Key point - When the ESPN guys were asking him if he felt unappreciated they were talking about being unappreciated by the media / general public. Tim answers no, and brings it back to his teammates and how they all were working towards the same goal every year. I love how he just completely ignores the premise of their question. For Tim, it was all about winning and the team. Being appreciated by the media doesn't even show up on his radar.

I would say Tim Duncan was the greatest 1 pick of all time considering he didn't leave the Spurs and was able to win 5. Only other 1 pick you can say was better was Kareem since he won 6 but he had to leave Milwaukee and go to LA to win 5 more. What Tim did with the Spurs was really hard and something you probably wont ever see replicated again

Agree without a doubt. What a great return on investment for a number 1 pick if you draft him. Spurs got 5 titles out of him and a ridiculous regular season win percentage above 70 percent. The regular season success is one of the most impressive things to me. I think Spur fans took it for granted of how hard it is to get 50 wins per a year. Tim made it look very easy.

The only other No. 1 pick that won 5 with the team that drafted him was Magic Johnson.

He is easily top 10 of all-time, and at that point, they are all interchangeable for different reasons. Different eras, different play styles, different opponents...but as a kid who was born and raised in San Antonio, it was an honor to watch one of the best ever play for 18 years with a Spur on his chest.

I'm glad Tim is getting his flowers dude was clutch, a great citizen. Watching from Wake or as a SPUR against my Lakers, dude has earned my respect and a place (starting) in my all time top 5.
But ...
Watching all you (not all Spur fans) Kobe hating, that called him rapist, and disrespected him over my years living in San Antonio and on on Spurstalk watching TODAY ... Kobe, even death, over shadow your greatest player makes me so giddy. :spin Couldn't happen to a better franchise except the Celtics but wait, Kobe is doing it to them (KG) too!
Doesn't bring back Kobe or erase the sense of loss for him not being there ... but he was already gonna be the headliner of the class anyway...but after the crash... It will be a tsunami of Kobe love by ESPN etc.
Seems petty I know but fuck those that still trash this man in death (again not all) or make smart comments about his wife or daughter deserve this shit.

Duncan does NOT care about all the hoopla, he never did as you know.. So even if Kobe were still here, Kobe could go right ahead and go out of his way to make the day all about himself and Tim would NOT care.. If Kobe played with Tim and NOT Shaq, they would have won 10 rings together. Because Tim would be fine with Kobe and his diva BS over being the perceived top dog as long as the team wins.. The media is giving Tim plenty of love heading into tonight... Great stories are being written about Tim left and right.. Tim will be his usual understated self tonight, likely keep it short and to the point. I have no issues with anything.. Tonight will be great...

You do realize this was directed at over the top haters of Kobe, right? If that is not you, you should be great with whatever flowers Tim gets and the Kobe hoopla shouldn't bother you but if it does ...something about the shoe fits?

But I do agree if not 10, a Duncan/Kobe pairing would at least win 8 titles. Always preferred the consistent greatness along with better defense and versatile offense of Tim over Shaq who was more dominant but less skilled

yeah and again he was laughing each time he brought it up during the tape delay.

Apparently Shaq did a Jordan "and I took it personally" gimmick because he was mad David Robinson took all the attention in San Antonio and played better than him in his early NBA career. He made it up the rumor to self motivate himself .

Enjoy the hof ind...no wait the Naismith Kobe memorial featuring TImmy, KG Rudy and some other randoms. :fro

I don't care about Tim not being the center of attention. I have enjoyed all the festivities so far. Seeing David,Tony,Bruce at this event to celebrate Tim has been great. It brings back a lot of great nostalgia. It's also great to see them all smiling and laughing together.

Speaking of HOF Ben Wallace is getting in now..

So the Basketball HOF is now putting in players that averaged 6 PTS and 9 Reb..

https://media1.giphy.com/media/XD4qHZpkyUFfq/giphy.gif

Ben Wallace has value -- he cemented just how bad Orlando is.

Orlando threw Wallace in to match salary in a sign-and-trade for Grant Hill. Hill did next to nothing (in light of his contract) and Wallace won a ring as a throw in.

That was the year Orlando also tried to steal Duncan. Orlando remains ringless.

Wallace has my vote for the HOF.

It’s unbelievable to think that between Tim and Kobe, they have ten championships playing in the same era.

From 1999 through 2014, there were only 6 different NBA champions over 16 years.

Spurs (5)
Lakers (5)
Miami (3)
Pistons (1)
Celtics (1)
Mavericks (1)

That's just bonkers.

Since then, the Warriors and Cavs had to have their 5-year run which made the Finals pretty predictable for a while. I'd like to think there is more parity now with both conferences seeming pretty wide-open...but would not be surprised to see the Lakers in the Finals again. We should see a new team from the East, at least.

Parity is difficult with all of this player collusion going on today. Gone are the days of great all-time players like Tim Duncan, wanting to compete with other all-time great players in same era.. Now it is all about what superstar is your buddy? And why aren’t you playing with them? Honestly it’s at the point where I want to stop watching basketball.. Duncan never won a DPOY.. So how much weight does that really carry?

He was the defensive cornerstone of a championship team, his defense wasn't for nothing, Tim was also the cornerstone of champioship teams. Can't compare them the way you try to do. If you take Ben out they never win the chip or even compete at the highest lvl for all those years that they did.

You edge me out by a year when it comes to seeing his whole entire career. His sophomore year is when he became a star. You got to see him before he was a star which was his freshman year. It had to be amazing to see him go from a project role player to a superstar within one year.

If advanced stats were more prominently around in the early 2000s, Timmy would've won multiple DPOY awards. These days, people realize that things like defensive win shares, defensive rating, and defensive BPM-- despite their relative shortcomings & occasional inaccuracies-- show at least as much and often more than something like raw blocks per game or steals per game.

Well, Jordan’s was a spite filled shit show. Not a high bar to clear. I mean, he invited his HS coach to attend for the sole purpose of dissing him during his speech for cutting him his Sophomore year. I was embarrassed for him, and I don’t even like him.

And people in the media kissed his ass, and praised that train wreck of a speech. "Oh that is why he is the GOAT, he is still harboring bitterness, what a competitor"

Yeah also maybe he is you know.. Just an Asshole.

Tim speech was thoughtful and classy and the way he flipped it to Pop at the end was a perfect tribute to a great coach by a great player.

TD made anything possible for the Spurs. There were some very good SAS teams in the late Seventies and Early Eighties (when I became a Spurs fan). Once again in the late Eighties to Mid-Nineties with David.

I'm forever grateful for Tim being the player and the person who exceeded the lofty expectations people had for him when he came to San Antonio.

It's seems like a lot longer than five years since he played. Bravo TD!

The highlight for us Spurs fans this season by far. Great to see Admiral, Manu, Tony and Pop all there to support the Greatest Power Forward of All Time. Congratulations to Timmy! Miss those guys but good to see them happy as they are all such great human beings, even Tony! Manu, you’re up next for the HOF!

My favourite TD story is the one told by Ethan Thomas, who was getting advice from Timmy while playing against him :lol

The 2nd one is Pop meeting with Tim in St Croix and talking to him while he was playing video games. Pop thought Tim wasn’t paying attention but he was :lol

Awesome matchup between Duncan and Garnett when both were at their peaks:

Also, call me crazy but I thought Tim's HOF speech > David's HOF speech.

Sure, David is technically a better speaker, and Tim's speech was full of "um" and "uh" pauses, but the content of his speech was better. He just told his story, nothing more nothing less, and it was authentic as fuck. And it was actually one of the longer speeches too!

Yeah, some of the speeches came off as really robotic...especially Vanessa's. Don't get me wrong, she is a warrior for even being able to get up and speak on Kobe's behalf after his death, but it felt like she was reading from the teleprompter the whole time.

Tim's was 100% Tim. Nervous, but gracious and simply great. He even threw in some jokes and pulled a couple of laughs out of the audience.

I'll take that 10 out of 10 times over someone who you can tell has prepared and recited their speech 1000 times just to make sure it is "perfect".

I don't remember that 2nd story, but I do remember reading about Tim watching a football game while Dave Odom was making his recruiting pitch and him thinking Tim was tuning him out.

Complete and powerful, yet still humble and understated. Just like his NBA career. It's almost comical looking at a speech like his, so full of humility, dignity and respect for others, and then look at Jordan's speech from a few years ago.

Timmy is the true GOAT.

Tim’s speech was what the speech should be, in that it is basically a thank you for all of the people that helped him make it onto that stage. Jordan’s speech was basically a giant “fuck you” to everybody he didn’t like or that dared tell him “he wasn’t good enough”

His supporters in the media all applauded him for it, but it was a disastrously awful speech in retrospect.

Surprised Pop didn't sit him in the last few seconds of his speech.
