This year, no do-over's like last year. You lose one game, you're out for the season, just like dying of Covid. No "covid" related excuses either.

Everyone participates. Normal rules apply. You can only pick each team up to once for the year.

Week 1 (millennial messiah):

Raiders @ Panthers , just because one team is so terribly bad and the other is competent.

No fans in Jacksonville for week 1. Good call.

Hint: pretty much anyone playing versus the Panthers or Jags this year will be a good bet IMO.

no, Playoffs is a separate animal... it's only used if there's a tiebreaker needed... but the "only one team a year" doesn't apply to playoffs naturally.

Der Fuhrer Cuomo saying no fans in Buffalo for 2020 unless the pandemic is completely over by then, which it won't be. The fans are literally the only thing Buffalo has in their favor and helping them to win games at all. Their QB and HC are terrible and their record-easy schedule from 2019 isn't repeating itself in 2020. The football team going to get exposed this year for the frauds they were last year.

I actually have the Jets winning this game, though it should be close.

Instead of being out with the first mistake, it might be cool to keep a record. You still can't repeat teams but at least you won't be out of the game with the first mistake. At the end of the season, the best record wins.

Yeah, I know a lot of guys do that but I don't get the reasoning. What's the difference between using the Ravens now and using them later? You are still going to use them in games where they are heavily favoured. Using them in close prediction games is dumb, so what's the difference in using the Ravens in week 1 vs the Browns or using the Ravens vs the Jets in week 11? If anything, it makes more sense to use them earlier. Go for the sure thing now to stay alive and worry about the other weeks later.

The idea is, you make sketchier picks earlier on, and save the best / most favored teams for later, when the rest of the survival pool competitors don't have those teams available.

since I picked the Raiders week 1 and they won, I get to pick any other team in week 2. I've got some good ideas for week 2 (Arizona over the 'Skins, 49ers over the Jets, Packers over Lions, etc) but I'll wait until mid week to officially choose.

But the funny thing is, they weren't alone. That was the top "survivor" pick on NFL Gameday on NFL Network this morning, pretty unanimously. :lol

I myself actually considered the Colts a little safer (though not as "safe" as, say, the Ravens or even the Pats) but I wanted to get the Raiders out the way because of their sketchy defense.

Millennial Messiah Pick (Week 2, 2020):

Atlanta Falcons @ Dallas Cowboys.

Reasoning: The Falcons are just the better team at this point, especially considering the Cowboys O-line injuries. The Falcons played very well on Week 1 on both sides of the ball, but had bad luck on 4th down (both sides of the ball) and lost to IMO the best team in the NFC and possibly the NFL. The Falcons' formidable defensive front will get after Dak Prescott and the Cowboys' banged up line. I don't think Kellen Moore will adjust the offense in time. On the other side of the ball, Matt Ryan should be able to dominate against a pair of safeties that couldn't cover for a split second on Sunday night. The Falcons look like a very good NFC contender in 2020. The Cowboys are still beginning to sort things out.

Lastly, Mike McCarthy is NOT like Jason Garrett; with Green Bay, he was notorious for being streaky (i.e. going on losing streaks and then big winning streaks) as opposed to Jason Garrett's lose-one, win-one, lose-one, win a couple approach. Garrett's Cowboys always played their best after a heartbreaking loss, like Sunday night. McCarthy's Packers, on the other hand, tended to follow up such a loss with another loss. But, on the bright side, McCarthy's Packers went on some long winning streaks and beat better teams in the process than Garrett ever did.

Falcons 31
Cowboys 24.

I like that pick too, but I'm strangely concerned about it from a 49ers perspective. You think that system is too good to fail and they lost because Arizona really is that good too (that's my theory) but there is also the other possibility (25-30%) chance that they're feeling the hangover and it's real, especially after their defensive leader (no longer an elite corner, but still the emotional leader of the secondary) Sherman went out for the season [UPDATE: he might actually only miss three weeks: source (https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29898593/49ers-placing-cb-richard-sherman-injured-reserve-leg-injury-sources-say)].

Niners over Giants even with Mullens is a lock. The 49ers system is just too good to fail. Not overly player-reliant. The drop off in talent will only hurt them against the very best teams of the conference, like say Seattle, Arizona, New Orleans, maybe Green Bay or the Rams. But Kittle and Jimmy G's injuries don't appear to be long term. Running back is loaded with talent with a very fresh McKinnon and Coleman, and they can always bring Freeman back to the system as well. Sherman will be back soon. Even Mostert seems like a week-to-week thing. The long-term losses on the DL will sting, but they are very deep there already. Javon Kinlaw's time to shine. Dee Ford will be back soon.

Wilson and the Seahawks lost there last time they played there, even though they were (obviously) inferior. They have a tendency to struggle and lose on the road against inferior AFC opponents in the Wilson+Carroll era. I have them losing @ Buffalo too. I have them 13-3 overall with losses at Miami, at Buffalo, and at SF.

I have Buffalo today. Only because i could see them getting upset by a team like Baltimore next week.

And Cuomo is actually letting fans in, tbh, actually at a decent clip. Bills got this.

I was tempted to pick Cleveland at Pittsburgh tomorrow, because I don't see Cleveland winning twice, but I just couldn't do it.

I don't have a better option. My SB pick is Bucs-Chiefs. I think the obvious move would be Chiefs over Browns, but then I wouldn't get to pick the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, I don't think the Packers have any fucking chance against either the Saints or the Bucs in the championship game, so I have to pick a team that I'm confident will lose going forward. Also, I already picked the Bills this weekend, so I can't pick them again, even though I would probably favor them over the Ravens.

So it's more of a strategical ploy than anything. I think the Rams might actually win, but it's at Lambeau and the Rams are a warm weather team, so I give the edge to the Packers even without fans. But the NFC South teams are astronomically better than the fraudulent Packers who won't be able to even hang with either one of them. Of course Bucs-Saints is a toss-up but I want to save that survivor pick for the NFCCG.

You can't "lose" in super bowl week in such use case; you already lose by default before the SB even happens because you've already used up both SB teams.
BD24 and I are the only ones with a chance. In which case we would pick the Bucs if KC wins, and he and I would be co-champions of the playoff survivor pool. If BUF wins tonight (unlikely), then there are no champions this year.

spurraider21 (https://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=31905) DAF86 (https://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=11102) Next year I'm going to start a survivor pool thread with a twist: Each user gets two BYEs that they can use at any point during the season. Still, if they get the pick wrong, they're out. But they can use the two BYEs in weeks they're not confident in, once they're used up they are gone. Sort of like the lifelines on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire.

I think that that will keep people around longer in the survivor pool next year, tbh. And it's fair and not whacky.

NFL is considering expanding to a 17 game season, with either 18 or 19 weeks depending on if they go with one or two Byes. I hate that idea and they need to nix it. Would be awkward having an odd number. Plus, how are they going to manage home/aways? It wouldn't be fair to have one team play 9 games at home and 8 on the road or vice versa. Unless they're planning to host all those games overseas and/or in Mexico. But I don't think the pandemic will be completely gone by this September.
