Saints marching from S.A.

San Antonio Express-News

The chances that the New Orleans Saints will play their 2006 home schedule in the Alamodome — something many considered a foregone conclusion just two weeks ago — appear to be fading fast.
A Louisiana Superdome official said Monday that an agreement reached last week between Saints owner Tom Benson and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco effectively binds the team to play in Louisiana next season and delays for at least a year the issue of relocation of the team, now temporarily based in San Antonio.
In a move encouraged by the National Football League, Benson and Blanco agreed Friday to postpone to 2007 two termination deadlines in the Saints' lease for the Superdome.
The extensions, Superdome Commission attorney Larry Roedel said, allow all sides to begin planning for the 2006 season without the threat of legal entanglements.
"The spirit of the consensus reached among the NFL, the Saints and the state last Friday was that the 2006 season will be played in Louisiana," Roedel said.
Roedel said the tentative plan for 2006 calls for Saints' home games to be played in Baton Rouge, La., and holds out hope that the Superdome, damaged by Hurricane Katrina, would be ready for use late next season.
Neither Benson nor any Saints officials could be reached for comment Monday.
Still, a representative of Mayor Phil Hardberger said Hardberger and Benson plan to meet after this season to talk about the Saints playing a full home schedule at the Alamodome next season and possible permanent relocation by the team to San Antonio.
"I can't dispute (Roedel's comments)," said Christian Archer, the mayor's special assistant. "But I can tell you nothing from our end has changed."
But Roedel is confident NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue and other league officials will push for the Saints to play in Louisiana next season.
"The NFL sets the schedules and venues for the games, and we have their assurance that the 2006 schedule will be played here," Roedel said.
"Based on how they (league officials) have worked with us this season, we trust their credibility."
The Saints relocated to San Antonio after Katrina amid reports that Benson wanted the team to play all of its home games this season at the Alamodome. Benson, long at odds with Louisiana officials over his lease arrangements, already had passed word to city officials last spring that he was interested in relocating his franchise, possibly to San Antonio.
But Tagliabue quickly intervened in the situation and hammered out an agreement that moved three of the Saints' home games to the Alamodome and four to Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.
Tagliabue also encouraged Benson in a meeting Oct. 16 in Baton Rouge to extend the termination deadlines in the team's Superdome lease for the state-owned facility.
One of those provisions, known as force majeure, had a late November deadline for the Saints to void the deal and avoid an $81 million exit penalty by declaring that the Superdome is not usable because of Katrina.
That deadline was pushed back to Jan. 15, 2007, a move designed to buy time for the Saints and the state.
Roedel said both sides are in agreement that the prospects for economic recovery in New Orleans can't be determined at present and that Benson should be able to assess that factor when considering his team's future.
Roedel said the state is prepared to take the Saints to arbitration should Benson decide to give force majeure notice. The state, Roedel said, would contend that it trumped force majeure by giving the Saints another venue — Tiger Stadium — while the Superdome is being repaired.
Before last week's postponement of the termination deadlines, momentum appeared to be building for a plan that would have the Saints play their 2006 home schedule in the Alamodome.
It was expected that the Superdome would need a year or more to repair and that Tiger Stadium, because of conflicts with LSU games, would not be an attractive option.
Tagliabue, however, began to chip away at the Alamodome option when he addressed the media at the Saints' Baton Rouge opener Oct. 16.
Tagliabue, who declined to attend the Saints' first two games in the Alamodome, forcefully stated the league's intention to keep the team in Louisiana.
Benson's request for a force majeure extension came one week after Hardberger said that the city would not be the source of funding for a new stadium for the Saints.

NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue met with New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson Monday in Washington to discuss the team's plans for the 2006 season, ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting.
Benson prefers that the Saints play next season in San Antonio. Tagliabue and other league officials want more information before making a final decision with LSU's Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La., as the preferred site.

But the League is not going to let him move to San Antonio now, Benson is burning bridges and pissing people off everywhere. Tags will likely tell Him LA or L.A. in my opinion. The other owners would not vote for the move to San Antonio now because of the PR nightmare Benson has created. Benson and Hardberger did not handle this very well at all. All parties should have stayed quiet until the season was finished. Tags has publicly stated several time the NFL is dedicated to New Orleans, Benson wants out. Right now publically it appears that its Tom Benson Versus Tags on where the team goes. Even if New Orleans is not a viable option (and I think it is and thats where The Saints wind up) I really think Tags feels that the Saints Moving would be Benson publically winning. So I think Benson would settle for the L.A. move because it is what the NFL wants, and He wants out of LA.
BUT as it is right now, I dont think Tags will let him take the team to San Antonio.

No its not, and you are welcome to post what you want. It was an example of some of the reasons people started getting banned though, your right to say it does not make it any less insensitive.
We are worried about a football team.
A football team that is a vital part of our state economy, a football team that will bring much needed revenue to a destroyed area, a football team that provides jobs with high paid state tax payers, a football team that will bring in tourists to New Orleans from visiting teams fan base.
You are damn right priorities.
The State of Louisiana and the Gulf region NEEDS the team to stay to help with rebuilding.
You can try to justify the mayors efforts to move the team to San Antonio, and I dont blame you for wanting a team here, but Not this Team, not right now, Priorities indeed, this team should stay in New Orleans.

Oddly enough, I do know some people who endured Katrina and I can tell you one thing, they don't give a damn about what happens with the Saints.
Not everyone affected by the storm will care what happens to the team, but that does not change the economic impact the team does and can have on a region.
Actually during contract negoiations with the state and an economic impact study was comissioned.
I would be glad to hunt down the results for you and post a link here if you like to read it, but long story short,
The New Orleans Saints have a very large impact on the gulf south region economically. This posative impact is STONGLY needed during a difficult time of trying to rebuild New Orleans.
For that reason alone, not to mention the emotional reasons, the Team Needs to Stay in New Orleans, to Help rebuild the area after the disaster.
It does not matter who wants them here or who does not, its a simple mathmatical fact that the Team staying in New Orleans will be a fiscal assistance to the rebuilding of the region.

Actually that's a piss poor argument. It's entertainment and nothing more. There are a number of ways to revitalize NO and far down on the list, if at all, is retaining the Saints.
Why shouldn't we try to utilyze everything on the list? the saints have a big impact. Its a fact. Every little bit helps. Entertainment brings money. Money helps us rebuild.

Oh Neaux. One of your message board "homeboys" is getting dissed. Better lose all semblance of class and wish ill will on a state that just endured the worst natural disaster in United States history. That seems fair. :rolleyes
As for the whole "priorities" argument:
The Saints are a huge part of both the New Orleans and Louisiana economy. It creates jobs and brings hundreds of millions of dollars into the economy yearly.
Make no mistake about it. The Superdome is going to be repaired either way. It has a full yearly schedule of trade shows, conventions, and other sporting events (Sugar Bowl, Final Four, etc). Even if the Saints WERE to leave, the Dome will be repaired on rebuilt. The revenue generated by the Superdome is huge and a vital part of the New Orleans economy. It is a complete fallacy to say that "nobody should be worried about rebuilding the dome or keeping the Saints". The Superdome and the Saints are two huge businesses and revenue generators. Louisiana is doing everything it can to keep big business, and the Saints are no different.
Samikeyd: I agree with what you said and I've gotten carried away with a few of my posts. But then I see people like "Oh Gee!" saying ridiculously overboard and classless garbage, and it's hard not to lump all of San Antonio's citizens together. I have met enough idiots who feel the same way - "get the Saints at all costs, Fuck Louisiana" - to taint my opinion if San Antonio's residents. Temporary? Maybe. But my opinion of the general population has changed, right, wrong, or indifferent.
The fact that the most visible San Antonio resident on the planet is spearheading the "screw morals, let's get 'em" campaign does not help the image.

Actually its very easy. You have to possess the mental ability and intelligence to separate the majority of the people from the assholes. I don't agree with anyone who has said things like that about N.O. or Louisiana but I do have the ability to distinguish between those idiots who do from the good people of San Antonio, just like I have the ability to separate the Saints fans who just want their team back, from the assholes who have dropped the hate on my city. If someone lacks the necessary mental acumen to tell who the assholes are and that they don't speak for everyone, then IMO, they really shouldn't comment until they have learned that.

Actually the reason you got banned was because you got caught redhanded not being forthright in your intentions, but maybe you were just trying to be diplomatic, but instead of owning up, you continued to deny it.
You maintained for several pages that it was not your intentions to have the teams permanently placed in SA.

Then you belittled our fundraising efforts. Thats why I think you got banned to be honest, a lot of people on SR.com worked hard, and raised money and donated money to us and you implied it was waisted or not well spent and told us if we wanted to help give it to some people who lost everything.
However you apparrently were not aware that some of the people organizing our fundraisers were actually people that lost everything.
Then I read your posts here wanting to boycott SR.com and all things Saints, calling yourself the greatest Smack taker ever.

We dont.
You should see some of the things we discuss about the New Orleans Mayor on the board.
Just because he is your mayor and he is trying to get your city a team, does not justify some of the classless things he said in his efforts to land the Saints permantly.
Defending his classlessness because you want a team too, may to you seem like the ends justifying the means, but to a person in Louisiana it appears to be classless support of the mayors efforts to move the team.
In other words, Your locale had nothing to do with the hatred you recieved, your defences of the Mayor and his actions did.

Actually the reason you got banned was because you got caught redhanded not being forthright in your intentions, but maybe you were just trying to be diplomatic, but instead of owning up, you continued to deny it.
Which is entire BullShit. When I put up the site, I put it up to have it to support the Saints in 2006. So get your facts straight friend.
You maintained for several pages that it was not your intentions to have the teams permanently placed in SA.
Again, when I put the site up, that is 100% the idea. When this first came out, I was 100% for having some team here. I even posted here, that I thought the Saints Opportunity would be a great one, albeit unforunate and weird one, to show the NFL if we could support a team in the future. In fact, I said that at least this gives the city the chance to show if we can or cannot support it.
Here is where I give SaintsReport.com credit. When I posted on the site, people, including yourself and maybe even LC (before it got ugly), provided me some good insight to what you were going through. It was then when I even changed the site (And no believe what you want, I did not do it after the fact. People here at SpursTalk who know me personally, know that not the person I am) and my opinion that the Saints should stay in New Orleans when feasible. I didn't not think it would be ready for 2006, so I continued with the San Antonio 2006 site.
So I do give credit for the site for explaining why it is important for the team to someday return, and I believe it in now. Does that change the fact that I would like to see them here for 2006? No way in hell.
And actually you and I had several good exchanges on the subject before things took a turn,
The SR.com guys questioned your true intentions, and then they did seem to gang up on you,
However after a little research by Mr. Sparkle from your posts here, it was obvious that you truely wanted the team to stay here permanently. I understand that, but you will BSing everyone, and they all knew it.
Again true. Before I ever posted on SaintsReport and put up the site, I wanted a team here. Listen, I got 50+ good emails from people telling me stories about what the Saints mean to them, and why they should stay, and much of that stuck with me. But again, that doesn't change the fact that I still think they should play in San Antonio. So I never BS'd anyone. If I wanted the Saints for good, why wouldn't I have put up SASaints.com, SanAntonioSaints.com....etc.
I wrote 2 posts on the topic, that I felt that if you wanted to make a difference to someone, don't spend money on flying a banner over a college stadium about a football team, give it to a family that can use those funds. Even if people lost everything, I can't believe that someone would be diluted enough to believe that paying for the fuel of an airplane and banner company would be more important than helping a family who's kids don't have food or clothing. Am I wrong? This is a billon dollar decision, and one that won't be made over a airplane flying with a banner.......
Then I read your posts here wanting to boycott SR.com and all things Saints, calling yourself the greatest Smack taker ever.
Did I say boycott. Hell no, In fact I visit the site each day and read up what is going on, just because I can't post doesn't mean the site it not good for info. I'm a Saints Fans my friend, why would I boycott all things Saints?????
As far as the greatest ever......I'll let my record stand for itself.
I appriciated your initial effort of civility, and I engaged you in a reasonable conversation, but with just a little turmoil you flopped to the other extreme.
Never.
When I was accused of something that I did not ever do, that is when I reply with prudence. If I posted that you were a racist, bigot, and said that you told me that All Mexicans are Spics. You would refute the comments, no different than I replied about my false accusations.
The jabs at our fundraising were uncalled for, and we knew you were not forthright in you telling us you do not want the team in SA permanently

As for the fundraiser and your opinion of it... common sense would tell you just to keep it to yourself. When the very people involved in the fundraiser have lost homes and jobs, a San Antonian coming in and belittling the efforts if VERY tacky.
As for me, I'm originally from Louisiana. I contributed to the fundraiser. I wrote the text part of the flyers for the Miami game. I handed them out at the game. I gave money to the radio fund. If my family and friends from Louisiana tell me that they want to put the effort in to keep the Saints, that's good enough for me. I was only telling you our experience and those who really meant to go there NOT to bash to NOLA. But like every message board, there will always be someone who may screw it up for everyone else.

You may be right, I'm sure people weren't thrilled but am I not entitled to an opinion that I think the money could be better put to use?
I even posted there, that I thought the effort was great, and that it was cool to see people bond together, but what if they did that to help out the families that you feeling for.
Are you from Louisiana?
You are also entitled to the backlash of your opinion if it offends people.
Some of the organizes of the fund raisers were actually those who lost it all.
that was a touchy subject the fundraising...

My bad, that was Mouse that said to boycott, I stand by all other points though.
No problem, You have to understand that Mouse is one step above the game. His posts are meant to expedite feelings. And most people here know that.
Again I believe your change of heart about keeping the team in San Antonio permanently, but as LC points out, that was not conveyed to us at SR.com well.
I didn't get a chance to. Before I knew it, I was being accused of things, and never got a chance to post that before I got banned
and it seems we are all alot closer to an understanding and I think VY will not win the heisman. southern cal....
Everyone LOVES usfuckingc and I am sick of it!

You didn't directly insult anyone. But your posts were smug and inflammatory in a smarmy, "jab at you" sort of way.
Move like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Just kidding. Sorry.
As for the fundraiser and your opinion of it... common sense would tell you just to keep it to yourself. When the very people involved in the fundraiser have lost homes and jobs, a San Antonian coming in and belittling the efforts if VERY tacky.
Yes, you were right. Nobody ever accused me of having good taste. Hell, I married a dog of a woman.
I value the opinion of those who were directly affected more than that of a nonfactor such as yourself.
That is cool. Believe it or not, I do admire the determination.
This appears to be the end of a fun hobby of mine.
What else can we disagree on?
