View Full Version : Good example of B.R. attitude about Saints

Here is an article from the Shreveport Times by a long time BR columnist. Pretty much sums up the attitude that people have in BR right now about the Saints and Benson.

I don't necessarily agree with everything he says (I am from N.O.) nor does everyone in BR but this pretty much sums it up for a lot of them. Not really going to help attendance in BR much. It's all LSU in Baton Rouge.

Benson, Saints have dangerous side effects for LSU (http://shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051107/SPORTS0402/511070304/1036/SPORTS0202)

Thank you for thinking we care about what Baton Rouge thinks about the Saints or New Orleans.

But is BR prepared to put up with this for another year if the Saints move back to play their games there till the Superdome is ready? It doesn't seem like this is getting any better and i imagine its going to get even worse yet before it gets better. Just a sad case for everyone and especially the players being bounced around like they are.

Well there was much discussion on this board about the attendance in B.R. and I thought this was a reasonably good article about one of the reasons attendance was 30,000.

Sorry to cause you such inconvenience...sleep tight.

I don't know if BR is prepared or not. Unless something changes with Benson I don't see them supporting the Saints. Oh and the fact that well...the Saints aren't very good. I think the people in BR would just rather spend their money on traveling to LSU games than the Saints.

How much of this has to do with people wanting to cheer on the #6 team in the country, just a couple of years removed from a national title, on a hurricane-shortened budget, over a sad sack Saints team who's owner openly despises Baton Rouge?

Oh just about 100% of it. If LSU beats Bama this weekend they will most likely be going to ATL for the SEC championship. They are already going to a bowl so many LSU fans are going to be saving and spending their money to follow LSU.

The Saints and LSU have always been in competition for football fan dollars. Now they are in a position where they need to work together and they are bumping heads for sure.

I think Benson is jealous of the crowds LSU draws. Although if he could just put a decent team on the field he would most certainly get the same type of support year after year.

In their first 20 years, NO had zero playoff appearances. Benson buys them in 85, they make the playoffs for four years out of six, starting in 87, and the end of that streak had much more to do with the death of Jim Finks than anything Tom Benson did, or didn't do. Hell, they've made the post season as recently at 2000. Not recent enough for you? Tough. There are 20 teams that don't make the post season every year. I'm sure all of THEIR fans don't bail on the team. I really think New Orleans hates the Saints, and only wants them around to kick like an old dog, and to complain about.

People, I'm born and raised in Baton Rouge. People don't care for the Saints 1/10th of what they care for LSU.

Baton Rouge is not the answer, and the Superdome will not be ready.

It's SA OR LA

The original Man in Black.

I hear the train a comin'; it's rollin' 'round the bend,
And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when.
I'm stuck at Folsom Prison and time keeps draggin' on.
But that train keeps rollin' on down to San Antone.

When I was just a baby, my mama told me, "Son,
Always be a good boy; don't ever play with guns."
But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.
When I hear that whistle blowin' I hang my head and cry.

I bet there's rich folk eatin' in a fancy dining car.
They're prob'ly drinkin' coffee and smokin' big cigars,
But I know I had it comin', I know I can't be free,
But those people keep a movin', and that's what tortures me.

Well, if they freed me from this prison, if that railroad train was mine,
I bet I'd move on over a little farther down the line,
Far from Folsom Prison, that's where I want to stay,
And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away

Can you imagine how bads its going to get the longer the Saints play there and it starts to take its toll on their field?? Then the Saints will really feel the frustration from LSU not wanting them. I understand they all hate Benson, but the players are only out there to play and win football games, not feel any more guilt then they already are feeling. Granted, no they haven't won many, LOL, but all this animosity sure isn't helping them either.

I come here from another message board because I want to see for myself what it is like. Before I get flamed here let me tell you a few things. Like my name here describes the truth. I had ancestors fight and, of course, die at the Battle of the Alamo. I also had family members that were a part of lthe original Texas Rangers. And since I know there will be a wise one in ever crowd I don't mean the baseball team. I am a fan of the New Orleans Saints. Have been since 1972. I thank your city for giving them a place to stay after the hurricane came through. If it stopped there, there would have been no problem. But Benson tried to move them and we got pissed. Then your mayor in SA publically recruited them while dead bodies were still floating in the streets. All crap aside, does ANYONE see anything wrong with that? Or is it just us over here in Louisiana? I am glad you are Saints fans. Lord knows we need all the fans we can get. Saints fans, particuarlly Louisiana fans, are a strange breed. Ask yourselfs htis and be honest ok. We have supported them for 38 years of losing. Would SA? Would you sell out 36 games in a row to a 500 team at best? Do I think SA deserves a team? Who am I to say ? But would SA like to have a team? I believe the answer is yes. Football is a way of life in Texas. Same in Louisiana. Would you pay for ads for the Saints? Tempers are high here but what would you do if someone took in your Spurs after a disaster in SA and then tried to keep them. But the Spurs have won championships and the Saints have won ! playoff game. Please keep this in mind while you are bashing us at SaintsReport.com . And one more thing. Yes it is a private web site. But the mods there keep the forums civil. We strive for a higher level. Unforuantly the some can't be said for here. But this is your board and how this is run is up to the mods here. THANK GOD FOR AMERICA WHERE DIFFERENCE OF OPINION IS ALLOWED. That is all. Thank you for supporting the Saints. :king

I really dont think the bashing of the Saintsreport is neccessary. There are actually 12 year old children that are football fans and I could see them going to messages boards to keep up with thier favorite team. I am a regular poster on Saintsreport, and for what its worth Loose cannon has been banned from other there in the past as well. They are very strict about thier Terms of Service. Your banning (or whoever's banning) had nothing to do with your views as we oftewn have varied opinions expressed over there, and mine are not always popular. I also dont think any bashing of Spurstalk over there is neccessary.

I must agree with Loose cannon on one thing though, the gentleman poster that came to Saintsreport and posted about his Saints2006 website, did not represent what really happened on Saintsreport at all.

No one on our board made any racists comments, and if an Individual emailed him (as I understand thats what the story is now) who was from our board, that was done by the individual and Saintsreport should not share in the blame for that.

About the topic now:

The cheap seats if you will at the Saints games are very very few in Numbers. The bears attendence was expected to be low by Area Saints Fans, I think it is a bad barometer of local Support, The next two BR games are Division games, turn out should be a little better.

You cannot compare LSU attendence to Saints attendence, they are different beasts.

I honestly feel that New Orleans NEEDS the Saints as a business to help with thier recovery. A lot of revenue is made off of the Saints and moving them now when the City needs help is in my honest opinion in poor taste.

I don't have the link, but Tag did offer that up during the meeting in BR. They are supposed to help fix LSU right after the season and again during the season next year. It's not really for LSU. It's part of the $$$$ he offered up to help keep the Saints in LA.

As for the comment that the MODs at SR keeping things civil and allowing for diverse posting.......LMFAO!!! What a joke.

LSU may be getting Field turf for next season which will mean the wear is not as much of an issue. Money that the Saints are paying for use of the field has been earmarked to help pay for this, So its money they are being paid, the NFL is not paying directly.

SR.com has stringent Terms of Service. Have you read them? Thats what will get you banned.

They have been very very tight recently for several reasons.

Please keep in mind that many SR.com posters lost thier homes and all they own during the hurricane as well as some members lost family members.

There had been a rash of random people signing up and saying things like Fuck your city, you deserved to be hit with a hurricane because your city was so sinful. The Team is suffering not the people of New Orleans.

Just like here at Spurstalk where most of you guys live in and around the San Antonio area, Most of the Saintsreport posters are from in and around the New Orleans area.

There was a lot of things from new people that were posted and in really bad taste, during a very hard time for those of us affected directly by Katrina.

New Posters (especially people from San Antonio) were not taking such things in consideration.

When a SR.comer expressed that we felt the Mayor of San Antonio was trying to steal out Team after we had been affected so greatly, often the new posters took that as a personal attack and things got out of hand from there.

Because of that a lower tolerance level was reached.

I know it is hard to understand whats going in New Orleans right now but if you got unneccessarily banned I apologise, But I as a poster have nothing to do with that.

Please show the same class your city showed when you welcomed our evacuees when discussing the city moving to San Antonio.

It is a very sensative issue to many people, and some it is all they have left of thier PreKatrina New Orleans.

But it is not nesseccary to bad mouth all SR.com posters or boycott all things Saints, try to have a little understanding with passionate fans some who lost everything they own, now feeling like they are going to lose thier team.

Oh I recall a real winner thread over there about boycotting all things San Antonio when coming over for games. "Stay in hotels in Austin." "Don't buy gas there." "Eat somewhere else." Was that because Hardberger was talking to Benson? Or because the people on SR.com were being really, really petty?

No it was the mayor and your press that we specifically lashed out at.

Are you familiar with the "Baton rouge will be a disaster" comments the mayor made?

Any bashing of the city or its people was silly and unneccessary, and from what I have seen just leads to a pissing contest trashing each others cities, incredably unproductibe, and at the end ofg teh day both sides feel like they got the better of the other and neither side really did.

That was silly and petty, I am not going to try to excuse those that felt that way at the time.

I will say many of them were still living in Hotel rooms hours from home seperated from thier families, it was a tough time.

But I will tell you that is not the general concensus of the City, There is anomosity specifically to your mayor and to your press, if you came to SR.com and defended the mayor or press that anomosity was turned to you.

I dont know how else I could break it down.

I was explaining, not justifying.

Also it was not the overall sentiment of the posters at SR.com

Most posters have no problem with San Antonio or the people of your city.

The exchanges I did see usually started because someone from SA tried to defend the mayor.

I am not saying anyone started it or anything was justified, but I am saying These people were already emotional wrecks some still have not heard from Family members, they were venting about The Mayor and the press, someone from san Antonio defended them (along with some people making some flat out inflammatory comments)

What did you think would happen....

If i see a bee's hive swarming I certainly would not go nudge at it.

The defense of the Mayor and the press was the nudge some needed to go off on the SA posters, some of it was uncalled for and out of line, but running back here and badmouthing all of SR.com, all Saints fans from Louisana the like is unneccessary.

I have been more than civil, I am trying to explain our position, and I have said there was no justificatoin for attacking anyone simply for being from SA.

can I at least have that acknowlegded?
