"Teachers, however, are concerned about their safety, according to Florida Education Association President Fedrick Ingram.

“It’s clear in communications with our members that educators are scared. They don’t trust politicians to make sure things are safe --- rightly so, with the record-breaking number of cases being reported,” Ingram told the News Service of Florida in an email Monday. “The governor is trying to brush that off.”

Here in Miami-Dade, parents are being given the option of choosing virtual, in person or other (arrangement made with school) for EACH student. I hear that the majority of parents are choosing in person - they want the kids to go to school (I guess so they can free up their time to go to work)?

That means the US can safely reopen schools at the very high point of its pandemic.

You're really asking what the problem of opening up a school is during a pandemic?

It seems that most of the evidence points to covid not affecting kids much - what do you want - to keep them locked up for years? What about the loss of education, income for parents, etc? Most of the kids are not out now - so most likely it's not them causing the spike - it's the boneheaded young adults who are congregating and not wearing masks.

At least 1,335 people have tested positive from child care facilities in Texas, the state's Department of Health and Human Services reported Monday, citing figures from Friday.

Of those infected, 894 were staff members and 441 were children. The cases came from 883 child care facilities that are open in the state, DHHS said.

The new cases mark a significant increase from June 15, when there were 210 reported cases from 177 facilities -- including 141 staff members and 69 children.

On May 15, Texas reported a total of 59 cases from 53 child care facilities. At that time, 36 staff members and 23 children were infected.

This is THE all-important poll/survey - on the parent portal choosing delivery method for each student. Certainly the county will have final authority over the school board when end of August comes but that's a long time from now.

Policy makers must also consider the mounting evidence regarding COVID-19 in children and adolescents, including the role they may play in transmission of the infection. SARS-CoV-2 appears to behave differently in children and adolescents than other common respiratory viruses, such as influenza, on which much of the current guidance regarding school closures is based. Although children and adolescents play a major role in amplifying influenza outbreaks, to date, this does not appear to be the case with SARS-CoV-2. Although many questions remain, the preponderance of evidence indicates that children and adolescents are less likely to be symptomatic and less likely to have severe disease resulting from SARS-CoV-2 infection. In addition, children may be less likely to become infected and to spread infection. Policies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 within schools must be balanced with the known harms to children, adolescents, families, and the community by keeping children at home.

It is critically important to develop strategies that can be revised and adapted depending on the level of viral transmission in the school and throughout the community and done with close communication with state and/or local public health authorities and recognizing the differences between school districts, including urban, suburban, and rural districts.

2 points:
1. The AAP's position has no bearing on the view that parents should ultimately decide when to open schools, which is what I called out
2. Read the AAP's position thoroughly. They say that policy considerations should start with the goal of students being physically present as soon as it makes sense. Nobody disputes that goal. The debate is about the "as soon as it makes sense" bit - and it is up for epidemiologists and infectious disease experts to determine that, not the AAP

One more tip for some silly ppl here.

I'm not even saying any kids or their families would die if we open schools. But it would just be an administrative clusterfuck. If we are breaking infection records you can bet your ass there will be school infections on a weekly basis.

School staff, principals and admins would spend 110% of their time chasing families and notifying families. Because they would have to.

And guess what, if theres 1 infection in a given school, you can bet your ass most if not all parents at that school will freak and the school would be paralized for weeeks. Multiply that over and over

School systems need to be ready for this. And make the call and stick to it. No, they are not ready for this if the state is still breaking records and positivity is in double digits :lol

"Although children and adolescents play a major role in amplifying influenza outbreaks, to date, this does not appear to be the case with SARS-CoV-2. Although many questions remain, the preponderance of evidence indicates that children and adolescents are less likely to be symptomatic and less likely to have severe disease resulting from SARS-CoV-2 infection. In addition, children may be less likely to become infected and to spread infection."

Adults infected both the other adults and the kids. Kids aren't infecting the adults or the other kids. Prove me wrong.

We do not know this answer yet.
It also depends on what age groups we look at.
Two years and younger clearly appears to be rare, but to say it does not happen at this point is stupidity.
Realize NO ONE can actually see the virus go from one person to another and then causing symptoms. It all has to be reasoned through contact studies, which are getting very difficult right now because so many people have this thing. In fact we may have to give up on this all together, it would have been very effective if we had contained this early on.

You are wrong.

Only one of these is a clinical study: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2006100

RESULTSAs of April 4, a total of 1221 of 9199 persons (13.3%) who were recruited for targeted testing had positive results for infection with SARS-CoV-2. Of those tested in the general population, 87 (0.8%) in the open-invitation screening and 13 (0.6%) in the random-population screening tested positive for the virus. In total, 6% of the population was screened. Most persons in the targeted-testing group who received positive tests early in the study had recently traveled internationally, in contrast to those who tested positive later in the study. Children under 10 years of age were less likely to receive a positive result than were persons 10 years of age or older, with percentages of 6.7% and 13.7%, respectively, for targeted testing; in the population screening, no child under 10 years of age had a positive result, as compared with 0.8% of those 10 years of age or older. Fewer females than males received positive results both in targeted testing (11.0% vs. 16.7%) and in population screening (0.6% vs. 0.9%). The haplotypes of the sequenced SARS-CoV-2 viruses were diverse and changed over time. The percentage of infected participants that was determined through population screening remained stable for the 20-day duration of screening.
CONCLUSIONSIn a population-based study in Iceland, children under 10 years of age and females had a lower incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection than adolescents or adults and males. The proportion of infected persons identified through population screening did not change substantially during the screening period, which was consistent with a beneficial effect of containment efforts. Children under 10 are less likely to get infected than adults and if they get infected, they are less likely to get seriously ill. What is interesting is that even if children do get infected, they are less likely to transmit the disease to others than adults. We have not found a single instance of a child infecting parents.

I discussed schools being reopened long before Trump. There’s far too much harm to children from being shut out of school and missing out on education and social interaction, along with abuse at home, over doses, and suicides to continue keeping them at home when nothing has been shown they are at serious risk of death or spreading the virus.

If I were older and in the at risk category I’d be saying the same thing, get the kids back to school I’ll take the risk of dying from the virus.

I would actually advance this has little to do with the kids, and more in line with people being unable to go back to work when they have kids at home that they can't leave alone. And thus, making much more complicated to have a quick economic recovery.

But this opens up a different can of worms, which has to do with the US' generally cutthroat work schedule, salaries being stagnated for a long time, and the current economic woes.

Large studies from Iceland, the Netherlands and Spain and an Italian municipal study showed markedly lower SARS-CoV-2 prevalence amongst children and young people, however studies from Stockholm, England and municipalities in Switzerland and Germany showed showed no difference in infection prevalence between adults and children. Conclusions There is preliminary evidence that children and young people have lower susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2, with a 56% lower odds of being an infected contact. There is weak evidence that children and young people play a lesser role in transmission of SARS-CoV-2 at a population level.

The importance of in-person learning is well-documented, and there is already evidence of the negative impacts on children because of school closures in the spring of 2020. Lengthy time away from school and associated interruption of supportive services often results in social isolation, making it difficult for schools to identify and address important learning deficits as well as child and adolescent physical or sexual abuse, substance use, depression, and suicidal ideation. This, in turn, places children and adolescents at considerable risk of morbidity and, in some cases, mortality. Beyond the educational impact and social impact of school closures, there has been substantial impact on food security and physical activity for children and families.

The concept of a single bread-winner and a stay at home parent has never really been there in the low socioeconomic classes, but it has also been slipping further and further away from the middle class too.

Yah, we've gotten to a point where a large number of parents are reliant on schools for daycare and food for their kids

According to the TEA, parents can choose remote learning for their children at any point in the 2020-21 school year. Parents who choose remote learning may be asked to commit to remote instruction for a full grading period (6 or 9 weeks), but will not have to commit more than two weeks in advance, allowing a decision to be made off the latest public health information......"

These discussions are worth having. We should continuously weigh the costs and benefits of shutting down vs. opening up, and approach those reopenings and shutdowns on a case-by-case basis. Just because it makes sense to open up a school, doesn't mean it makes sense to open up bars, restaurants, and indoor dining.

That said, we FUCKED OURSELVES here early on. We should've went with a hard nationwide lock-down in March of all but essential businesses. Europe did just that, and have flattened like no one's business. Example. The horror story that was Italy is at 13 deaths/7 day average at day 126. We are at 511 and just had the highest daily death count we've had in nearly a month.

And I solely blame fucks in that "Team Reality" contingent (Ginn, Berenson, Levitt, Ethical Skeptic, etc). The misinformation they've been spinning has been near criminal. The virus doesn't have a natural fuckin' bell curve progression. See Iran's double hump.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/iran/

That's not a second wave, either. They got overconfident during the period where they cut their death toll down and are now seeing the results of it.

https://www.bbc.com/news/52959756

The lockdowns have not contributed to more "deaths" than the virus, as those idiots kept claiming it would.

https://i.imgur.com/xN3TmZu.png

That whole bunch of gray is the excess deaths attributed to Covid. The beige is excess deaths not attributed to Covid, Flu, or Pneumonia. If "the cure was worse than the disease," we see much more non-Covid deaths than Covid deaths. And yes, I know the "cure is worse than the disease" logic is looking at the long term ramifications of lockdowns, but IF we locked down hard in March, we would've flattened the spread as Europe has while also mitigating the long term effects of long shutdowns. This is a concept "Team Reality" led by that fuck Berenson didn't and still don't understand.

All reports are the FL, TX, AZ ICUs are filling up rapidly. I'm sure Team Reality will spin a few graphs for us, but word from the frontlines of the healthcare workers say they are strained. And the once lax politicians of those states are basically in panic, with Abbott throwing local leaders under the bus for supposedly doing "nothing." DeSantis extending the state of emergency of Florida. And AZ just being a clusterfuck all around. California is also not trending positively. Our positive rate is only 8 percent on new tests (vs. 33% in AZ, which is terribad), but can't overlook exponential growth.

That doesn't dispute what you quoted/responded to. We know that in an ideal world, it's preferable that kids attend school (something I wholeheartedly agree with, BTW, as I pointed out to rmt numerous times how her homeschooling deprived the kids of a number of items listed there).

But unfortunately, we're in a world in crisis right now. I think this should be approached at the local level, like we do with the economy. Places where the situation is more or less under control, should re-open. Places where infections are rampant, should probably tone it down until they bring them under control.

Both links address kids needing to get back to school while there is a pandemic without any mention of getting the economy going quickly.

I didn't follow the links, I responded to the quotes you highlighted.

The first one says zero about the pandemic, other than kids stopped going to school in spring 2020. Otherwise, I very much agree with that quote.

The second one warns of the potential consequences of delaying a return to school, which I also agree with. But we're not delaying for shits and giggles, we're delaying because we're in a pandemic.

As I already said, I think this needs to be handled locally, much like reopening of the economy is being handled. Makes no sense to keep the kids away from school in Montana because Texas is a dumpster fire right now.

Now, the part I mentioned about the economy, has more to do with what politicos want, not what's best for the children (and I can tell now that it probably wasn't clear, but I was addressing the thread title/topic).

The fact that a good number of parents can't go back to work or have to figure out things like daycare is a real problem, with tangible effects on the economy.

Nope. I just gave a fact. Cdc never recommended all.schools close.

Meh. Fuck masks. Either give it 100% or not at all.

Besides, distance learning is better anyway. Works with more peoples' schedules, no more commuting, buses, no more kids getting bullied at school for not dressing like the other kids, and you're spotting kids an extra 30+ minutes of sleep by having online education. Plus, less operating expenses (A/C, cafeteria labor, etc).

Online education is a win-win for everyone involved.

How come some old fucks just don't get the point?!

So, why then do you feel like no one npt at risk of death, over 90 percent of the population not live their lives until diseases are eradicated? Or do you only care about covid? Because there are many other things many times more risk than covid, but I don't see you posting.

Yeah cooking a burger or steak on cast iron is amazing but the cleanup is fucking dreadful. I almost prefer a cast iron steak over putting it on the grill because of how good I’ve gotten at cooking it in cast iron.

Just pan-sear it in a regular, non-stick pan with a little canola oil or butter. It's just as good as anything except maybe the grill, but you're not eating benzopyrene with pan-seared. Win-win

Do yuse guys use the chain-mail scrubber to clean your cast iron? I've been using it to clean my cast-iron and wok for the last few years...makes it super easy.

Quite frankly if I just cleaned right after I ate it wouldn’t be a big deal but I’m usually lazy wait until the morning after :lol

Trump wants to reopen schools. Hint: It's not just about education.
Trump has ramped up a push to return children to the classroom as he tries to restore the economy for his reelection campaign.

President Donald Trump’s push to reopen America’s schools is about more than children’s education. It’s about the economy. And it’s about his reelection.

Because for Trump and his team, the issues are interlinked.

With children out of the house, they argue, parents can more easily return to work and juice the economy — something even the president’s allies consider a necessity for Trump to win reelection. And with Trump’s sagging poll numbers against presumptive 2020 rival Joe Biden, aides also hope the campaign for in-person schooling will play well with the female and suburban voters the president needs to remain in office.

But the push is also driving a furious response from teachers unions, parents and others in the education world who say they need more funding to reopen safely and that Trump’s political priorities will put children and educators in harm’s way.

...

“President Trump understands education is the single greatest equalizer in our society and that we need to get children back into the classroom so they do not fall behind and parents can return to work,” Trump campaign spokeswoman Samantha Zager said.

Some allies also hope the campaign to reopen schools can help Trump win over some independent voters.

“Trump is pushing to reopen schools because it’s a major issue for working families,” said Dan Eberhart, a major Republican donor and CEO of the drilling services company Canary LLC. “It goes to his economy focus. Working parents, regardless of political affiliation, cannot afford to be home schooling, they have to go to work or lose their job. It’s a wedge issue that hits swing voters
