The Spurs' Tim Duncan is stepping away from full-time coaching after spending last season on the bench on Gregg Popovich's staff, @NYTSports (https://twitter.com/NYTSports/) has learned

San Antonio's internal belief was always a one-year stint on the bench for Duncan, who is expected to return to his previous post-retirement role in which he made frequent appearances at the team's practice facility to provide various Spurs with player development assistance

Well, that's sad but unsurprising. Suddenly there's a lot of coaching vacancies on the Spurs.... And this solidifies Becky as #1 lead for HC after Pop's done.

Figured that would happen, it was awesome seeing Duncan on the bench again but it was weird too

Fuck! I was secretly hoping he would be the next head coach.

we'll always have that game against the hornets where he led the team to a win.

1-0 as head coach all time.

This doesn't mean he won't be.

Timmy will be around the team. Just has enough interests outside of b-ball to not want to be tied down to it most of the year.

imagine he doesn't want Corona virus either. The bubble worked okay but the next season is gonna get some coaches sick and why coach if you don't need to/want to

Ok, Manu you got next or TP maybe.

Why was Timmy always considered a one year stint? Any thoughts there.

Because Timmy can do whatever the fuck he wants!

I'm guessing he was trying it out for a year to see if he liked it. I also believe COVID caused him not to want to do it again this upcoming season. The NBA is going to have a messed up travel schedule if they don't play in a bubble so I'm sure Tim wasn't down with that. I know he also would not be down with going to a bubble.

It was presumed to be Pop’s last season, and with the loss of Pop’s wife, TD probably wanted to be there for a friend. That’s been my assumption.

Good for Timmy tbh.

COVID likely a factor. When it’s finally over he may be back..

1-0 lifetime.
And started Brent Forms. :lmao

Glad he's no longer continuing coaching with Grandpas influence around.

Undefeated as a HC :toast

Raise your hand if you didn't see that coming. That one sequence with Tim and Becky looking at each other because Pop was screwing up and wouldn't listen was enough. But it wasn't the only thing.

Darn, I really wanted to see Tim come back next season to coach :(.

It felt like a test drive for Duncan to see if he wants to be a head coach one day. Try it for a year and come back when Pop retires.

So who do y’all want to fill that assistant spot? Someone returning like Brett Brown or Boylen? Or someone new like Atkinson, D’Antoni, or someone else?

D’Antoni joined Nash in Brooklyn.

That’s kinda what I thought, too. If you watched closely, he wasn’t even on all of the road trips. He’s got three kids, and I don’t ever see him wanting to be a HC, at least not until all of his kids are grown.

Another notch in his belt to prove he's better than Kobe and Shaq

Sean would have Globetrotter trick basketballs, Oriental Ladies' Nights at the AT&T, and Bruce Bowen pinatas as halftime. The Spurs would definitely be fun to watch again.

If I had to guess (and I do) I think that's probably pretty much the truth of it. Mostly I just think it's odd that he waited this long to say he's not going for a second year.

Sean has the Tommy Heinsohn gig, doubt he will ever give that up.

I've posted it before, but Roy Rogers could be a candidate to replace Tim. Former player, started his coaching career in Austin, I think he could be the dude.

I just hope it's not Boylen. Don't need him taking over a game and forgetting to put his best players back in games like last time.

I'm on board with Becky as the next coach. Seems like the obvious candidate unless Bill Self rumors reemerge, but those rumors always seemed ridiculous to me.

I know that I'm probably just reading the tea leaves too much now, but could this be a sign Aldridge is on his way out?

TD was a big reason LMA came to the Spurs. And they still work together on a developmental basis.

The Warriors definitely seem to have interest in LaMar, and that would be a good destination to send him if they want to keep him happy...we'll see if it's not just smoke.

Reckon Tim will still mentor players and by stepping down he'll be giving someone a pay check he doesn't need.

A female Head Coach would solidify my worry that coaching has become obsolete in today's NBA

God, I miss TD’s antics if you can call them that. Eyes popping out, mouth agape as he pleads his case that the didn’t commit a foul. Besides being a winner, a HOFer and my favorite player all time, I’ll always remember TD as the dude who never committed a foul.
