Friendly neighborhood tech nerd here. If there are any of my friends who are considering Parler, I'd like to share a couple of thoughts. The platform has never released a list of its owners and is not actively seeking VC investment, despite having no revenue model and an active staff of 30. Estimate it costs $1-$2 million per month to operate, which is being paid for by someone.
The verification process (to make sure you are not a troll) requires an upload of the front and back of your DL. That creates a pretty healthy honeypot for hackers as such credentials are useful for identity theft. Also, since a large number of Parler users seem to be trending to violent rhetoric, it attaches their calls for violence or other potential evidence to their verified account and DL.
Finally, while we don't know who owns it, or who is funding it, one of the largest user groups prior to October was loyalists to the Saudi Crown Prince. This suggests that funding is likely foreign entity driven. My support for global economics aside, it seems like a combination that does not mesh with the beliefs of the people joining and continues a trend line of technology-enabled US political influence by foreign groups or intelligence services.
