we would have won 10 games again and maybe been in conf champ game.

24/7 is updating their Top247 today.

Most noticeable:
- Ja'Tavion Sanders up to #14 overall (up from #40)
- Billy Bowman up to #37 overall (up from #146)
- Jalen Milroe down to #96 overall (down from #68)

Other movers with Texas offers:
- RB TreVeyon Henderson (Hopewell, Va.) up to #11 overall (up 216 spots)
- LB Smael Mondon (Dallas, Ga.) up to #18 overall ( 39 spots)
- CB Nyland Green (Covington, Ga.) up to #27 overall (up 193 spots)
- RB LJ Johnson (Cy-Fair) up to #30 overall (up 76 spots)

Here's the full list (I'm not sure it's completely updated yet, these lists have a tendency to be sketchy while being updated)

A lesser Herman squad (considering so many holdovers from Strong) ended up #9, I think, after Georgia.
I could see 7th.

I felt like prior to '19, looking at the roster and experience, that '20 would look a fair amount more promising. We've had to change a lot of coaches, so that can modify predictions, but in our case hopefully all the better for how it turns out.

LSU's 24/7 site released the current official visit schedule for the Brockermeyer brothers.

Alabama in April, LSU in May, and then Auburn, Texas and Alabama (again) in June.

They are allowed to officially visit a school twice because the brothers can be a guest of one another, so basically they get 10 officials instead of the normal five.

Inside Texas mentioned a second official to Texas during the season is likely.

Is Josh Moore back practicing/working out with the team? I know he was never "off" the team. I guess Omiere will be getting a lot run this Spring. I was one thinking Lewis will breakout this Spring, but this will push him back some. Eagles, Woodard, Smith, Moore, Washington, and Omiere is solid talent to work with.

And Whittington (forgot he moved back to WR)

If he is healed, and breaks tackles shows evasiveness like he did a short time as RB, we got a guy.

So true. If he is 100%, just get him the ball in open space and let him work. Whether that's at WR or RB, it doesnt matter. Really like having three potential guys that can create electricity with the ball, Smith, Robinson and Whittington.

- ATH Julien Simon (Tacoma HS, WA.) seems real serious about visiting Texas this Spring.
- 2022 CB/ATH Domani Jackson (Mater Dei HS, CA.) is also very interested in visiting Texas (a Summer visit seems most likely). Apparently he's close with Chris Adimora.
- Texas has also been in contact with ATH Ceyair Wright (Loyola HS, CA.) and an offer should be coming his way soon.
- S Xamarion Gordon (Warren HS, LA.) is another guys Texas has been touch with. Gordon is originally from Houston, so this could be an interesting development.

Dad didn't seem very concerned when his oldest son picked walking on at Texas vs scholarship at places like Colorado.

Here is Hand's bio

Herb Hand, a veteran offensive line coach who has helped coordinate numerous dynamic offenses in his 28 years of coaching, enters his second season as co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Texas.

In 2018, all five starting offensive lineman garnered All-Big 12 honors, led by center Zach Shackelford’s first-team recognition (AP) and second-team honors (coaches). Calvin Anderson, Elijah Rodriguez and Patrick Vahe were honorable mention, while right tackle Samuel Cosmi received votes as the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and was a freshman All-American.

Hand has worked with programs that produced six conference championships in addition to three division championships. Offenses Hand has coached on have produced all-time leading rushers at three different schools including West Virginia, Tulsa and Vanderbilt.

A three-time finalist for Offensive Line Coach of the Year by Football Scoop (2008, ‘16-17), Hand was also co-coordinator for an offense that led the nation in total offense for two consecutive years (2007-08) at Tulsa, one of which is the only offense to feature a 5,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and three 1,000 yard receivers (2007). He has also coached five Freshman All-Americans.

Hand came to Austin from Auburn, where he served the past two seasons as offensive line coach under Gus Malzahn, whom he was previously co-coordinator with at Tulsa.

While at Auburn, Hand’s offensive line was named one of three finalists for the Joe Moore Award (nation’s top offensive line) in 2017, and the unit was a semifinalist for the award in 2016. During that time, along with his time at Vanderbilt, he coached players who earned 11 SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week Awards.

In 2017, Auburn ranked in the Top 30 in the nation in total offense (26th/451.6 ypg), scoring offense (27th/33.9 ppg) and rushing offense (26th/218.3 ypg), while ranking sixth in completion percentage (.668) and 15th in third-down conversion percentage (.455).

The Tigers balanced offense was one of only five nationally to average at least 230 yards passing and 215 yards rushing per game, along with Louisville, Oklahoma, Ohio State and South Florida. Auburn’s eight 40-point games during the season set a school single-season record.

Under Hand, RG Braden Smith earned All-America honors from all NCAA-recognized outlets including a first-team nod from the Associated Press, and a second-team selection from all others (WCFF, FWAA, AFCA and Sporting News). Smith also earned the SEC’s Jacobs Blocking Trophy, as the top blocker in the conference, along with being named first-team All-SEC by both the league’s coaches and the Associated Press.

Along with Smith, LT Austin Golson was tabbed third-team All-SEC by Phil Steele. The line paved the way for RB Kerryon Johnson to rank 15th nationally in rushing yards per game (115.9) and ninth in rushing TDs (18), while being named SEC Offensive Player of the Year and second-team All-America.

In 2016, Auburn led the SEC and was sixth nationally in rushing with 271.3 yards per game. Both the scoring offense and total offense ranked in the Top 50 in the nation.

Two offensive linemen in Smith and LG Alex Kozan garnered second-team All-America honors and both were first-team All-SEC selections. Right tackle Robert Leff also took home All-SEC recognition. The offensive line was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award, and Hand was a finalist for Football Scoop’s Offensive Line Coach of the Year award.

The line cleared the way for RB Kamryn Pettway to lead the SEC and rank 11th in the nation in rushing yards per game (122.4 ypg). Auburn finished 2016 with an 8-5 record and an appearance in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Hand went to Auburn after two seasons at Penn State as the run game coordinator and offensive line coach. In 2015, the unit blocked for Big Ten Freshman of the Year Saquon Barkley as he set Penn State’s freshman rushing record with 1,076 yards. In 2014, Hand’s young offensive line steadily improved and produced second-round NFL Draft pick Donovan Smith, who was chosen by Tampa Bay.

Hand coached the offensive line at Vanderbilt from 2010-13, adding run game coordinator duties in 2013. In 2013, VU’s offensive line blocked for 34 rushing touchdowns, including a school-record 14 by running back Jerron Seymour. Hand helped Wesley Johnson earn All-SEC honors in 2012 and 2013, and Johnson earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week four times before being selected in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Commodores’ Ryan Seymour was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Hand’s 2011-12 offensive lines were instrumental in Zac Stacy breaking the Vanderbilt season and career (3,143 yards) rushing records at that time.

Prior to Vanderbilt, Hand worked three years at Tulsa, serving as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Hand helped guide Tulsa to consecutive GMAC Bowl appearances behind one of the NCAA’s most explosive spread offenses, while mentoring four Freshman All-Americans.

As Tulsa’s co-offensive coordinator, Hand coached an offensive line that paved the way for the nation’s top ranked offense in 2007 and 2008. He was a finalist for national offensive line coach of the year in 2008.

In 2007, the offense became the only offense in NCAA history to ever feature a 5,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and three 1,000-yard receivers. Quarterback Paul Smith passed for 5,065 yards, while RB Tarrion Adams rushed for 1,225 yards, and the trio of Brennan Marion (1,244), Trae Johnson (1,088) and Charles Clay (1,024) each topped 1,000 receiving yards. As a whole, the offense led the nation with 543.9 total yards per game, was third with 371.0 passing yards per game and was sixth with 41.1 points per game.

A year later, the offense averaged 569.9 total yards per game, while ranking in the top 10 in both rushing (fifth/268.0 ypg) and passing (ninth/301.9 ypg) offense. The scoring offense ranked second with 47.2 points per game.

Hand spent six successful years at West Virginia, serving as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator. Hand helped the Mountaineers win three Big East Conference titles and go to five straight bowl games during the span, including a 38-35 victory over SEC champion Georgia in the 2006 Sugar Bowl. In 2006, West Virginia finished with an 11-2 record and had an offense that ranked second nationally in rushing, third in scoring, and fourth in total offense.

Prior to WVU, Hand served as an offensive graduate assistant at Clemson for two seasons (1999-2000), as the Tigers participated in the 1999 Peach Bowl and 2001 Gator Bowl.

Before that, he served as defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator at Concord College in West Virginia. He also was defensive coordinator at another WVIAC program, Glenville State, where he helped the Pioneers win three WVIAC Championships.

Hand earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Hamilton College in 1990, where he was a three-year starter on the offensive line for the Continentals, serving as team captain and earning All-NESCAC honors in 1989. He earned a master’s degree in business administration in 1993 from West Virginia Wesleyan while serving as a graduate assistant.

A native of Westmoreland, N.Y., Hand and his wife, Debbie, have three children, including two sons, Trey and Cade, and one daughter, Bailey.

His dad was an All-American for Texas
His grandfather played for Texas

If we don't get him, then we might as well pack it in because there is something seriously wrong with this program.

I get the agitation about the possibility of not landing them. But, honestly, IF our program is still struggling particularly massively during this season, you can't blame them for not sleepwalking their way to Austin. And, it's possible at that point Herman gets replaced anyway.

Even if the season isn't that bad but still shows a program not really sell-worthy, it's also hard to blame those kids. I mean, Herman has had one good (not great) season in three, and we know how horrific Charlie's tenure was, and Mack's last several years were pretty mediocre as well.

his lack--to this point, and it's been awhile now--of any real progress with the program makes one double-guess Herman's decision to keep him amidst the legal troubles he had before even playing in his first year.
All for giving a kid another shot though. It's just been a real disappointment. I thought he'd be a bona-fide TE but obviously that isn't happening

at first thought, one might think "maybe this kid makes a fairly athletic defensive end." But since one of his biggest shortcomings apparently is not mixing it up with any real aggression at TE, it seems unlikely that he'll have the tenacity at defense.

Do note that Henry Melton and some other guys who didn't make it on O' in the past became really effective on D, so there's still hope.

Do we know how Texas sees him? Is he a tackle or guard considering his height? Conner seems to be viewed as a guard and Bryce Foster is being recruited as a guard. James Brockermeyer is a center. Then you need two OT's. I haven't dug into the potential size of next years class, but is six OL one too many?

My initial reaction is he's headed for guard, and I think five or six isn't out out of the question since 2021 should be a full class.

That OL number may be determined by the quality of player they're able to sign, though.

Can they land the Brockermeyers and Byrd? Do they miss all three? Etc.

They will probably make a decision well before that.

Beating LSU in Baton Rouge with them in attendance would be a great thing.

On OL numbers IMO six be perfect five would be ok, It is a great year for OL so get them while they are available.
Spring practice and game should bring shake out of several players positions and some attrition which help in recruiting solutions.

Let me start this by saying I'm nowhere near being an NFL scout, but if I were a GM, Devin would be near the top of my list for WRs. He just has certain intangibles that set him apart. I know he doesn't have the prototypical size people are enamored with but the guy has great speed, toughness (he rarely gets tackled by one guy), he tracks the ball better than most, and above all he has excellent hands. We can honestly count the number of dropped balls he's had in 4 years on 2 hands or less (maybe even 1 hand). Plus, the guy is durable. I know I'm a Longhorn and my glasses are tinted burnt orange, but this guy is amazing. I would draft him in the 1st or 2nd round if WR was a position of need. I think he will have a double digit year NFL career. Probably one of my favorite players in the last decade. Sorry for the rant.

Wow.

I thought he was playing better at the end of the season?

He walked to the locker room during one of the games.
This is the tough part of training though.
I thought Jimbo liked these types who were a bit out of control, stealing crab legs and standing on cafeteria tables.

Would we want this fellow? Is it ATM or is it him?

I've said several times, nothing short of winning the conference and making the playoffs is acceptable for this team. We have an overhauled staff, Herman fired everyone but himself. We have a 4 year starting QB that is one of the 6 best this school has ever produced. We have starters returning at every position. There is no reason we shouldn't be favored in every game we play this year.

Like I said, if Herman can't get the job done with this group, he isn't ever going to get it done. It doesn't get much better than this for him.

As this relates to recruiting, if we lose out on the Brockermeyers then it falls right in the lap of Tom Herman.

I have no problem with Herman giving him a second chance since he has proven that he can keep his nose clean. Not everyone is going to pan out, it's just the way it is, but as long as he is a good citizen and does what he is supposed to, then keeping him around shouldn't be a question.
