View Full Version : Why should the cruise line industry get a bailout?

They don't employ Americans. They don't get to pretend they're not American companies when the taxman comes but then come with their hands out expecting us to hand them billions. Carnival should go ask Panama for a bailout, Royal Caribbean can go get their bailout from Liberia, and Norwegian can go get their bailout from Bermuda. They don't want to pay taxes here and employ Americans according to US labor laws? Then not our problem when they're going to go belly up.

Fully agreed.

They are World Champion Tax Evaders,

so fuck 'em when they ask AMERICAN taxpayers to bail out their toxic, pathogenic asses

you missed one:

"All of Disney Cruise Line's ships are officially registered (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_convenience) with the Bahamas."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Cruise_Line (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Cruise_Line)

As always, taxpayers bail out the companies and people that own the politicians.

It isn't that they won't employ Americans, but few Americans are willing to work under those conditions. Shit pay, 8-10 month contracts with ZERO days off, 12-16 hour work days, having to smile as you serve some of the biggest gluts in society. It's probably an awesome job for third-worlders who get all of their living expenses/medical covered by the cruise line as they wire their entire paycheck back home to family.

Regardless... they're going to hurt, but I honestly think the cruise lines (the big ones anyway) are going to be okay. People are still going pack Disney World, casinos, and cruise ships once it is deemed "safe". It's human nature.

They shouldn't get any bailout though.

:lol I’ve never seen a food fight. The only fights I’ve ever seen are like when people who have been laying in the sun all day drinking and then decide to pick shit with their spouse. You just want to slap them both lol

Fat people arent a problem at the food. The problem is at the elevators. I took my first cruise in 1994 and sooo many things have changed, but not fat people at the elevators. They have to get in before anyone gets out, I don’t know why. And usually its more than one at a time. The absolute worst is fat people on scooters! They are mean. But like in a mall or big hotel, they mostly just impede traffic flow.

Truth bombs.

The airlines can declare chapter 11 bankruptcy and fight with their lenders about it in court. They were irresponsible with the bailout money they got last time and their lenders were equally as irresponsible for not restricting how bailout money was used. This is a matter for bankruptcy judges to figure out not the American tax payer.

As the baby boomer generation ages, look for many other cruise lines to get in on the trend of accommodating them. As time goes by, more and more options will be added to the already-impressive array that is currently out there. Baby boomers have a lot of pull, and they can rest assured that cruise lines will continue to cater to their whims and demands as much as possible.

One anecdote: I had a case that got thrown into C11 late last year. The Bankruptcy judge was horrible. One of the most blatantly slanted and borderline dishonest judges I've been in front of. Ridiculously pro-debtor. Didn't really give a fuck about any of the creditors, secured or not.

Not saying that that's representative of all bkr judges. But from my limited experience, airlines could still come out of all this in a pretty advantageous position. Obviously, the CEOs and stockholders would get more fucked than a bailout (which is why it will happen), but they'd still receive a "bail out" of sorts in C11.

I’d be ok with that because it would freeze up future credit markets for airlines unless they modified their behavior.

Everyone always views the creditor as an aggrieved party in bankruptcies but in the end they extended credit to airlines that have historically always needed bailouts/relief in an economic downturn. They should have had debt covenants restricting stock buybacks.

Ha the petri dish thing is the dumbest thing I hear related to cruise ships :lol I’m a critical care/trauma nurse. I’ve worked my entire career in hospitals. I challenge you to find a place in your favorite hospital, say the icu waiting room or the dining room. Sit there for a couple of hours and count the number of cleaning staff that come by cleaning up. Then book yourself a cruise and find a place (anywhere) to sit for a couple of hours and count the number of staff you see coming by mopping and wiping down all surfaces. The disparity will shock you. I’ve done it and never gone more than 3 minutes without seeing someone. Heck in my last ICU our housekeeper also took care of the waiting room. I guarantee some days she never entered it!

Better hope no one here hits you with a black light with all that semen shielding you're doing for cruise liners. Did you have 3 year olds smearing mashed potatoes into the wall fabric of the waiting rooms or did you live in one for 7 days where you couldn't possibly leave? Two completely different scenarios and not mutually exclusive. Cruise ships are cesspools, no need to semen shield for them.

you aren't wrong though as far as cleanliness goes. the people on board are disgusting slobs but the crew cleans religiously from what i witnessed on my 2 cruises.

hospitals are horrible! i've witnessed all sorts of shit in the handful of times i've been to the VA and regular hospitals. when my grandfather was dying and has respiratory problems the nurses left cavicide wipes container wide open. anyone who knows of cavicide, wavicide, madacide, etc knows those agents are harsh to breathe in let alone get on your skin; cancer causing agents that wipe clean hepC and the like from surfaces but should always be kept close and in a safe spot. i use wavicide at the shop, wear gloves at all times, and if i spray a bit too much it feels like my nose is burning on the inside and i get choked up. very harsh agents!

Yeah but it’ll just be another annual vaccine we have to take at some point.

We'll also develop a herd immunity in addition. Quote from the doctor who eradicated smallpox:

Since it's novel, we’re still learning about it. Do you believe that if someone gets it and recovers, that person thereafter has immunity?

So I don't see anything in this virus, even though it's novel, [that contradicts that]. There are cases where people think that they've gotten it again, that's more likely to be a test failure than it is an actual reinfection. But there's going to be tens of millions of us or hundreds of millions of us or more who will get this virus before it's all over, and with large numbers like that, almost anything where you ask “Does this happen?”

Eventually, we will get to the epidemiologist gold ring.

[B]What’s that?

That means, A, a large enough quantity of us have caught the disease and become immune. And B, we have a vaccine. The combination of A plus B is enough to create herd immunity, which is around 70 or 80 percent.

https://www.wired.com/story/coronavirus-interview-larry-brilliant-smallpox-epidemiologist/

I also think this virus was circulating around the US way before the first reported case. Probably in December. I don't see how such a globally connected country, and to China in particular, got it that late. I tend to believe that there were tens of thousands carriers out there who were asymptomatic to mild that have already recovered, well before we labeled it a crisis. I hope when all is said and done, and the data points are counted (or extrapolated), we'll be looking at something not much more dangerous than the flu, which will calm everyone down.

Yea but the norovirus that takes down cruise ships doesnt necessarily originate from the ship or even from poor food handling practices. Anyone who boards the ship can spread it on surfaces, hence the constant wiping down of everything and the perpetual “wash your hands” psas on board.

Required to kill Cdiff on surfaces - so it quite literally does help for shit.

Point is... it doesn't have to be bleach, any wipe can be used, the floors are filthy even after being cleaned.

you claim i'm stupid blaKKKe while also believing hepC will die from bleach. :lmao

does coronavirus die from bleach? doubt it but any precaution is better than nothing. i never said not to do whatever you can to try to minimize its spreading even more from surfaces and whatnot. i simply pointed out that it's basically bullshit.

I didn't mean to start an entire conversation regarding the merits of bleach... it was an inside joke for MrsMaalox. Basically... I was just agreeing that hospitals are fucking disgusting. Once a patient is transferred/discharged, a housekeeper goes in for half an hour and sprays shit down, swiffers the floor, and makes the bed. If you were to follow up behind and wipe down a surface, the towel/wipe will be black. That's all.

you are correct sir. hospitals aren't the sterile environments most would believe them to be.

Fwiw... the last cruise I went on didn't allow passengers to come into contact with any food at the buffet. Staff had to plate everything for you. Plus they had staff posted at all entrances to food service areas and the kid areas making everybody wash or sanitize their hands before entry (shouldn't be necessary, but people are fucking nasty).

3rd world staffers carrying exotic illness make it better when they handle your food :lol

I trust their hygiene more than fat Americans riding in scooters. Plus one person handling food is a lot less risk for contamination than a hundred people digging through it.

I like to travel internationally but I’ve never once wanted to go on one of those big ship cruises. Now a private luxury yacht like you see in Monaco would be totally different...

I don't want to go on anything for longer than a couple days that I cannot leave if I want.
