View Full Version : Let's imagine old Joe doesn't make it to November...

Say, he has a stroke on-air trying to remember the last word he said, mid-late October, past any delegate votes...

Take your best guess what happens next?

I honestly don't know what legally happens next. If I had to guess without looking it up, Biden stays on the ballot and the VP candidate becomes President if Biden is elected?

i would imagine the delegates would be freed to select a new nominee in some emergency convention type thing

there would probably be an expectation that they would go with the VP choice, as part of voting for a presidential primary candidate is choosing their judgment for VP selection with the notion that VP will be 2nd in line

And who do you think the pool of candidates for that would be? I can actually see some nasty infighting with Bernie Bros.

edited my post a bit to speculate on how that would go.

there may be an expectation that delegates previously pledged to candidates would stay loyal, but all of those who went to biden would most likely flock to whoever his VP choice was, provided that person had previously registered as a candidate for the presidency. honestly im not sure what the expectations would be

It's actually sorta even criminal we don't have a VP pick yet... were this to happen now, it would be extremely contentious (not that it wouldn't be otherwise, but at least the VP path is justifiable).

I thought about that one too, but that's just giving Trump ammo and basically forfeiting the election. Might as well move on with a dead candidate at the top of the ticket.

This year especially shows there should be an age limit for presidential candidates. Nobody over 65. If you win and turn 65 before your first term is over, you cannot run for a second term.

Honestly nobody over 60 should even be running, but we’ll throw old assholes a bone and set it at 65.

65 is too arbitrary. Some people are vital into their 80's. Dr. Fauchi is a good example.

imagine we actually were on top of things, had widespread rapid testing in hotspots early on, with contact tracing, and actually did have it under control by easter, preventing the need for elongated shutdowns

It was always an impossible ask of Trump to just sit back and relax and let the scientists do the leg work.

Trump would have a 2nd term locked down if that were the case :lol

Unfortunately the goal of the modern day Republican Party is to destroy government and make it look as incompetent as possible in order to convince the American people that government is the problem, so we’d never get the scenario you described with a GOP president.

He basically let a hangnail turn into gangrene infection that requires arm amputation by ignoring the scientists because a short and swift shutdown back in February might have hurt his precious stock market, even though it would have been over several weeks later and we’d be almost back to normal by now :lol

Germany and SK were the really the models to mitigate early with testing and tracing combined with soft lockdowns. Denmark, Norway, and NZ were good models for harder lockdowns. We had options. But we didn't commit and/or got complacent. CA had a model response but Newsom folded.

Americans tend to rally around presidents in times of crisis. GWB managed to crack 80% approval rating just by giving a bullshit speech about how the terrorists who attacked us were jealous of our freedom. Trump couldn’t even crack a 50% approval rating because of how shittily he handled the pandemic :lol

What's scary is that during the first weeks of the press briefings his approval ratings were actually skirting the low 50s. We should be glad him along with the people around him are plain stupid.

The 3 hour long marathon briefings that followed did him in. That's why he's now doing 30 minute ones. :lol
