Demar BEASTING!!!!

I think it was the Spurs going small ball and getting Gay into PnR with Demar, and getting Bjelica switched onto him multiple times. They’re going to have to do a lot of it with Poeltl as the only big.

RC_Drunkford
07-31-2020, 09:36 PM
Imagine that line up with Aldridge. That team could've won 45-50. But he had to squeeze his son in there and play him 28 minutes per night and added Millinelli off the bench

24.1 mpg White

Disgusting to see a coach so out of touch. Bryn probably sweating right now with White and the youngsters coming alive tonight. Probably why he wanted to play so badly through his injury.

I'm sure both. This new Pop version sucks ass. He's a shitty clueless coach and a damn idiot follower (for some unknown reason) politics-wise.

Hard disagree. This game, we got the aggressive, decisive White, but is that a certainty for every single game? It wasn't the case for all of this season, neither the past one. Lonnie can bail you out of broken plays with athleticism, is doing amazing work at positioning himself off-ball (whether our guys find him is another thing entirely), and he's got very good passing instincts. The one young player who'd benefit the most coming off the bench, is Dejounte, because he'd get the touches and reps that he needs, whilst facing subpar defenses, which wouldn't be so harsh on his non-elite ballhandling and playmaking skills. The fact that Lonnie turned on the jets late today doesn't mean he always does it, especially when White was so dominant out of the gates, which explains his lack of touches. I'm expecting our young guys to rotate in their prominence throughout these 8 games.

Having said that, I also like Keldon off the bench more than I like him as a starter, for this season at least. He's a game-changer when he's on the court, and the energy he brings to the court, and the size and strength he plays with, are much better used against smaller bench defenders, which he can easily power through. With DeMar and Jakob, and DJ to an extent, all being non-shooters fixed to the SL, we really need Lonnie's off-ball positioning and corner 3's, whereas Keldon isn't as established a shooter - though I really liked his form on the few threes he took today.

Next year, I'd like to see Lonnie-Keldon at the 2-3, with my pipe dream being White at the 1 and DJ getting the reps and development he needs as the bench PG. Do the Spurs have the balls to do that when they've already commited to DJ long-term? I don't know, but games like today's make it clear that Dejounte still has a lot of work and development to do, whereas White is (should be) practically a staple for the SL.

Loose thoughts:

1. seems like only having two of these three guys: aldridge, derozen, and gay, opens up some shooting opportunities for the other guys on the team and makes us better imo.

2. its funny how pop said the focus would be on development of the young guys, and that seems like a better plan that whatever we were doing before the season got postponed.

3 i wish white's taking charge defensive plays would rub off onto some of the other players.

Is Forbes injured? The moment he gets a start over either White or Walker, this thing goes to shit. That lineup loses all that beatiful flexibility.

Where is this "phantom exchange" between Keldon and DDR?

It was on the league pass stream. Yours cuts into the commercial at 1:08 in your clip. It was precisely that moment when they sit down

DeMar had like 10 assists last night, his passing was pretty on point tbh. not sure i'm buying that

Derozan played well at the end, but Spurs wouldn't have won this without White's effort.

Rudy played 10 years younger, RBs especially!!, PTs, after a long rest. How long with that last?

Ive got no reason to lie.

You can be a ball hog and have ten assists. Assists are not an indicator that you arent a ball hog. It means you keep the ball until the last second and pass it to someone who makes it. Theres no team ball movement in that.

DDR played OK and was influential at the end.
I opine that he should be moved and players to replace him should earn what he does should be acquired and these players should defend, shoot reasonably and run and jump

Youre a great poster btw

i'm not saying you're lying, just saying you probably think he said that when he didn't, or if he did it's not in the context youre thinking tbh

Thanks! I love writing in general, and talking about the Spurs is a great outlet (especially when they play frustratingly). Nice to see it's appreciated. And hey, I wouldn't mind writing for some bucks if timvp calls on me - they say if you work off what makes you happy, it ain't work, right?

I'm still high off last night's game, tbh. I watched a few highlights of earlier games from this season afterwards, and the team is notably different, and better. The ball moves more, there's much more pronounced effort on D (Forbes not being there is a big part of this, and of course putting the effort and succeeding at it aren't the same thing), and our transition game is starting to take form, whereas earlier in the season we'd run a half-court offense almost every single possession, which made it much harder to score and usually required some form of LA/DDR iso ball, which I feel hinders the team. The young guys aren't there to just be spot-up shooters - they want to run the show! I also think a transition offensive game is especially beneficial for Dejounte, who struggles with traditional playmaking, but can make use of his athleticism and size on the open court.

If only the Spurs would cut out that lame pump-fake-drive-kickout-repeat that they've become so accustomed to doing every single play, and started shooting more from outside (Derrick has definitely made it a point of emphasis - I recall one interview earlier this season where he talked about putting in 500 3's each practice, and it's working out well), I could see the Spurs making a run for the 8th. Whether they would benefit from that long-term, is up in the air, but if we make the playoffs at the hands of the young players, I'm not against it.

Hmm, I don't know what to think... To me it looks more like a general comment, than something directly aimed at DeMar - especially since DeRozan isn't even looking at Keldon before or after the comment, so it doesn't look like it caught his attention. I'm more inclined to believe it was more of a directive towards the whole team, which is great to see. Keldon is just a rookie but exhibits many qualities that you'd expect from a vet. He can become a very special player - he's tough, plays solid D, attacks the rim, brings high energy on and off the floor, has above-average passing/playmaking skills for a player of his archetype, and his stroke from 3 looked solid last night - he made a three and had another make which was waived off due to a prior foul. Excellent pick by the FO.

Most impressive thing is he knows where to be on defense most times, especially when Pop is strict on defensive positioning and goes nuts over it. I've watched many games when Lonnie, DJ, even White looking lost on defense during their rookie years. It's like night and day. Definitely reminscent of Kawhi back then.

If you haven't seen this yet, take a look, off Friday's game. What makes Keldon such a good man-to-man defender is that he's not only smart, but also has the size and strength to stay with his man, fighting through screens and staying on his toes to prevent the opponent from blazing past him. His footwork is very impressive. I especially like that he already knows the way defense is played in the NBA - unlike DJ, who far too often reaches in whilst trying to go for a block or strip the opponent, often giving up and-1's that should have just been two points, Keldon sticks to his man and puts his hands straight up, whilst keeping his feet moving and his body between the basket and his defender as they draw closer to the basket. No gambling, no over-reacting, just straight fundamentals.

Keldon obviously doesn't have the length that Kawhi has, but apart from that there's no indicators that he can't be close to, or as good, as Kawhi is defensively. The real question mark though is what his game can evolve to offensively - if he gets more consistent from deep, he can be an extremely solid 3&D wing, but for some reason I see his ceiling being even higher. To me, he and Lonnie are most definitely the two highest ceiling players on the team right now, and the best of all is that they have great chemistry together. A starting backcourt of White, Lonnie, Keldon is future sound.
