ugly black uniform?

DALLAS, Nov. 5 (Ticker) -- On a night they welcomed back Michael Finley, the Dallas Mavericks got something special from one of the players being relied on to fill his shoes.

Reserve Devin Harris scored 20 of his career-high 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Mavericks pulled away from the San Antonio Spurs for a 103-84 victory in Finley's first game back in Dallas since signing with the Spurs this offseason.

NBA TV highlights from
Spurs-Mavericks: Play
Finley averaged at least 20 points five times in eight-plus seasons with the Mavericks before being waived this summer in a cost-cutting move. The long-time face of the franchise was greeted with a standing ovation upon entering the game midway through the first quarter but was limited to just two points on 1-of-6 shooting.

"It was good to hear the fans cheer for me, even though tonight I was wearing a different jersey," Finley said. "It just goes to show that my hard work in the eight years I was here paid off to a certain extent."

Finley and All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki made a formidable scoring tandem for Dallas for five years.

"It was weird seeing him out there in that ugly black uniform," Nowitzki said. "The first time is the emotional one. After that, you see him more and more in that uniform and you kind of get used to it."

Nowitzki, who scored 34 points, gave Dallas the lead for good late in the first half and teamed with Harris to spark the Mavericks down the stretch.

"They always play me with a smaller player," Nowitzki said. "I was able to get away a little bit tonight and rise up for my jump shot."

Nowitzki used that jumper to score five points late in the third and Harris took over from there, scoring 12 points in the critical 23-3 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters.

"We wanted to get some easy buckets in transition," Harris said. "We tried to push it in transition and I got some easy layups early in the fourth quarter, and I continued to get good looks at the basket."

After Brent Barry's basket got San Antonio within 62-60 in the third quarter, Dallas forward Keith Van Horn had a dunk to start the surge.

Harris scored the first three points of the fourth and later had three straight layups in less than a minute. A second-year guard whose playing time was reduced last season, Harris shot 8-of-8 and made one 3-pointer.

"They were switching on the pick-and-roll so we always had the option to penetrate on their big guys," he said.

"(Harris) was awesome," Nowitzki said. "We want him to be aggressive out there, especially when they switch a lot of big guys off the dribble. He used his size and athleticism in a great way."

Josh Howard chipped in 17 points, 12 rebounds and four steals for the Mavericks, who have won seven straight home openers.

"They both had great games," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of Harris and Howard. "Josh killed us on the boards. You've got to give them credit."

Tony Parker paced the Spurs with 24 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter. Tim Duncan added 18, but just one in the final period, when San Antonio was outscored, 32-20.

Every version of the Mavericks uniform have been shocking since they changed in them in 2001. I realise he is just talking about the Silver and Black image, and not the uniform itself, but I thought I'd point that out :lol

Tony Parker paced the Spurs with 24 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter.

I can't even remember if Tony played in the 4th against Cleveland, but in the 2 other games Tony has had 14 and 13 points in the 4th respectively. Kinda the exact opposite of last season where he used to score a lot in the 4th.

I would expect the Mavs to at least win a series vs. the Spurs for it to be considered a rivalry. Of course, I am talking about recent Mavs and Spurs teams.

not if I don't believe it. Blue and Silver is fine but blue and green? who designed your uni's...Helen Keller?

Blue and green doesn't equate to championships....trust us.

Well, obviously Dirk had some emotion after winning and probably just gave San Antonio something to remind themselves of which won't be good. I just hope Dallas learns how to accomplish the other half of winning. That would be a ring, and acting like winners with what you say and do. Dallas should know it's early in the year, and San Antonio has been playing with the lineup to see what's what.

In no way is this win a big one for Dallas, it's just a building block for the next day. Winning is always the goal, but it was more important to Dallas than to Pop obviously.

And also, the Mavs uni's are pretty decent in my opinion. They are not ugly, but are not clean either.

Calling the Spurs uni's is just ignorant. The Silver & Black has been historically the trademark for the Spurs as well as the lone Spur. It's simply tradition. Winning tradition. Just like the Celtics uni's, you cannot fool with perfection. And not even to speak of integrity.... because how many teams change looks to accomodate what's "cool" and "hot" in the public eye? That doesn't help your respect level already having a lesser history than us. Marketing, whatever. Don't diss the Silver and Black.

Who cares anyway? Our history is built on our traditional unis - which have a very classic, unmistable look.

BTW, 3 titles look much better than none.

Maybe, but that shitty-looking, forest green used for those alternative,
"throw-back" jerseys looks like the same pea soup puke used in the movie the Exorcist. Can't you guys make up your mind?
