Anti-CRT laws are a statutory shield for white backlash
The board voted 4-2 to lower the status of Tulsa Public Schools to “accredited with warning” on Thursday after the State Department of Education determined an implicit bias training for teachers in August 2021 violated House Bill 1775. The law, which restricts discussions of race and sex in public schools, is widely seen as targeting critical race theory. The state investigation began after a complaint from a teacher who has not been publicly identified, according to the Oklahoman.
The board also demoted another district, Mustang Public Schools near Oklahoma City, to “accredited with warning” after it self-reported that a teacher had violated House Bill 1775 by using an exercise that made students uncomfortable on account of their race or sex.https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2022/07/30/crt-oklahoma-tulsa-schools-shame-white/

right wingers keep banning books and picking on queers, for some reason
I remember when PEN would put out press releases about book bans and it would be about Iran or the erstwhile Eastern Bloc.
Fifty-two books by 41 authors will be removed from the libraries of the Alpine School District in Utah, the state’s largest district, following a decision made by the district. The ban affects noteworthy titles such as Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, Forever… by Judy Blume, and the 2015 Caldecott Honor Book, This One Summer, by Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Jillian Tamaki. The books were selected for removal after an internal library audit determined that they contain “sensitive material” under a new law (https://www.standard.net/news/education/2022/jul/28/utah-state-board-of-education-approves-library-materials-policy/), and “do not have literary merit.” Twenty-one of all titles removed (42%) feature LBGTQ+ characters and or themes.
Jonathan Friedman, director of free expression and education programs at PEN America, in response, said: “Sweeping removals of books are not supposed to be a routine thing in school libraries. Students have a right to learn about the variety of human experiences and perspectives that these books provide. Serious questions remain about how this decision was arrived at, and whether state statutes were properly applied.”
Friedman said: “This is a concerning escalation of the book banning we saw last school year. Elected officials and attorneys general are now easing and encouraging banning, facilitating the fulfillment of demands from local activists. We call on the Alpine School District to retain these books, demonstrate greater respect for considered processes and students’ right to read.”

Demonizing gays and trans is approximately 25% of the TX GOP platform. Appealing to the worst in people is the way they get elected.
What drew both groups to the suburban school district meeting in Tarrant County was a 36-page document of proposed district policies that was publicly released only 72 hours earlier. The proposals were championed by the school board’s four-member conservative majority, recently elected with the help of a flood of dark money (https://twitter.com/Mike_Hixenbaugh/status/1559348540417130496), part of a nationwide trend in which crusading reactionaries have turned school boards into perches from which to wage war on literature, queer children, and non-existent curricula. Most controversially, the GCISD policies include a total ban on employees engaging in any discussion of what the district defines as “gender fluidity.” https://www.texasobserver.org/gcisd-grapevine-coleyville-lgbtq-trans/

They Want to Kill Libraries
The Last Place in America Where You Are a Person, Not a Customer
In August, a small group of vocal, angry Idahoans targeted the Boundary County Library, demanding that the library purge 300 books on a list of “inappropriate” materials (https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/books/2022/06/29/banned-books-explained/7772046001/) that circulates widely among right-wing conspiracy groups.
Boundary County Library didn’t have the books that the conspiracy theorists were angry about. Nevertheless, the group harassed and threatened the library staff, demanded the removal of the library board, and continued to target library staff even after they quit their jobs (https://www.krem.com/article/news/local/north-idaho-library-director-announces-resignation/293-e48caef6-9e68-4440-920b-67569e0aa330).
These conspiracists are part of a small but vocal minority of people who’ve been hoaxed by deep-pocketed right-wing media barons, who have propagated a lie that libraries are full of “groomers” who expose children to “inappropriate” materials as part of a program of sexual abuse.
Every accusation is a confession (https://doctorow.medium.com/takes-one-to-know-one-104d7d749408). The upper ranks of evangelicals (https://www.npr.org/2022/08/13/1117362904/southern-baptists-doj-investigation-sexual-abuse) and the Catholic Church (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church_sexual_abuse_cases) are filled with pedophile abusers; as is the slate of MAGA election candidates (https://www.cnn.com/2016/05/19/politics/trump-delegate-child-porn-gun-explosives).
The “groomer” panic is all astroturf. It’s a cynical ploy to whip up scared and easily confused people and point them at libraries, and not just libraries that have Genderqueer on the shelf or host Drag Queen Story Hours. They’re targeting all the libraries.

As the public sphere has shrunk, libraries have expanded to pick up the slack. Librarians liase with social workers for their patrons, help them apply for emergency rental assistance, give them broadband onsite and to take home with them (the New York Public Library calls its wifi hospot program “lending out the entire internet”). Your library will loan you a suit for a job interview (https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/18/health/new-york-library-loans-ties-handbags-trnd), tools to fix your home (https://www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org/locations/tool-lending-library), or toys for your kid (https://www.childrenscouncil.org/families/understanding-child-care/toybook-lending-library/).
The Defund the Police movement asks us to reexamine the decision to load all kinds of non-law-enforcement duties on cops: social worker, mental health case-worker, domestic violence mediator. Both cops and their critics agree that it’s a mistake to ask cops to take on all these extra duties, and we’re meant to feel some sympathy for overburdened law enforcement officers whose jobs have expanded to fill the gaps in the austerity-frayed social safety net.
Librarians do all that too — and somehow, they manage to do it without killing anyone in a mental health crisis or struggling with addiction.

I really liked The Stand.
The long version takes on a bit too much for itself, but it does not matter to me because parts of The Stand were fantastic imo. And I really dont even like fiction that much. But yeah I can see how it would be horribly overlooked. An old lady has sex with a younger man in a tent, then she dies, and he leaves her Stinking in her vomit.
Guess it was too long and the thick Board missed that and many other parts.
And the devil imagery throughout... Wow... good job Board.

According to Blight’s 2001 book Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory, a commemoration organized by freed slaves and some white missionaries took place on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, S.C., at a former planters’ racetrack where Confederates held captured Union soldiers during the last year of the war. At least 257 prisoners died, many of disease, and were buried in unmarked graves, so black residents of Charleston decided to give them a proper burial.

In the approximately 10 days leading up to the event, roughly two dozen African American Charlestonians reorganized the graves into rows and built a 10-foot-tall white fence around them. An archway overhead spelled out “Martyrs of the Race Course” in black letters.
About 10,000 people, mostly black residents, participated in the May 1 tribute, according to coverage back then in the Charleston Daily Courier and the New York Tribune. Starting at 9 a.m., about 3,000 black schoolchildren paraded around the race track holding roses and singing the Union song “John Brown’s Body,” (https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/brown-history-john-browns-body/) and were followed by adults representing aid societies for freed black men and women. Black pastors delivered sermons and led attendees in prayer and in the singing of spirituals, and there were picnics. James Redpath, the white director of freedman’s education in the region, organized about 30 speeches by Union officers, missionaries and black ministers. Participants sang patriotic songs like “America” and “We’ll Rally around the Flag” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” In the afternoon, three white and black Union regiments marched around the graves and staged a drill.

harassing random high schoolers now, over nothing.
the antiwoke are the biggest pussies in the world.
A handful of adults blocked the path of students leaving McCallum High School Tuesday and used a megaphone to tell the kids they were the “devil” and headed to hell.
Videos provided to the Chronicle and posted online show the adults filmed themselves laughing outside of McCallum before the school day ended. Later, as students tried to board their buses and as parents arrived to pick their kids up, the Christian group stood in the way and shouted things like, “if you had an abortion you’re going to hell because you are evil,” as well as anti-gay hate speech.
A video posted by the group shows that Austin ISD staff asked the men to move a few meters out of the way of the buses to allow kids to board, but they did not. Austin ISD police were also there to stand between the harassers and the students, but some parents still expressed alarm. “Very upsetting, with everyone wondering what to do,” one parent told the Chronicle. “Should we respond? Should we ignore? Just very unsettling that something like this could happen so close to a school.”
Parents were also concerned about what seemed to be vague threats. One of the men yelled that Jesus will “judge the living and the dead. That’s what he’s gonna do. I’ve already seen some transvestite out here boo-hooing and crying. … God’s people will never comply with the Devil’s lies.”

remind me, was slavery in the US race-based? was it white people exploiting black people, or the other way around?
we got to find some way to both sides this.
...in many instances, its reviewers also made objections in the state’s attempt to sanitize aspects of slavery and the plight of African Americans throughout history, according to a Miami Herald/Tampa Bay Times review of internal state comments.
For example, a lesson in the Advanced Placement course focused on how Europeans benefited from trading enslaved people and the materials enslaved laborers produced. The state objected to the content, saying the instructional approach “may lead to a viewpoint of an ‘oppressor vs. oppressed’ based solely on race or ethnicity.”

a NC Supreme Court Justice talking about diversity to a legal newsletter is a firing offense
pretty much all these antiwoke laws are speech codes that institutionalize viewpoint discrimination by the state against the people.
The Commission has indicated that it believes that Justice Earls’ commentson these issues of legitimate public concern potentially violate a provision of the Codewhich requires judges to conduct themselves “in a manner that promotes publicconfidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary.”https://fingfx.thomsonreuters.com/gfx/legaldocs/dwvkaelxovm/08292023earls.pdf

New to me, origin of the "grandfather clause."
"Because of the 15th Amendment, you can't pass laws saying blacks can't vote, which is what they wanted to do," says Eric Foner, a Columbia University historian. "But the 15th Amendment allowed restrictions that were nonracial. This was pretty prima facie a way to allow whites to vote, and not blacks."
Some state legislatures enacted grandfather clauses despite knowing they couldn't pass constitutional muster. The Louisiana state constitutional convention adopted a grandfather clause even though one of the state's own U.S. senators warned it would be "grossly unconstitutional."
For that reason, nearly every state put a time limit on their grandfather clauses. They hoped to get whites registered before these laws could be challenged in court.
"Once you've got people removed from the rolls, it becomes less necessary," Smethurst says. "The white people are on the rolls, and the black people are not."
African-Americans typically lacked the financial resources to file suit. The NAACP, founded in 1909, persuaded a U.S. attorney to challenge Oklahoma's grandfather clause, which had been enacted in 1910.
Of the more than 55,000 blacks who were in Oklahoma in 1900, only 57 came from states that had permitted African-Americans to vote in 1867, according to Klarman's book From Jim Crow to Civil Rights: The Supreme Court and the Struggle for Racial Equality.
In 1915, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously in Guinn v. United States that grandfather clauses were unconstitutional. The court in those days upheld any number of segregationist laws — and even in Guinn specified that literacy tests untethered from grandfather clauses were OK.
The justices were concerned that the grandfather clause was not only discriminatory but a clear attempt by a state to nullify the federal Constitution. It "was so obvious an evasion that the Supreme Court could not have failed to declare it unconstitutional," The Washington Post wrote at the time.
The decision had almost no effect, however. The Oklahoma Legislature met in special session to grandfather in the grandfather clause. The new law said those who had been registered in 1914 — whites under the old system — were automatically registered to vote, while African-Americans could only register between April 30 and May 11, 1916, or forever be disenfranchised.
That law stayed on the books until a Supreme Court ruling in 1939.

Many of the students are probably still alive.
I was intrigued to see Ezra Pound and Donald Davidson mentioned in connection with the 1958 Clinton High School bombing. One of the prominent agitators was an antisemitic conspiracist from NJ.
https://digital.lib.utk.edu/collections/islandora/object/volvoices:2284/datastream/JPG/view
It was just over a year after the desegregation of Clinton High that Eisenhower finally unsheathed the sword. When the governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, called on the state’s National Guard to prevent nine Black students from entering Central High School, in Little Rock, Eisenhower, after agonizing privately, federalized the Guard and sent in the 101st Airborne, to insure the students’ safety. The Black students were able to attend.
But the following fall the state legislature closed all public high schools in Little Rock for a year. Southern states had always threatened this as an option. In 1959, Prince Edward County, in Virginia, closed its public schools for five years. Speed was very deliberate across the South. By 1964, ten years after Brown, less than two per cent of Black students in the South attended school with whites.

They actually bomb [John Casper's] headquarters in December. The local Klan bans him from all meetings in the spring. The white Citizens' Council bans him from their meetings in the spring, so he liked to think he was in charge. Very interesting article about Josiah Henson, whose life story Harriet Beecher Stowe drew on for Uncle Tom's Cabin.
Who was Josiah Henson? Born in 1789, according to his autobiography, he was enslaved in Maryland and Kentucky and served as an overseer before escaping to Canada in 1830. By 1862, when Lincoln checked out the Key, Henson had helped found a 200-acre settlement in Ontario, known as Dawn, which provided a refuge for hundreds of free Black people who had fled bondage in America. He had also made numerous return trips to the American South to help guide enslaved people to freedom. In total, Henson said, he freed 118 people; by comparison, Harriet Tubman is believed to have freed about 70.

Update on the Llano library case, the local Commissioners Court just got sued for improperly canning the librarian after she refused to remove allegedly indecent material.
Apparently one of the Commissioners is claiming the matter was never put before them.
Llano County Conservatives would rather close public libraries, for some reason, if they contain "naughty images and words", or books about divisive topics like caste.
Moss, a defendant in the lawsuit, said the Commissioners Court does not determine whether librarians are hired or fired and that he had no role in or knowledge of the decision.
"The first thing I heard about Ms. Baker being terminated was on Facebook," he said in a phone call with the Statesman.
Moss said the Commissioners Court never voted to have books removed. He also said the court was not aware of books being removed, and that he had not seen any of the 17 books listed in the federal lawsuit (https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/63290703/little-v-llano-county/) before he was served with the papers.
The lawsuit says Milum removed books based on their content, violating the library system's weeding policies, by which books that have not been checked out for several years, are in poor physical condition or are outdated are taken out of circulation. Moss said the commissioners had no part in the weeding process.
A group of Llano County residents who opposed the censorship filed a lawsuit in April 2022. A judge for the Western District of Texas ruled the court had violated First Amendment rights and issued a preliminary injunction that ordered the county to replace numerous books (https://www.statesman.com/story/news/politics/state/2023/03/31/judge-issues-preliminary-injunction-on-llano-county-banned-books-case/70069902007/) in April 2023.
The county appealed the ruling to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, where the case remains pending.
After the court order came down, members of the pro-removal group demanded that the county close the libraries altogether to prevent children from accessing what they called "pornographic filth," the Statesman reported (https://www.statesman.com/story/news/politics/state/2023/04/13/banned-books-llano-county-texas-libraries-will-stay-open-amid-lawsuit/70113040007/). Dozens of people attended a Commissioners Court meeting convened by Cunningham over the issue, with more than half urging the county to keep the public institutions open.
The libraries remained open, but Baker said she has watched as the library has become less accessible to the public. The county has not hired a new librarian to replace Baker and operates with one full-time and one part-time librarian, compared with three full-time librarians in 2021. And though the libraries used to be open on Saturdays, they are now closed on weekends.
"The library cannot function with the skeletal staff that it has now," Baker said.
The county also has frozen book purchases since 2021 and blocked access to more than 17,000 digital titles, the lawsuit states.

White minority rule in Newbern, AL. Somehow the VRA never took effect there.
The first Black mayor in Newbern, Alabama filed a lawsuit against white town leaders because he claims they are preventing him from taking office, and today a federal district court held a hearing in the case about a preliminary injunction filed by the plaintiffs.
Patrick Braxton claims in his November 2022 complaint that after he was lawfully selected as mayor, the outgoing mayor and his town council changed the locks to the town hall, removed or destroyed town documents and denied Braxton access to the town’s mailbox and bank account.
Newbern, a small majority-Black town, has not had a mayoral election since the Voting Rights Act (VRA) was passed in 1965. Instead, the town’s practice was to have the current mayor appoint the next mayor. That continued until April 2020 when Braxton decided he wanted to run for mayor to create change for the town’s Black residents, according to his complaint.
He asked the sitting mayor Haywood Stokes for the candidacy documents he needed, but alleges that Stokes falsely told him the town could not have elections. The complaint argues that Stokes told this lie so that Braxton would not submit his paperwork in time for the candidate deadline.
However, after consulting with the Alabama Conference of Black Mayors, Braxton did end up filing properly, according to an amended complaint submitted in March 2023.
Since no one else filed for office, Braxton became mayor-elect on July 22, 2020, which is the protocol under Alabama law. The amended complaint argues that Stokes did not file for candidacy because he “knew or reasonably believed that he would not prevail in an election for the office of Mayor against Braxton.”
Braxton was told that since no one ran for city council, he could appoint council members, so he selected five Black Newbern residents, who joined his lawsuit as plaintiffs.
Then, without notifying any of the town residents, Stokes and his council members decided to hold a special election on Oct. 6, 2020, resulting in the all-white group being elected.
Despite Braxton and his council members being sworn into office in November 2020, Stokes and the other defendants prevented them from accessing information about the town and entering the Town Hall, stopping them from taking power.
Braxton and the five council members he appointed filed their lawsuit in November 2022, arguing that the defendants engaged in intentional racial discrimination by refusing to let Black residents participate in local elections or hold local office, violating the 14th Amendment.
They also argued that Stokes and the town council participated in a conspiracy to deny Braxton and his town council their constitutional rights by holding an illegal secret special election. https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/federal-court-in-alabama-hears-black-mayors-challenge-to-white-town-leaders-blocking-him-from-office/

I read about this when it first happened. Utterly insane to try and declare that in our REPUBLIC, such a thing as a free and open election for Mayor's office simply "could not [happen]."
This is the primary problem with the far right, and why they are being compared with Nazis. Their rhetoric has reached an absurdity that even the common citizen (should) see is not only highly unethical, it's illegal and will be opposed. They've the lost the thread and are falling back hard on simple racism, which in my opinion, even a large portion of whites (hopefully a majority) won't stand for.
I want to add that I'm glad such a thing as dissolving congress is not part of the President's constitutional rights. It's not entirely related but I think it's important to realize how this prevents someone like Trump from easily seizing power.

Good thing racism is no more
Newly obtained documents show child protective services workers were told in August to promptly check on the children in Sissonville who were found last month living in a shed without access to running water or a toilet. However, the state health department doesn’t have travel documentation showing that CPS workers made contact with the children before police discovered the situation more than a month later.
Kanawha County deputies arrested adoptive parents, Donald Ray Lantz and Jeanne Kay Whitefeather, in October on felony child neglect charges after a deputy found two teens locked in a shed with “devastating” conditions, including a pan on a tarp to serve as the bathroom. One sleeping bag was rolled up on the concrete floor. The parents remain in jail.
Documents from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, which oversees CPS, showed the department received a CPS referral on Aug. 25 about the family. West Virginia Watch obtained the paperwork using the Freedom of Information Act.
The referral said, “It is believed that the children are residing in a room attached to the barn,” and, “The family may be using the children as slaves.”https://westvirginiawatch.com/2023/11/28/state-says-no-docs-exist-showing-cps-responded-to-calls-about-sissonville-kids-found-locked-in-shed/

Is it CRT when you refuse to hold elections so a white old boys club can appoint themselves to run a majority black town in perpetuity, or is it only CRT when the facts are reported publicly?
During discovery for the case and last month’s hearing about a motion for preliminary injunction, those on the former town council admitted to never holding elections.
“They claimed that they didn’t know they had to,” Fajana said. “Instead, their process was when a position became vacant, they would just kind of recruit among their community and the people that they knew. They would just appoint that person and it would happen, basically, in a covert manner. That had been the process for as long as anybody could remember. Anybody who was serving in the past town council said that’s how they came to power.”
Per the settlement, the defendants “specifically deny having engaged in any wrongful practice, or other unlawful conduct”, saying instead they reached the “compromise” to avoid protracted litigation

for registering black folks to vote
some of the people Carolyn Daniels took in in the 1960s are still alive
As SNCC formed in southwest Georgia, drawing students from the Northeast into the heart of the South, Daniels’ two-bedroom house became their headquarters. “There is always a ‘mama,’” Sherrod noted in The Making of Black Revolutionaries, the autobiography of SNCC Executive Secretary James Forman. “She is usually a militant woman in the community, outspoken, understanding, and willing to catch hell, having already caught her share.” In Terrell, Carolyn Daniels, he said, “is the ‘mama’ for us there.”
Daniels was willing to catch hell, and catch hell she did. Holsaert, the SNCC worker who lived with Daniels in the summer of 1962, remembers the flashy red and white Chevrolet Impala that Daniels would take SNCC students canvassing in. “It was a big, showy car that was an act of defiance, really, on her part,” Holsaert said. Four years earlier, as Daniels was well aware, Dawson police officer Weyman B. Cherry beat to death a Black resident, James Brazier, for having the temerity to purchase a new Chevrolet Impala.
Daniels taught people at her church how to register to vote and held her own voter education classes supported by King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference. When white segregationists burned down the churches where Daniels taught in Terrell and nearby Lee County, she moved her classes to makeshift tents.
In September 1962, night riders fired shots into Daniels’ cinder-block home. Two SNCC workers were hit: Prathia Hall in the finger and Jack Chatfield in the arm.
“I got much of my courage and strength from her,” says Willie Ricks, also known as Mukasa Dada. “Just by being in that house, going in that house, and sleeping in that house, it took a lot of the fear out of me.”
One night, in December 1963, Daniels was home alone, lying in bed, when she heard footsteps and the slam of car doors. Then the shooting began. Daniels rolled under her bed. A bomb thrown through a window landed beside her but failed to detonate. When the shooting stopped, Daniels realized she had taken a bullet in the foot and went to the hospital. While she was there, the bomb exploded.
The entire house was destroyed. There was a massive hole in the ground where her bed had been, and slats from the roof lay around the rubble like fallen soldiers. But, in Daniels’ words, “we just kept going.” She rebuilt. And then she welcomed back the organization and students whose work had made her house a target.
Holsaert recalls the contrast between the place that hated them and the person who inspired them. It was “a rural, isolated, segregationist, violent setting,” she says. “And yet this spirit.”

John Lewis was leading a march in Camden County, AL, which then was 78% black and had zero black registered voters
Civil rights and voting rights legislation that were passed over the next two years magically and instantly dispelled all racism in the USA -- forever
Except for one kind.
Racism against white people is the only kind that exists now, or is officially recognized by our government.

By 1964, ten years after Brown, less than two per cent of Black students in the South attended school with whites.
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/08/07/the-civil-rights-showdown-nobody-remembersis it really ancient history when the students who desegregated Clinton, TN are still alive in 2025?
