CARY, Illinois (AP) -- A 10-year-old boy was in critical condition Sunday after three pit bulls escaped from a home and went on a rampage, attacking six people before police shot and killed dogs, authorities said.

No charges had been filed Sunday, but McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren said it was being investigated as a crime scene.

Neighbors said the attacks started late Saturday afternoon when children going door-to-door for a fund-raiser arrived at the home of Scott Sword, 41, who owned the dogs.

"We had music playing, and I heard this bizarre sound," said Debby Rivera, who lives three houses away. "I looked out the window, and I saw a young boy. The dogs were just jumping on him."

"The screams were horrible," she said. The dogs were "relentless, like they were possessed."

The pit bulls attacked the two children, and when the dogs' owner tried to stop them, the dogs turned on him and bit off his thumb, Nygren said. The boy's father also tried to protect his son and was attacked. The dogs went after another neighbor as well.

"The scene sprawled over a couple blocks; it was a very chaotic scene," said Lt. Michael Douglas of the Cary Fire Protection District.

Residents threw rocks at the dogs and honked car horns to try to distract them from attacking before police arrived and shot the animals.

Jim Malone said he and a neighbor tried to beat the dogs back with baseball bats. "He'd hit them, they'd run, and they'd come back," Malone said. "This went on for 15 minutes."

The boy who was attacked, Nick Foley, was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday. His friend Jordan Lamarre, also 10, was in serious condition. Nick's father was listed in good condition. Sword and two others were treated for injuries and released.

Whatever, I have a pit bull that loves everybody. He's good with other animals (and I have two cats), and EVEN children. Anyway, it's not the dog's fault, it's the stupid owners who don't have a clue on how to raise a dog.

Perhaps - but the fact remains that some pit bulls are still attacking people pretty savagely. How many different breeds of dog make the news becaose of it? Some, yeah, but not near the frequency of pit bulls.

Pit bulls have been bred for fighting for hundreds of years. It's in their make-up. I think your dog is more the exception than the rule.

It makes better news (than say poodles). Either, there are statistics that show there are more bites and attacks from other dogs (not pitbulls). I can't seem to remember where I found the stats (I'm searching), but show German Shephards at the top.

See if they show the severity of the attacks, too.

Or ask the owner that got his thumb bitten off. I would accept that existing pit's in Bexar County if neutered and electronically tagged could get a permit. But would ban any breeding or sales of new pit's.

Also every single time an LEO has to shoot a pit bull the owner ALWAYS says It was harmless pet.

Three pit bulls savagely attacked a 10-year-old boy who was riding a bicycle his parents had just given him for doing well in school.

The dogs ripped off both the boy's ears and left bite wounds all over his face, arms and upper body, police said Tuesday.

Shawn Jones was in critical condition at Children's Hospital in Oakland after 31/2 hours of surgery following the Monday night attack in nearby Richmond.

Both his ears were completely severed and he lost nearly all the skin and muscles on both sides of his face, according to Dr. James Betts who added the boy would be hospitalized for at least a month. It took about four hours just to clean the wounds, Betts said.

Shawn was riding a bicycle he had just been given by his mother, Alisa Frost, and his stepfather when the dogs pounced at about 7:30 p.m. They knocked him off the bike and repeatedly bit him.

Police Sgt. Enos Johnson said Benjamin Moore, 27, and Jacinda Lynn Knight, 33, both of Richmond, were arrested on suspicion of keeping dogs that cause injury or mayhem. The couple, which owned the dogs, was being held Tuesday on $115,000 bail.

Moore told police he abandoned two of the dogs in Oakland and one in Richmond after the attack, but authorities believe the dogs, two males and one female, are hidden.

If the dogs are not found in the next day or so, doctors will begin treating the boy for rabies.

Belinda Arnett, the boy's aunt, described Shawn as a quiet boy who likes to write poetry and attend church.

The family believes Shawn was attacked because Moore wanted his bike.

"I would like to know why a 27-year-old man would take a bike from a child and then set three dogs on him," Arnett asked.

But police said they ruled out robbery as a motive and believe the attack was random because the bike was found at the scene.

Pit bulls are awesome. If you raise them properly, they are incredibly loving. Some people just aren't equipped to handle pits.

The reason you see every attack in the news is the same reason every major airplane crash is in the news, but not every car wreck.

There are far more car wrecks, but a plane crash is "sexier news" and usually has more severe consequences even though they happen rarely.

That's not true. Pit bull attacks get noticed because they have lock. No one cares if someone get's nipped on the heel. Pits draw blood and hold the victim. And like I said EVERY single one of these common attacks the owner says it's impossible because the pit was the perfect pet. My point is that it's a danger to humans, children and elderly in particular.

You win! BAN 'EM. And take my dog and kill him!!!

Hey I think a compromise would be best that allows fixed pit's to stay with owner. Via a permit. The ban would be for selling pup's and or breeding.
