Game Thread: 2020 Preseason Game 1 - Thunder @ Spurs - Dec 12th, 2020 @ 6 PM CT

After the shortest and weirdest offseason in Spurs history, the Silver & Black return to the AT&T Center for the first time since March 10th.

They'll be facing off with an Oklahoma City Thunder squad which will look drastically different from their last meeting. The Thunder surprised a lot of people last season by making the playoffs, but they've lost their leader in Chris Paul as well as long-time Viking Steven Adams. OKC is loaded with draft picks and looks pretty secure for the future, but unless those draft picks can find a way to put on sneakers, they aren't expected to be in the mix of competitors this season.

This will be the first chance we'll have to see how the Spurs' play from the bubble transfers over to this new season, and get a glimpse of the fast-paced offense they have been talking about all training camp. It will be interesting to see how LaMarcus fits into the mix since he didn't play in the bubble due to shoulder surgery. We will also hopefully get our first glimpses of the new rookies, and see if some of the sophomores like Luka or Weatherspoon are looking to take the next step.

Tbh, I'm mostly mad that it seems Pop is still stuck in his old ways (and yes, I know this should come as no surprise). Overtrusting Mills and playing him in a role he's not fit for, over young players who are (yes, Jones is a rookie, but so is Vassell and there he was, playing); overusing old vets who won't be on the team next season (let's hope); that sort of stuff. I can appreciate him playing Vassell early, KBD is a wash since I can't see Pop trusting him long term. Overall, it just reeks too much of last season's Spurs for my liking, TBH.

E: of course, we'll see what he does when White and Keldon are ready. This isn't a season-long condemning (though I'm definitely less hopeful now than I was yesterday).

Lonnie is a great guy. Great athlete. Meh basketball player (by NBA standards). He's so athletic but can't play. It reminds of when some NFL team gets a track star to play wide receiver because he's so fast. But the guy can't run routes, catch or get off the line so all that speed is wasted.

The defense is meh, but the attitude is even more concerning. The way they gave up those two offensive boards near the end of the 2nd quarter, that was nothing short of lazy.

At least Vassel's looking good. Also, Gay does what he can do (scoring with suspect defense) as advertized.

3) LMA taking more threes
4) Patty yapping that here’s going to play like his international self.
5) Murray spending more time in the weight room.
6) Walker trying to improve finishing.
7) DeMar with a chip on his shoulder because of the disrespect of ESPN ranking him so high on their top players list.

So far... LMA has taken a lot more threes. Everything else is lip service.
