tl;dr: DeRozan is playing better lately and that better play has translated into a positive impact for one of the few times in his career. Also discussed a potential contract extension.

when's the last time this front office has done something positive? You're expectations are too high

Also how can 28 games in a losing season ever Trump the other 1.5 seasons of data (not to mention the last 11 years). That’s how teams make franchise crippling mistakes.
Even if this was sustainable the amount of work around Derozan it would take to be a legit payoff team is so daunting his extension would be over by then.

What's he doing that much different and how are the team results any different?
3-7 last 10 games.
His shooting % has always been good. It's still good but it hasn't gone up. I like his assortment of moves.
LMA backs up to the trey line more often. That has helped give DD more room. Glad it took LMA and CIA Pop only 3 full seasons to figure that out.
Bryn Forms still on the floor a lot with DD.
DD's average - below average D would not be exposed as much if he was not paired with Lock Down Bryn for the Spurs perimeter D.
DD is doing fine but not sure what you think has changed OP.

Unless Pop gave Demar back spasms, he hasn't figured out how to make him a positive asset. Derozan's a ball dominant bucket of empty stats that has a negative impact on the team.

Hopefully a positive asset in a trade package

If this shitty season makes him opt out and walk this summer it will have been worth it.

I have no issues with DD. I find him pretty fun to watch and I think he is pretty good. He isn't a Leonard and people should probably stop labelling him as the guy who was traded for Leonard. In saying that, if they extend DD, we will have another pretty poor season on our hands unless one of Murray/White/Walker step up. If all three do, then the team are a deep playoff run team. But its more likely they won't all step up at the same time or ever. By the time 2021 offseason rolls around, Spurs would have cap space and roster spots to build a team around the young nucularist and DD. By the time that happens, DD would be 32 and LMA (if he still with the team) I would assume be a role player at his age.
So as you can see, Spurs are in a tough position. They didn't make any trade deadline moves, in which I assume was to keep the 2021 offseason cap room. But if they commit to DD, you pretty much have to trade Gay for a lengthy contract who is ready to contribute and probably also use your full MLE on a 3 to 4-year contract.

Given PATFO’s track record lately, this may end up in the worst possible scenario.

Thanks for the article. Even a bit of promising news is good to hear. LMA shooting 3's has been good to see despite folding in the 4th quarter so often of late. I'm looking forward to the last 28 games. Doubt the 8th seed is a possibility unless there are some devastating injuries in Memphis.

I hope Derozan stays on the spurs. He's flawed but at least he has a lot of heart and actually competes every game. Can't say that about the other players

He isn't staying with you guys lol. He is opting out and signing with a team that will build around him and allow him to be an all-star again. Keep dreaming if you think he's staying with you guys.

If he does he does. However the Raptors won't see a ring again until the Spurs trade another disgruntled superstar in his prime out of pure stupidity.

I am a Raptors fan and a Demar Fan. I'm just letting you know that it's been a displeasure watching him the last year and a half on this team. He has pretty much wasted 2 years of his prime and I'm sure he feels that way too. You think he wants to run it back for a few more seasons? lol.

DeRozan looks like a much better player in SA the h ever did in Toronto. When he played in Toronto most people thought his game was disgusting here in SA he gets credit from rational people for being a well rounded player.

He's still the same mentally weak player that can't shoot 3s and is a bottom 20 defensive player. He's basically rajon rondo with a low post game. It was a joke when the spurs traded for him and it's a joke that he could even be resigned

Pegs don't fit in round holes.
Fuck DeMar.
Sign and trade DeRozan this summer (if possible).
He's an "instant offense" specialist but this team is not good enough to need such a player yet.
It's a huge gamble to get rid of him but sometimes you have to face the abyss before you turn the corner.

I thought the Spurs already found that way when they benched him for "back spasms." Lo and behold Murray and White are actually good players, they just needed Demar out of the way.

His most positive use as an asset would hopefully be as a trade piece. I like DeRozan, and I think he's probably the Spurs second best player, but if the Spurs have their sights set on returning to prominence, it probably can't be done with him as the centerpiece.

Idk if he wasn't just shooting for ASG. Now that he's not selected, I hope he's not back to mediocre self. I'm not hating, but he's Debbie downer. Just play, take those open 3's, try to distribute and enough complaining.

Depending on the cost of the extension, I don’t mind bringing him back.

I hope he is back to his mediocre self so the Spurs aren't tempted to extend him.

I'm convinced his presence has slowed down the development of White, Murray, and Walker. They defer to him and it's hard to blame them-- he's the "star," he gets the most minutes from the coach, he has the highest salary and usage rate on the team... his lack of 3 & D will always present a challenge to winning, especially in the playoffs. I just can't justify in any way making him the highest paid player on the team. To think Manu took regular pay cuts while being one of the best advanced stats guys in the league while DeMar gets maxed out just shows how strange perception (especially with scoring) can be in contrast with results. Manu was obviously the vastly superior player.

I won't argue with that, and I think they could walk away from DeMar, and like Moneyball, reconstruct him in the aggregate. I absolutely think they can get his production as increases from White, DJ, and Walker. You would need something like 18/17/13 from them to keep what they have now, and add scoring to pick up his departure. They play SO much better when he's not on the floor. In the last game, they got exactly what they needed in the aggregate: Murray 25, White 17, Walker 6. That's really close to their current scoring plus his average. He wasn't on the floor, and none of them even played 30 minutes! They all defend and shoot better than he does.

What I dont understand is how your FO didn't make a trade last summer or at the very least, the past trade deadline. It's an awkward fit and both parties are aware that it is not a happy marriage and that should have been obvious to your FO by the end of last season. Dude cannot wait for the summer to leave this team, that is GUARANTEED.
Demar knows he will never make another allstar team if he stays with this team and his career will dwindle into oblivion if he doesn't make a change NOW (This summer).

I agree, he fucking sucks and if all he cares is making the All Star team, we should ship back to the East.

That makes no sense. How can you ship him back to the east when you guys have absolutely no leverage? If you guys needed to do that, it should have been done at the deadline but your incompetent FO dropped the ball on that one again. He is gone this offseason...

My god you do realize that if we're being honest DeRozan is an Inferior player to even a 34 year old LMA right. Being on the Spurs has nothing to do with him not making the All Star game hell LMA made it last year and the year before that. Hell while on the Spurs LMA made All NBA 2 years out of the five he's been here. I like DeMar but if he was as good as LMA was he would have made the All Star Game and received accolades.

It's pretty simple, and I think their requirements aren't that complicated, and obviously weren't met. You don't want to downgrade, again, and you don't want longer contract(s).

Build around a guard who can't shoot the three in 2020? That's rich. I hope you're right that he's walking though. No sense in making a huge mistake extending him just because the Spurs already made a huge mistake trading for him.

Nicely put.
Don't you think other teams take note of that? He's only going to work for a team that needs a good scoring no 3 no D guy. I can't think of a team. Also it appears no teams are as Light Years Behind as the Spurs FO currently is. I do think Morris fucked them. But he has always seemed sneaky to me. I can honestly say (no 20/20) I would not have done the Berti deal until Numb Nutts Morris was signed on the dotted line.
So to the OP subject, the answer is No.
