He's not my first choice, timvp[/b[. I'd rather 'Kandi, Odom or PJ.

But he can draw Shaq away from the basket with his jumpshot and I read the front office likes that.

The drawbacks to Rasho is that he doesn't seem all that focused or aggressive.

And I don't want a center who looks disinterested or lost out there.

And as far as bodying up Shaq — fuggeddaboutit.

I'd much rather have Kandi, but I do think both have some upside, as goofy as that sounds.

"But he can draw Shaq away from the basket with his jumpshot"

.............because that strategy worked sooooooo well for the Mavs with Raef.

Do you guys hate Rasho all together?

Or just hate him for a price?

For example, if he came for $4-5M, would that be cool?

coz
07-11-2003, 08:04 PM
I choose #1

altogether.

I hate him altogether.. and I'm being honest. I don't think he is even worth 4-5 mil.

ChumpDumper
07-11-2003, 08:13 PM
I think he might be able to learn to defend the post better in SA -- but I'm much more comfortable with Kandi in that respect.

OTOH, if he injures Kobe every year, I'm down.

timvp

For $4M, I could live with it.

Barely.

Archie

$4 mil is better than $8 mil to the Kandi man.

As an aside, Jamal Sampson was waived yesterday.

He can take Donny Marshall's spot at the RMR.:drunk

I don't think $4-5M is too much for him. We'll see how this pans out.

I would pay $8 million a year for Olowokandi before I would pay $5 million a year for Nesterovic.

Rasho violates my player recruitment rules #2 and #4. These rules apply to drafts, trades, and free agency. I will post them here, for the first time ever. :lol

Admiral's 5 Rules For Player Recruitment

1. Team chemistry trumps everything. Any potential move must pass the team chemistry litmus test. This somewhat relates to rule #3, but it does not matter how talented a player is if he does not address team needs. Trading for or signing someone you don't really need, position wise, is a foolish move for two reasons. One, it creates unnecessary tension and competition between two talented players. You never know what kind of locker room problems can come as a result of that. Two, it still does not address the void at other positions in the lineup.

The most talented team in the league almost never wins the title. Your reason why can be found in chemistry.

2. Never, ever obtain a tall white guy. They almost always suck. The only reason they are in the NBA is because they are tall. They are usually slow and lack aggressiveness down low. They can usually shoot jumpers respectably, and that's it. This rule applies no matter how good they appeared to be in college or overseas.

3. Background matters. Most players with legal trouble or attitude problems never grow out of it. Yes, there are success stories from time to time, but there are many more failures. You see it all the time - a team signs or trades for a player with a checkered past, and they think that it's going to be different when he is on their team. They think that they have the perfect coach or the perfect philosophy for him. It rarely happens.

4. Proceed with caution when it comes to foreign players. Several years ago, NBA scouts discovered some talent overseas that had flown under the NBA radar. Now everyone's on the bandwagon, and many foreign players are overhyped. Be careful.

5. Do not trade big for small. There is a reason why basketball is called a tall man's game. If two players are of equal talent at their respective positions, go with the bigger player (unless he's white; see rule #2). This is also assuming that rule #1 is fulfilled.

i've just never been impressed with his game, but if they have to sign him, no more than $4mil please.

Sounds like you want PJ, according to your rules Admiral.

Didn't PJ win some sort of NBA citizenship award a few years back? He's got Spur written all over him.

Admiral

I wouldn't mind P.J. Brown, Guru. I would rather have Olowokandi at this point, but Brown would not be bad either.

Odom is talented, but he would be an even bigger risk than Mourning. I don't have any confidence that he can lay off the drugs and stay healthy long enough to make it worth the investment.

What about you, Guru? Which available free agent tops your current list?

Archie
07-12-2003, 12:47 AM
Guru,

Apparently that's been erased and replaced with "Hornets."

Admiral
07-12-2003, 12:53 AM
So who is left?

Michael Olowokandi
Brad Miller
Lamar Odom
Corey Maggette
Alonzo Mourning
Rasho Nesterovic

Who else is still an uncommitted free agent that would be a candidate to come here (please don't list Antonio Daniels)?

Let's be honest here- other than Elton Brand- who the Spurs don't even have the moxy to meet with, let alone sign to an offer-sheet- there is nothing out there. Let's not pretend that this was a deep free agent class that allows the Spurs many options. The Spurs need size in order to have a legitimate chance of beating a now-stacked Laker squad whose only obstacle might be keeping Kobe Bryant away from young children.

Optimism is great and it shows loyalty to your team, but right now it's time to call a spade a spade. Essentially the Spurs have Rasho Nesterovic or Michael Olowokandi to fill the aforementioned requirement in order to compete in the West. Unfortunately, neither player in my opinion is worth offering a contract to, sadly enough. At this point, only the miracle signing of Brand or Brad Miller- both likely to remain with their current clubs can save the Spurs' offseason. P.J. Brown would be a nice fit for sure- but his signing begs two questions- who plays center? And what do we do with Malik Rose?

If I was forced to choose between dog crap and camel crap, I guess I'd go with Olowokandi, but anyone with half a basketball IQ knows that this guy's an idiot off the court and an uninspired lazy bitch on it.

I say keep the cash and go after either Garnett or Brand next year.

So who is NO LIMIT advocating we pursue now that P.J. Brown has agreed to stay with the Hornets? If you don't like Olowokandi, then who?

Please no! I'd give Olowokandi the freaking max before I'd throw $7 - $8 million at Rasho. I hope all this is is a way for the Spurs to try to keep Kandi's price down.
