Can someone explain how for example the NBA playing on a court donning the words "Black Lives Matter" is completely separate from the group which coined the slogan.

Right but quite sly on their part to keep moving the discussion

First it was just a human rights issue. Now it's just a movement. But there has always been BLM, fully open and unapologetic bout it's agenda.

There’s confusion not just because some guy in California registered “Black Lives Matter” first, but because some, perhaps many people who support the BLM cause as a movement, don’t know much and may not necessarily agree with the mission of the actual “Black Lives Matter Global Network” organization, which many have come to find out was co-founded by three Marxist taught female organizers.

1. The Black Lives Matter Foundation was registered some time in 2015 by a black guy in Santa Clara, California who has allegedly claimed he wanted to use the foundation to bring the community and the police together. He began to get donations from GoFundMe in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The State of California had at one point frozen the monies. And they’ve also investigated him for not filing annual financial reports. There has not been any significant activities towards his stated mission to unify the community and the police. And even more odd is that Santa Clara doesn’t even have a police department. But he registered the name first. Seems like he’s more or less taking advantage of confusion by people donating to what they believe is the following organization.

2. The Black Lives Matter Global Network is the organization that has Marxist roots and is more aggressively and proactively waging the movement against the police because of related cases of police brutality. They filed I believe in 2017, so the Santa Clara dude has a point at least in terms of the ownership and usage of “Black Lives Matter.” There are some even in the African American community that do not align with the organization even if they agree with the premise of the cause.

3. #BlackLivesMatter is the movement about the social injustices black people, particularly black men, face with respect to law enforcement and the criminal justice system. It started in 2014 as a hashtag after the Trayvon Martin killing. It’s my opinion that many people who support the #BLM movement are supporting this specifically, sharing their voices to a cause that is trying to make aware social and racial inequalities at the hands of the law enforcement and justice systems. But I don’t believe all supporters necessarily automatically support the BLMGN organization and their views and mission. And I imagine that even others don’t even know the distinction.

#2 and #3 are not and should not be synonymous or interchangeable. #1 in general is irrelevant to the discussion of what people are getting confused about.
