good thing the conservatives have the largest cable news channel, dominate local news, dominate the radio, and dominate social media
Conservatives have one cable outlet compared to many on the left. It's not an advantage.

I think because they are now literally putting all their eggs into the "Joe has Dementia" basket and are trying to schedule as many debates as possible so they can hopefully show the world if he is truly not all there. Of everything that has happened under this moron's watch this is probably their last hail mary.
I think it might backfire. They're setting expectations so low with the constant "Joe has dementia and his brain is a scrambled egg...He can't even talk!" such that as long as Biden shows up to the debate and survives for two hours without shitting his pants or collapsing on stage the media narrative will be "Joe Biden fights back and shows he doesn't have dementia!"
The Dems made the same mistake in 2016. They talked nonstop shit about how "unpresidential!" Trump is, then after the 3rd debate (where Trump intentionally toned it down), the story that dominated headlines was "Trump shows he can be presidential!"
The 1st debate is a trap for Trump. Reagan, GHWB, GWB and Obama all didn't take their first reelection debate seriously and had to make up ground in the 2nd and 3rd debates. In the Axios interview Trump looked totally unprepared for a scenario where someone is going to push back and challenge what he says, he's gonna need a lot of prep to get back into 2015 Teflon Don mode.

:lol I agree, but I still think that this is literally their last go to option hoping that something really bad happens with Biden during the debates that they can hopefully take and run with.
Who said you can invite a stranger inside? You can chat outside pussy

trump complains we are showing too many cases because we are testing too many people, even mild cases of sniffles, and then pivots to use those mild cases of sniffles to show a lower case mortality rate. the number of people dying is more important than the case mortality rate. who cares if you have a virus with a 90% mortality rate if only 20 people catch it, vs one with a mortality rate of 1% but where millions are infected.
we've done an abysmal job of containment going back to march. now we're all the way into august, still having well over 1k deaths per day, and people are still bitching about fucking masks and are begging to reopen the flootgates

Iirc it was the 2nd debate where the Access Hollywood tape was the topic. By the end of the 3rd debate the topic was “but her emails” and “Trump proved he could be presidential!” Teflon Don outmanuevered Hillary in a big way in the month before the election.
One big story no one is talking about is how much worse his campaign staff is now. In 2016 Steve Bannon and to a lesser extent Roger Stone were playing chess while Hillary’s campaign was playing Connect Four. Not having Stone or Bannon is definitely hurting him this time around. Not sure how involved Conway is but he should have put the campaign back in her control awhile ago.

yes i'm upset that the president of the united states abstained and failed to lead a national effort. a national strategy would have been quite helpful to have a coordinate attempt to beat the virus, instead of having 50 different states doing things on different schedules
countries that have it contained? germany, south korea, france, italy (yes, even after their abysmal early wave), canada, denmark, norway, finland. even sweden and the uk despite their early herd immunity attempt blunders.

Evidently, the best way to "contain" it, is to have many people get it. It's obvious that some of the countries you listed are nearing herd immunity. And lockdown was not the most important factor.

Sweden has more deaths per capita than the US, I don't envy them at all. Its curve is much shittier than its Scandinavian neighbors. One thing to keep in mind (that obviously isn't Trump's fault but is something to consider) is that Sweden is a much healthier country than we are. Its average citizen isn't 60 pounds overweight. If we went with the Sweden approach it would have been ugly.
It was working out fine in California until they lifted restrictions. Do you really not understand how retarded the argument of "Look at California - lockdowns don't work!" is when the cases in California were going down in March/April/May and then, after it lifted a lot of lockdown restrictions, cases started to go up again?
FTR, I definitely am not saying we needed a lockdown. I would have preferred the Germany approach of not going to full lockdown but having testing and contact tracing. Our privatized healthcare system sucks though so that wasn't an option.

I think if we had a very early mask mandate, things would be different.
Sure, it's easy to point out Trump for not setting the example, but our top experts were telling us to not wear masks.

Their curves aren't identical. By late June, Sweden's cases and deaths were spiking while NY (and every other Scandinavian country) were well past their peak and case count was sharply trending downward. You're also ignoring the fact Sweden doesn't have any population centers like NYC where people are packed like sardines on crowded sidewalks and crowded subways.
Compare the curve of every Scandinavian country (each of which have very similar demographics) and Sweden's is by far the shittiest.

There weren't enough masks to go around in March, a mask mandate wouldn't have done jack shit. Experts were telling us not to wear masks because hospital workers needed the limited supply.
It's also not like Trump immediately supported mask wearing once the health experts told people to wear masks. He spent several months politicizing it and only recently flip flopped on it because his poll numbers were tanking. If Trump had been advocating for mask wearing once Fauci did the sycophantic governors who seek his approval (DeathSantis, Ducey, Kemp, etc.) would have followed suit and done more to make sure people in their state wore masks.

What made Sweden's curve fall?
Maybe herd immunity, I think it's too early to tell. Sweden's curve hasn't been falling for very long, but i hope for our sake they have herd immunity since it means we should have it by September/October.
Regardless, lets say it indeed is herd immunity, Sweden's current deaths per capita number would mean 184,000 dead Americans (estimating a 327mm population). That's a pretty heavy price to pay for possible herd immunity vs. just wearing a mask and social distancing until we have a vaccine. That 184k number also ignores how fat and unhealthy Americans are vs. Swedes. Our per capita death rate would be higher than Sweden's if we went with the same policy it went with imo.

Yes, and plenty of people are still wearing medical-grade face coverings. If they said back in March "just face coverings but you don't need medical-grade masks, pls don't go out and buy those" it would have triggered a run on medical-grade masks, it's not like Americans are good at following directions :lol

Agreed, my hypothetical was trying to show that in a best case scenario, we're looking at 184k dead Americans using the Sweden method, and to your point there's still plenty of economic carnage and interruptions to daily life. It's not like Sweden kept everything chugging along. Unemployment has gone up and its economy has contracted.

There's also the risk that it would have overloaded our healthcare system with too many patients at once. The concern I have is how the heartland handles COVID-19 now that it's starting to spread to rural communities. A few rural communities that are near meat packing plants have already been hammered because of how quickly the virus spread among the plant workers.
If it's true that 20m people have/had COVID, even if no one died from COVID, there would still be 176K deaths from that group in a year.
RG math incoming..
US has a death rate of about 860 per 100K peeps. 20m people would be 860x200. That's 172K deaths. That's non-covid deaths. So if you count everyone who died with COVID as someone who died OF COVID (not that it's being done everywhere), you'd still have roughly the same deaths you have now. We know it's not that one sided, but counting method is important when large numbers come into play. This is especially true if you're going to shit yourself over daily returns.

From what I've seen, nothing unique or useful. The younger residents with less existing conditions are more likely to be asymptomatic while the older ones with advanced dementia who were already on hospice or about to be on hospice are more likely to need hospitalization/ultimately die. This obviously isn't always the case but it's the general trend.

from a molecular viewpoint this virus is quite simple. so in addition to what you added I am thinking this thing is extraordinarily efficient at binding to epithelial cells and other cells associated with the respiratory tract
The binding protein is not extraordinary so it must fit to host cell protein(s) really well. The dynamic model that I think of is putting a bunch of different plastic shapes together in a big mixing pot and shaking them and then pulling out the ones that are stuck together and finding out a very clear pattern between the shapes that bind. and then finding out you don’t need to do much shaking for them to bind surprisingly quickly.
these viruses don’t know ahead of time what type of shape to make but they have a general shape that works (coronavirus family). every once in a while you get a mutation that works extraordinarily well, I think that’s what we’ve got. In three or four years we will probably know and find my model is very simplistic, But basically fits the aforementioned description.
or maybe a virologist comes in punches me in the face for the above.

We know it's not that one sided, but counting method is important when large numbers come into play. This is especially true if you're going to shit yourself over daily returns.
What conclusions do you draw therefrom, Profe?

What’s inaccurate about this? The black community is largely homogeneous in terms of its beliefs/politics/etc. and the Hispanic community isn’t. Mexicans and Cubans are almost opposite in terms of political ideology.
Time for the Trumptards to step up their game in finding bad Biden gafs, this one’s pretty weak.

A video in which Biden is explaining his love for convertables is now "cringey" for some reason.
I think it was you who said it, but the more Trump and his campaign try to paint Biden as this ultra fragile old man who cant walk or talk and then people see him putting up coherent sentences, driving, etc, they'll be like this guy is competent.
Amazing how the trump campaign went from being very effectively in 2016 to being extremely shit in 2020.

Bannon might be a piece of shit but his management of the 2016 Trump campaign was political mastery. I’m not sure what her actual role is now but Conway was also able to reign Trump in when she needed to. Not having them has hurt his campaign a lot.

No you can’t. 95% of all whites don’t support the same political party. Black Americans do as a whole have a very homogenous set of values and opinions compared to that of other races. It doesn’t mean they’re all sheep who are programmed to think the same way however Biden fucked hinself by saying it in a way where it can easily be misconstrued.
It was really dumb because there was no need to contrast black people with Latinos. He could have just said the Latino community has a diversity of beliefs and opinions without contrasting it with the black community. It’s like he can’t stop himself from mixing an ignorant comment about black people in everything he says.

In scenarios where Trump fucks 50 things up and you fuck 1 thing up, he’s an expert at getting people to focus on the 1 thing and ignore the 50. This kind of stuff just makes it easier and should be avoided. Biden’s campaign needs to coach him on being more milquetoast on touchy subjects where he has nothing to gain.
This just doesn’t register with voters when we have much bigger things to worry about like COVID for instance. Or how do we handle opening schools.
Or how to not keep sinking the economy. Congress and Trump are still arguing about what should be in the next round of the stimulus package.
So yeah this is a blip on what matters.
