View Full Version : Walkaway: This Republican party is not worth saving

I was a Republican for most of my adult life. I came of political age in 1980, and although I grew up in a working-class Democratic stronghold in Massachusetts, I found a home in Ronald Reagan’s GOP. Back then, the Republicans were a confident “party of ideas” (a compliment bestowed on them by one of their foes, Democratic Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York), optimistic boosters of the American dream at home, and fierce opponents of the Soviet Union overseas. While the Democrats were the party of recrimination and retreat, the Republicans were the party of the future.
I understand the attachment to that GOP, even among those who have sworn to defeat Donald Trump, but the time for sentimentality is over. That party is long gone. Today the Republicans are the party of “American carnage” and Russian collusion, of scams, plots, and weapons-grade contempt for the rule of law. The only decent, sensible, and conservative position is to vote against this Republican Party at every level, and bring the sad final days of a once-great political institution to an end. Then build the party back up again—from scratch.
I’m not advocating for voting against the GOP merely to punish Republicans for Trump’s existence in their party. Rather, conservatives must finally accept that at this point Trump and the Republican Party are indistinguishable. Trump and his circle have gutted the old GOP and stuffed its empty husk with the Trump family’s paranoia and corruption.
...
No person should ever get a second chance to destroy the Constitution. Trump has brought the United States to the brink of civil catastrophe, and the Republican Party has protected him from the consequences of all his immoral and illegal actions more ably than even Fred Trump did. Conservatives need to put the current Republican Party out of its—and our—misery.

It is difficult to accurately judge where Republican policies stand because of the racism hoax. I have never seen a nation so focused on race. It wasn't like this before Obama's Presidency. I tip my hat to Democrats for playing this cheat card but eventually it won't have the same effect, backfiring. This is the land of opportunity, there is no discrimination based on gender, race or religion. Wealth - yes.
As for policies. I look at my California ballot and took a peak at 2016 to remember. It is majority just raising taxes. Overwhelmingly on business. Can Democrats accomplish anything without raising taxes? The message has always been attractive to the young and dreamers. Free stuff, climate saved and no more racism. And the evil rich white people pay for it all, right? How did Democrats convince supporters to expand a government that they themselves consider broken (or even corrupt).
Agreed on turning the page on the old Republican party. Forget those warmongers. Trump ultimately might have failed by being too much about big business. Still screw Hollywood and all the progressive baggage. Focus should be on working class. Stay with the populism Trump seemed to connect with.
Republicans should remain the working class and Democrats can try their luck again as the victimhood party of free stuff. Seems Americans need to be reminded what is like to pay more for stuff you didn't vote for.

Republicans nominate a person of color and chunk of Democrat playbook is neutralized. In America: "you keep more of your paycheck" will always be more effective than "pay us to fix problems". Even Democrats agree with the Defund Police stance.

The Republican party has done nothing but cut taxes for the wealthiest people in the country. That seems to be their ONLY real policy goal.
They are bought and paid for by large corporations. You know it, and I know it.
That will never, ever change.
Name the best Republican led policy initiative that benefitted working class people the most in the last 20 years.

Taxes on business are just another pass through cost to the consumer, just like cost of goods. You could actually consider it a regressive tax since the poor spend 100% of income on goods and the wealthy spend a considerably less percentage.

Someone said ADA was the only Repug Act For he could cite For The Disabled People, well over 20 years ago, almost 30.
Then the Repugs ruled that nobody has to comply with ADA until disabled people complain, putting the burden on disabled.

If this is the case why are corporations constantly lobbying for a lower corporate tax rate? Their behavior doesn’t at all align with this theory.
If you’re talking about other taxes like sales taxes or franchise taxes then I agree. Imo the sales tax is extremely regressive and should just be replaced with higher income taxes.

So why do corporations lobby so aggressively to lower corporate taxes if they’re just costs passed on to the consumer?
Theoretically this would mean price goes down if corporate taxes go down, no? Prices didn’t go down after Trump slashed corporate taxes 3 years ago, the savings was just used on stock buy backs.

Not all costs are passed down into the price of goods sold. Given how solidly profitable U.S. businesses have been in the last 20 years, there is more than enough room in profit margins to eat a little tax.
It is regress to the extent is is passed down.
Build a solid safety net, and you are more than likely going to benefit lower income people more than they would spend in such a paradigm though.

American business seems to have forgotten the simple lesson that Ford learned.
People with more money to spend... spend it.
Lower income segments even more so.
Increase taxes, but give it to segments that are more likely to spend, and you have more economic activity. More demand.
If companies in the US all collectively decided to raise wages for all people accross the board, you would see a pretty decided, sudden jump in GDP.
This is why raising taxes on those who are almost ceratin to save (high wealth) and providing it to those who are most ceratin to spend (low wealth/income) provides no real economic drag.
The hyper-wealthy have brainwashed legions of drooling idiots to think otherwise though, because it benefits them, as if human being really needs more than a billion dollars. Supply side economics has been thoroughly debunked. We are nowhere near where the brainwashed drooling idiots think we are on the Laffer curve.

Based on that chart, Dems averaged 30.5% affiliation in 2016 in polls up to this point of the year, vs. Republicans at 27.6% and Independents at 39.9%.
Comparing that to 2020 averages, Dems are -0.9% (29.6%), Republicans are +0.9% (28.5%) and Independents are down -0.6% (39.3%). These shifts are basically negligible in polling.

Meh. People are leaving both parties, but young people are absolutely breaking Democratic by a pretty wide margin.
People under the age of 30 who have voted early favor Democrats by 30 points, according to TargetSmart’s model. Similarly, a Harvard Youth poll out today shows Biden’s advantage with voters 18 to 29 has slightly increased since September, to 63 percent support compared to 25 percent for Donald Trump. And 63 percent of respondents said they will “definitely be voting,” leading Harvard to predict that 2020 could rival 2008.

Of course young people are voting Democrat. Big tech censors speech. They read one narrative in the most popular politics sub on reddit. Reddit banned the Trump sub. Every popular celeb from hollywood to sports endorses them. Activating people is different from people moving away from a party. So even if people that use to identify as Dems leave you can still initiate a bunch of young morons and it will be no problem.

The core of modern conservatism is dishonesty. and violence.
Trump will declare victory on election night, and will attempt to nullify as many votes as possible through court challenges, in an outright fascist power grab. He will decry any state that continues to count votes as being rigged.
He will hunker down at the whitehouse and will promote outright violence. The right-wing in this country will answer that call, when the left comes out to protest the power grab.
