We are primed to be the Suns without Amare.

We might win a few games

Keldon is still growing and packing it nicely. He could very well be Amare

Have yall seen a quote from Patty saying it is time for him to be who he is on his national team?

Does that concern anyone?

It sounds like he thinks offense is about to run through him.

It actually doesn't sound too bad to me. We want to trade the vets, and get a good return, and the easiest way to do that is showcasing them on offense before the deadline to entice other teams into giving assets up for them. I will be vomiting in my mouth slightly every time Patty takes a pull-up 3, but... I'll believe for now that it's a short-term suffering for long-term gains.

Now, if Patty keeps being a ball-hog and isn't traded by the deadline, then yeah, we can talk about concern.

Thanks for the post. That's a good sign Luka is starting to be more aggressive. I rather see Luka taking Eubanks minutes
Regarding Aldridge staying more in the perimeter. I like him taking those shots, but he still needs to establish the paint early, especially on smaller defenders

Thanks Dejounte for those practice updates! These quotes sound VERY promising & hopeful for at least a interesting & competitive season for the Spurs! It's good to know that the youth are inspiring & injecting energy into the vets to be more competitive, especially for LMA, whom I am the most concerned about going into this new style of play this season, especially with his mindset of him wanting to have a key role of scoring, as well as to be an impact in a given game within the new system. BUT, we will see when it will start to matter when the regular season begins. Confidence & chemistry equals good personal & team rhythm with the outcome of wins. Sounds like they are on the right path! GSG!!!

that's the whole reason of locking him up for 3 years. If he can add moves on offense he's more than worth it

It's actually amazing :lmao you can tell the chemistry is much better than the "coffee gang" dark days, and everyone can push themselves and others to work harder and earn their spot, instead of having no-accountability defensive sieves being gifted minutes over young prospects. I like these Spurs a hell of a lot better than last years', tbh...

As much talent as he has, and as few opportunities as he’s received, I’d be looking elsewhere, too. It’s unfathomable that he fucking destroyed Houston almost single handedly, a MONSTER break out game, and then sat for most of the rest of the season.

I love the pic of his dribbling form. When I played the ball was supposed to be below the waist. He's dribbling above his head. I hope improved handles are part of this new maturity.

Kelley is joining the Spur’s on an Exhibit 10 deal, which means that while he has an invite to training camp, he still has work to do to earn a two-way deal that will keep him in the Spurs’ system past 60 days. Knowing this, the seven-foot-tall 23-year-old is ready to hit the ground running.

I should've been clearer - yeah, I was criticizing the particular choice of book, not the general idea. "El Alquimista" is infamous in the literature circles, it's literally a crappy self-help book disguised as a novel, with the recurring theme that "if you want something, the Universe will bend over to provide you with it". lefty20 hit the nail on the head. I thought it was a funny/weird recommendation, especially given Pop's philosophy. The book is hardly more than allegorical cliché.

Also, I don't think Lonnie is particularly novice in regards to reading, FWIW. I've seen a lot of pictures of him reading while on Spurs facilities/at home, and he usually quotes a variety of books when uploading photos to social media. I definitely would be giving that particular book to Dejounte though :lol

Positives:

-Devin looks like a legit 2 way impact player
-KBD is a solid pick up
-Tre is also a solid PG

Negatives:
-Terrible defense by DeMar, Rudy, Mills, LMA
-Mills running the point is a total shitshow
-Luka looks slow, doesn't seem to know how to play any offense, bad defensive principles
-Disappointing show by Lonnie

If the idea is to build confidence, perhaps that's what Lonnie needs. Murray certainly doesn't. But someone who purports to have as much worldly knowledge as Pop should know better than to assign a player a vapid, shallow book.

I really loved Devin Vassell's play. Really excited and happy to have him on the team. I think I am going to love his game. His instincts on defense have me very excited.

Lonnie, really terrible. I hope the guy gets it together as I had very high hopes for him. I just don't know if it's a weak mental game with him or what? He's got the tools, but I don't know if it's just more playing time he needs, or if it's all mental and he can't grasp it, (hopefully it's 'grasp it yet' and not 'never').

Mills, not impressed with his chucking. He's still awful at running an NBA offense. I mean it's the same thing for me in regard to Patty since about 2016 - even if he hits shots, all the other negative stuff he does like being a sieve on defense and being terrible running the point, it just doesn't make up for it IMO. He's just an undersized chucker and even if the shots are going in, he doesn't do much else out there to warrant the court time IMO, and when the shots don't go in, he's just a huge negative. Great guy, but I'd still like him off the team.

Dejounte, I was a huge fan of his potential because of his defense a couple of years ago had me excited for his future, but just not sure about him anymore. I much prefer a confident Derrick White over him any day of the week running the point, and I also prefer Derrick's overall game on offense and defense. Derrick will be starting at PG, right? Also, I am a bit worried, I thought I head Sean or Bill say Derrick had surgery on his toe? If so, was it just a minor thing that won't keep him out too long?

The surgery should be the one he did towards the end of the season which seems a bit worrisome as it's been some time. If it's a different one then I would be super worried.

Lol damn forgot about him but yeah he is a keeper but I mentioned in another thread that I am worried about his foot issues. It seems every season he is missing time for some sort of foot injury and foot injuries are issues that can end your NBA career.

As far as Walker I feel ya GA I am just being Debbie downer cause it is Sunday and I am dreading going to work tomorrow but that is another story. I really wanted Walker to improve because we need him and we need to start drafting other positions like SF and PF so hoping he figures it out but yeah it ain’t looking good.

I don’t want him gone, but I no longer see him as anything than a complementary player. He did well in the bubble, because the ball moved. Last night, it was stagnant, so he did poorly. He won’t do well just waiting on kick outs from DD, LMA, or Rudy. If the ball is moving, he gets good shots, or driving opportunities against the grain of the defensive rotation.

The disappointing parts of Lonnie's game for me was his looking terrible on team defense and communicating on switches. Lonnie has too many moments where he is the common denominator on defensive hiccups. He also didn't seem to put much effort into blocking out.

That bothers me more than whether he was assertive on offense.

Luka’s issue was always going to be attitude and mental chops. He’d either show them, and shine, or crash otherwise. He’s got a ton of talent, but then so does almost the entire NBA. I’d say he’s on the clock this year to show out better, or he won’t get his year 4 option picked up, or perhaps he’ll get flipped in a trade.

Could be the angle, but he looks taller than Cam Reynolds who is listed as 6'7".

Just draft a power forward (Scottie Barnes looks good...) next year or sign Giannis (still hasn't extended his contract with the Bucks) and call it a day next offseason.

I think the LMA + Poetl line-up is out of necessity. We are short on guard/ wing players, so it makes sense to spread those minutes to big line-ups. That, in combination with easing in the new players slowly is why it's happening.

3, 2, 1.... for all the people who will look at game 2 and cry that the sky is falling.

Blaming Mills for doing what he is supposed to do. Lol.

He's not running the offense because that's not his role nor within his capabilities.

And it comes as a shock to some of you seasoned fans. Whoa.

People flamed Parker for the same thing for two decades.

Dude wasn't built like or expected to be a true point guard, yet people spent year after year shitting on his HOF career.

Think back to the Bubble, where Lyles and Aldridge were out and we had to play small...

Now, think of the opposite effect, where Keldon, Q, and White are all out... we have to play big.

Is the logic making sense?

As a coach, when your players come back from the offseason, wouldn't you want to see if LMA is still in good shape to play after his injury? Wouldn't you like to see if Poetl added anything to his game?

I get that we want to see Luka a bit more. But he sure as hell disappointed when he was out there for a full quarter of play against the Thunder... It was atrocious. If he played more minutes than he played, it would have went from 'atrocious' to 'downright depressing'.

On the contrary I would like to see how Luka would respond to real competition, even if it's just pre-season. His "atrocious" performance could very well just be jitters, and will only get better with more playing time imo

I don’t buy it. Basketball is basketball. I’ve played with people who barely spoke English. Attitude is another, regardless if you speak fluently or not, the feeling of camaraderie, of belongingness. The point is he needs to play with them more which should help a lot.

Excited for the start of the season!

FWIW Memphis, according to the broadcasters; were leading the pre season in pace and have somewhat resembled the Spurs bubble team. Memphis will be starting Kyle Anderson at PF it seems, which would allow the Spurs to start DDR there if they wish.
Not a huge fan of that move long term, but have a feeling the starting unit may be in-flux until the team is whole.

Some final thoughts from the media that echoes some of the sentiments on the forum:

https://twitter.com/KevinOConnorNBA/status/1339629134876651520?s=20

22. San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs are facing a crossroads, and they can use this season to determine what path they want to go down and who they want coming with them. Can Dejounte Murray learn how to run an offense? (So far this preseason, the answer is still no.) Or will Derrick White remain the steadier option at point guard? Can Lonnie Walker IV find any level of consistency? Can Devin Vassell or Keldon Johnson pop on offense? The Spurs have lots of young talent to take them into the 2020s, but now it’s a matter of figuring out who the centerpieces are.
One issue is playing time, since the Spurs have too many old dudes earning heavy minutes for a team that should be focused on development. DeMar DeRozan, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rudy Gay, and Patty Mills are all in their 30s and will all be unrestricted free agents next offseason; perhaps some of them could be flipped ahead of the trade deadline to recoup some value and open minutes for some of their young players. That assumes there would be teams interested in acquiring DeRozan or Aldridge as a rental, but in the playoff race, teams always get needy.

Agree that everyone knows what Wiggins was. I’m still amazed the smart Warriors got tricked into thinking he could be anything more.

Way too early to pass judgment in Wiseman, but he comes with a high cap hit too given draft slot. Effectively paying $40mm per year to the two of them. It’s almost certainly better to take your chances with spending that space elsewhere and drafting later. Wiggins destroys any team’s flexibility.

Wiseman could turn out really nice, but he’s not the kind of guy you bet the entire farm on.
