What makes you think the 'spike' is going to be small? Texas, for instance, is re-opening and the COVID-19 cases are on the rise. I think we'll see deaths double.
Unfortunately, yes.
Well the death toll in Texas was already small, so it "doubling" wouldnt be a very big deal, and the whole cornerstone of the argument was that a disease with a 0.5% kill rate is not worth shutting down the entire populace over because you will do more harm than good.

Even in Texas which, you're right, has a relatively low death toll it's close to 2.7% of those infected have died. I actually think the figure in Texas will be a lot more than doubled due to the crowds we're seeing. The 'thinning of the herd' mentality seems to be what going on. I guess we are quickly going to find out. Hopefully the spike won't be as bad as I'm thinking, but I'll be very surprised. I say so mainly because it looks to me as if people think it's over. Again 70,000 Americans dying in two months is more than died in Vietnam in 10 years.

Shams Charania is reporting that the NBA could be preparing to start the 2020-21 season on Christmas Day.
This would be a best-case scenario for the NBA if the season doesn't start on time, as Christmas Day is already the unofficial start of the season for casual fans and the most popular day of the season for most others. The league is still kicking around ideas of how to handle the end of the current season and the start of the next one, and is considering various scenarios for each of them. But you have to wonder if a start on Christmas Day in 2020-21 could carry over and reshape the entire NBA calendar in the future.

Just saw one for GSW and luckily it was Game 1 Round 2 of the 2013 Finals. Fun stuff....would at least to tape them all. Anybody?

You made this political. Re-open is a Fox/GOP trope. No other groups are saying it.
The deaths won’t just double once. Exponential growth is a concept you people can’t seem to wrap your heads around

We will likely lose well over 100k people. absolutely tragic.
But putting it into proper perspective, the death rate is likely, actually, below 1%. So many antibody tests around the world have shown us that 25-50% of people have it and have no idea as they are asymptomatic.
And I have been all for the mitigation. And I still think everyone should wear a mask in public for the foreseeable future -- but looking at our 'curve' in comparison to other nations, and I wonder how much good it has actually done. We have been around 30k cases per day since the beginning of April. After over a month of this, if it is truly effective, one would think we would be on a downward slope by now.

Well, when the list of essential businesses includes liquor and convenience stores, your lock down probably isn't tight enough.
The effectiveness is measure by the fact that the curve didn't spike out of control. Flat and steady is a good thing for the half measures taken, but also a thing of the past with the loosening of restrictions.

Downward slope would probably require hard lockdowns and/or South Korea level mitigation efforts. There is a reason our media has talked about flattening the curve. Flattening the curve is only about reducing the speed of its growth from a huge spike that overwhelms our medical system to a less sharp, more spread out growth. But a flatter curve is still an increasing one until a fairly signifcant portion of the population is infected (say 40%).

How hard can it be to set up a camera + microphone and have the coach/es watch the workouts remotely? What a peculiar specification, I'm guessing it's to avoid the risk for older HCs like Pop who'll stubbornly want to be there, but it's a very easily circumvented restriction.

This spurs team was pretty forgettable and not fun to watch. I do not want to see anymore of them this year. Plus the playoffs in this current setup would be trash. I would love to see Lebron and #2 not have the opportunity to win another title. These are the reasons why I don't want the season to comeback.

I don't think its about getting it done just to play it out. I think it has to do with getting something into action so they know how to adjust and how it feels under these conditions. Of course the money doesn't hurt, but its more of a dress rehearsal for next year.

Adam Silver told players to not expect fans if the season resumes, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Silver said a season decision can go into June, and there is going to be risk until there is a coronavirus vaccine. Silver also told players it’s safer to play in one or two locations than flying around to cities and facilities. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.com adds that players told Silver that they were pressure from organizations to return to volunteer workouts at facilities, and Silver said he'd address it with teams. Silver also said he was hopeful play could resume if a player tests positive for COVID-19.
NBA teams opening practice facilities for workouts will be allowed to administer tests to asymptomatic players and staff, as long as testing "has become readily available" in their locality.
Adrian Wojnarowski cites the Magic, Clippers and Lakers as teams likely to test "every players and staff member entering facilities," even if they are asymptomatic. If access to the coronavirus test expands rapidly, the NBA might be able to open more facilities and push forward with a quarantined "bubble" approach to resuming the season. For now, teams will continue following strict protocols for a limited re-opening of gyms and training facilities.

Silver keeps dragging his feet. If he wants to save the season he should have started doing it weeks ago. The only thing I could see making any sense is the Walt Disney World bubble ChumpDumper keeps suggesting. I'd tweak it as:
* End the regular season with standings as they are. No one is missing the playoffs on a tiebreaker so it seems fair enough.
* All players, coaches, team and league staff, refs, announcers, hotel staff, and families for the 16 playoff teams enter the bubble and quarantine for two weeks
* Three or four week training camp
* Then playoffs, with teams and their staffs exiting the bubble once eliminated.
* The money generated is shared throughout all teams in the league, with players on all teams getting the fraction of the earnings correspondng to their current contracts.
I don't think it happens, it's really complicated and expensive and won't generate a ton of money like a real season and playoffs without fans in stadiums and with general apathy from the public likely not making it the ratings bonanza Silver might hope it to be. Season is over. Just gotta hope the country is in decent enough shape by Christmas to begin a new season.
There is already projections of $400 million gone if regular season not reopened. Collectively, regional TV contracts wouldn't be completely fulfilled. There are estimates of 25% of the season, with playoffs, still remaining. Regional TV stops during the playoffs so let's say, 20% of 1 billion in Regional TV money is affected, or 200 million. Lost Basketball Related Income (BRI) from people not in arenas for playoffs is another estimated $200 million.
That's 800 million and money from sponsorship deals in the different NBA stadiums still isn't discussed along with a host of other revenue streams affected or shut down completely. How much money from player salaries being withheld or not paid all together if season or playoffs don't happen? All of these factors are still to play out where the NBA could be looking at a shortfall that brings the salary cap from a projected 115 million/139 luxury cap for 2020/21 season to 100 - 102 million/126 lux cap.
My main thought in an offseason where the draft class and the UFA class are considered week for 2020, how much more important next year is for the NBA! Silver needs to try to have as many lines of revenue open to try to get the cap back up to close what it was this year (109 million) for when the draft class and UFA class are flowing with talent in 2021! How many teams and players are hoping to capitalize on improving their situations in 2021 offseason and instead of a cap werth 117 to 120 million, the cap is almost 105 million! That would be a major difference for max player contracts and how teams will structure their rosters!

The reality is, you can’t do it. If one player tests positive, they have to shut it down. He will have infected players on his team, and opponents for up to two weeks before symptoms show. Those other teams will have infected teams that THEY played. The season needs to be written off before they spend a bunch of money setting up a bubble, get into it, and have to cancel it anyway

There is reportedly a "belief around the league" that teams currently out of the postseason picture will not resume play this season.
An unnamed "front office executive" told The Ringer, "[T]he thought is that the league won’t have the time or resources to bring all 30 teams to one location and play out the regular season." The logistics are easier when 16 teams are involved, compared to 30, and teams without immediate championship aspirations might even prefer to sit it out. According to one Eastern Conference assistant coach, "Our players have an itch to get back on the court, but the organization prefers they not return and risk injury when we are already looking ahead to next season."

You shed virus at the highest rate before you show symptoms, and will infect people. I’m guessing that inside their bubble, they’ll feel safe, and not take precautions. It would spread like wildfire if it got in.

One of the major options to save the salary cap, if the regular season AND PLAYOFFS are shut down, is you completely stop paying the players! No percentage withholding in escrow, you just stop. Because that escrow holding isn't about money for the players down the road so much as it is a parachute to help with the salary cap from free falling as badly.
How much of what we're seeing about bubbles, Disney world, Vegas, is basically Silver not wanting to come to the players union, ie Chris Paul, and to an extent LBJ, and say "your paychecks are stopping effective immediately"? And in the players cases, like LeBron, who have already been payed the vast majority of their salaries, they would be asked to RETURN SALARY because they would have technically been paid for games they didn't play.
Also, how is the NBA, Disney, and Turner getting away with collecting full payment over the the months of March and April from the public, especially ones with cable and satellite, without showing any live games?? Shouldn't they be prorating a portion of those revenues back to the customers?? It's like buying a concert ticket, going to the concert, it gets canceled, but the band keeps the money without performing. They'd be sued if that happened. Why is the public supposed to just keep it's wallets open for the NBA, DISNEY, and TURNER when the public is the ones loosing their jobs to the tune of 30+ million unemployed and growing?

Adam Silver told players that the 2019-20 season could conclude as late as October, according to Jared Dudley.
Dudley is an NBPA team representative for the Lakers, along with Danny Green, and he wrote on Twitter, "[October] was the latest I've heard ... The thinking is the longer it takes to finish [2019-20], the longer they can push back the start of next season until December or January. Then giving the league a possible chance for fans if a vaccine or treatment comes available." Silver said fan revenue accounts for roughly 40% of the league's income, so allowing crowds into arenas for the 2020-21 season is the obvious goal.

Yup. Just saw that even the white house is having trouble containing this virus and they do random weekly testing of absolutely everyone who works there and have done daily testing of key personnel, and that is of the quick acting test.
That should be chilling for the NBA. If there is a situation that is as close to a bubble that you can get it's the white house because of the "leadership" implications.

Mark Cuban said during an interview on Monday that members of the Mavericks are looking into several changes in policies on how to safely get fans into the American Airlines Center and keep them safe once they're seated, assuming the league returns to play in front of fans at some point.
Ideas being discussed include staggered arrival times, assigned parking spaces with unique pathways to the arena, sneeze guards and lightweight hoodies so that if "somebody two rows behind you sneezes, you're not freaked out," Cuban said. “It may take a little bit longer for everybody to get into their seats to start the game, but we’ll accommodate that and go from there.” We still don't know if the current season will ever be completed, or if fans in the stands for next season is even a possibility. But when the time finally comes for arenas to open again, it sounds like the Mavericks will be ready.
so were going to have to mask&glove up with hoodies and sneeze guards all around us to watch sports?! Uh GospursGo

Would anyone here in SA actually enjoy driving out to the ghetto and do all of this just to watch the Spurs big 3 of Aldridge, DePression, and Bryn Forbes. And this is after you break the bank on tickets, parking, food and drinks (which brings it's own set of issues), etc?

The National Basketball Players Association sent a memo to agents stating that the sense is that both the players and the NBA would like to finish the 2019-20 season.
Agents were also informed that Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Jayson Tatum, Kyle Lowry and Dwight Powell are serving on a new committee that will work with the NBA on potential plans to be able to play safely with the threat of Covid19. It sounds like soccer is planning to start in early July, baseball is rumored to be doing the same, the NFL appears to be all systems go this fall and NASCAR is returning this weekend. It's previously been reported that the NBA won't likely make a decision about returning until June, but these latest developments could potentially change that date.

I wonder what happens if a few star players start getting hurt. I know they are talking about a 3 week warmup period but I am guessing once that is over they will go straight into PO. The star players (especially older) take weeks into the season before they are warmed up. Not only that they will be playing some b2b I am guessing to try and get it done. So you are going to have players not used to the rigor of playing jumping straight into playing very competitive basketball with little to no rest in between. This is increasing the risk for players.

The stars may front the union, but they don’t run it. Everything comes down to a vote, and there are many more minimum salary guys than guys making 30m or more. The lower earners tend to save more. They won’t be desperate to go back.

The way I read all this is:
1.) East - each team plays all the other teams once. West - how will they determine which 8 teams you play? Maybe based on which teams you have played less already during the season?
2.) If either 8 seed finishes four games ahead (4+? Or >4?)
- Magic are +5 on the Wizards. So if they hold lead, there will be no play-in in east
- Grizzlies are +4 on the field. So all their fans that complain ... they can put money where mouth is and if they hold lead, can advance directly. But we all know they had hardest schedule remaining. Will be hard to keep lead on five other teams.
- Not sure how this works for teams that have played different number of games to date
3.) In East, if there is a play-in, it will be first team to win two games between Magic (or Nets if Magic pass them) and Wizards.
4.) In West, there are five teams competing for the nine seed. (1) Worst two play, and (2) winner plays one of other four. Remaining two play each other. (3) Winner of those two games then plays for the nine seed. (4) Winner plays in best of three with the Grizzlies ... or theoretically the Mavs, although that’s almost impossible.
If this is true, from Spurs’ perspective, key will be to avoid the bottom two and an extra play-in game.

I doubt we’ll see any of the stars not show up but a team with a legit role player who doesn’t want to participate will definitely have an impact on the playoffs.
These games will feel like scrimmages the teams do during training camp.
i remember in band when we would finish our show during a big competition at the Alamodome, we would then go into the stands and watch the other shows... I wonder if that’s how the teams will do it. I think in the end a lot of players are not going to show up it’s just not worth trying to get into game shape to come back for 8 to 10 games for most. Not being in basketball shape lends to potential career ending injuries added on the the very real possibility of catching the virus.

It would be funny if they did that during the playoffs. You see a team like the Clippers come in and watch the Lakers play some playoff opponent. I can picture Beverly and Montrez heckling Lebron.
Haha that would be great
It would definitely make it more fun to watch, seeing what another team does while in the stands.

A bunch of rich bitches. A lot of people wish they had a job to go to. Besides these are world class athletes that... if anyone can... would feel minimal impact even if they get sick.
Regarding the racial tensions... that's about the only one I can kind of see their point. I always said that if NFL or all pro athletes really wanted to stick it to the man they would forego their salaries and sit it out. This might be something like that.
I hope it resumes though.. I just want to be entertained.

Agreed I feel the same way. Obviously money is fueling the NBA and these other leagues to still play there season but as long as Covid is around they are all compromised. Honestly I don't believe we can have a legit season until the fall of 2021.

It's like the English soccer leagues -- if you play well, you get to move up (in this case to a better hotel).

Nah, read about it though.
They gave teams with the better record better accommodations...this was their way of compromising for "home-court advantage" which they won't really be getting in games. That's why the Spurs are stuck there with teams like the Suns, Wizards, and Pelicans.
Grand Destino is rated as a high-end resort.
Grand Floridian is a 5-star hotel.
Yacht Club is a 4-star hotel.
I'm sure it's not like a Motel 6 or anything, but it's definitely the worst of the three.

Meh, the Grand Floridian is overrated imo. It's very nice, yes. But it's gotten pricier and pricier every year and isn't anything special compared to some of the other places. I haven't seen the rooms at the Yacht Club but that whole area with Yacht and Beach Club/Boardwalk/Swan & Dolphin is super nice. The difference in how nice they are is all super marginal. I don't know much of anything about the Grand Destino from what I understand it's pretty much brand new, but all 3 places are probably very nice.

Trevor Ariza will not participate in the resumption of the NBA season in Orlando with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Instead, Ariza will use a one-month visitation period granted by the mother of his son to spend time with the 12-year-old as the parents work through a custody case. With Rodney Hood also done with an achilles injury, Mario Hezonja will really have to step up and is probably going to be a value play in DFS, at least initially. And the loss of Ariza's versatility and defense is a big blow to the Blazers.

Nah, Lillard would have still bitched about not being given a chance.
Isn't the magic number 70 games in the season to get full payment on TV contracts? That's my guess as to how they came up with the number, along with 8 being enough games to give Phoenix and Washington (and the Spurs) a fighting chance of getting to #9.
But if that's the case, wouldn't the league have had to invited all 30 teams?

The issue was figuring out how to resume in a controlled setting with as few cases breaking out as possible...and getting Zion on TV.
They're going to do it too, Orlando being a new hotspot be damned. I just hope we don't have a Finals headlined by Patrick Beverly and Khris Middleton because Kawhi and Giannis are in quarantine.
