Southgate is a scared manager.
England derserved to lose. They curled up in the fetal position the second half on. Mancini made a key substitution upfront and no answer.
Total lack of guts. England is afraid to lose so they can’t win. Need to try a foreign manager with testicles.
Good job by the Italians staying patient after the sub and Mancini rearrangement up front. That’s the confidence of a team not afraid of the moment. So many back passes or lateral safe passes by England until they just pinned themselves back. At home with one of their best midfields in a long while. Chellini dominated Kane in the air, especially 2nd half, Kane could bring nothing down and hold to pass which he can be deadly at.
The Italians deserved this one. Possibly not against Spain though.

67 might seem like an arbitrary cutoff since england won the 66 wc, but that was the last world cup with no cards and no subs. 66 back, you could repeatedly commit hard fouls without fear of ejection, injure the other teams players and they couldn't sub on a healthy player. 62 and 66 are famous for being bloodbaths, 66 was so egregious changes were made...

I don't think Southgate had any racial motives. That would be absurd. Rashford I understand. He has buried kicks in big games. Though I am still not a fan of bringing him on cold. Sano and Saka are real head scratchers when there is Grealish and Sterling. Seriously, why does Southgate seem to have it in for Grealish? I thought the not playing him was a byproduct of conservatism. But now I legit think he wanted to win without making him the hero. What has Sano and especially Saka ever shown that they shoul be the four and five kickers? That's fucking insane!

He raped Kane as well. Kane could not adjust.
Good defender who knows how the refs call these things.
There is an easy solution to this.
ANY arm out and grab FROM BEHIND automatic red ANYWHERE on the field.
So easy to implement and would get rid of these so called "professional fouls"
Hell of a lot easier to call than hand balls in the box.
Soccer football started like rugby, and now it has come such a long way to make the sport clearly different and they cant implement such an easy rule. I like rugby as well, and I like it because it is NOT soccer and vice versa.
That being said...
Fingers crossed that the British Irish Lions v. South Africa test series takes place in South Africa. The Lions have done an extraordinarily good job of not getting Covid. Hope the South African national team does the same. The Lions already had to cancel a warmup match against one of the local SA clubs because their team just fell ill. Did not have enough players.
This series is extraordinarily good. Some of the most physical rugby on the planet. The English and the South African dutch have some history and it makes this rivalry fantastic. I want to see one of the games in the future.
For soccer I want to catch as many of the following as I can:
Just need to make sure they check for weapons before entry.
Rangers v. Celtic
West Ham v. Millwall
River Plate v. Boca Juniors
Palermo v. Catania
Red Star v. Partizan
If I had to choose 1, it would be Ranger v. Celtic (religious overtones)

And make it like rugby where they have eyes on cameras to catch stuff the ref cannot possibly see.
Once those red cards prove the point, you wont get shit that slows the game down. This is not basketball where you score every damn possession and have so many fouls to give, its ridiculous how chopped up US sports are so WE can get commercials in. Continuous play is something the rest of the world has figured out. Im starting to walk away from US sports because I dont want to spend 5 damn hours on a game when I could be exercising and playing myself.

As a casual soccer fan, I watched the Danish game where Eriksen collapsed and nearly died. That was bananas. Didn't catch a match until the final. Thought that the conservative approach by England was their downfall, but from someone who admittedly doesn't follow the sport, what happened to the "Golden Goal" extra time rule. Or, was that never a thing? The WC is in December next year? Qatar? Makes sense. Playing outside in that heat would undoubtedly lead to more Eriksen type situations.

You fought Hitler from Britain most effectively during the Nazi air campaign in WWII. Not so good on the ground, you got blitzed.
The polish could barely get the planes back in one piece because landing and taking off was so pitiful, but with a Spitfire they did a great job at killing Germans. Very brave blokes they became after their country was totally overrun.

NOW you put Shaw in...
Bottlehead...
You wont admit you had no idea what he did for Man U along with Maguire.
Relative to who they chose, I put Shaw in (as one of six, so not even necessarily in). And I put him in because that's explicitly one of the four names in addition to Kane and Maguire that Craig stated.
Would Shaw have made my five? Probably not; but I haven't seen him take PKs, so that's not completely fair. What I would think I would like about him is that he would hit the ball with pace and go for a spot unlike the trash that was England's last two kicks. But I don't think his aim is especially great. But even if he was more middle, I think he might have got some height on the ball. Or if he stayed on ground, he would've at least sent it with pace as I said. But again, based on his passing, I think there's some potential accuracy issues there.
Sterling is very capable of hitting a corner low. It's kind of his thing. You only worry about the goalkeeper guessing the right direction.
Grealish has taken penalty kicks in the EPL. I don't know his percentage; but I've seen what he can do as a sniper from other areas on the field.
To me, he's a no brainer over (cold) Sano and Saka.
Stones I suspect is decent. Those big centerbacks tend to have that card in their pocket. Maybe a concern for a guy not regularly taking strikes though?
Back to Shaw, I never came out and said I'm all against Shaw (though his silly foul did cost England their clean sheet streak). I said that he along with Sterling in buildup play was leaving something to be desired at times. Overall, they did okay though and had their moments; so I desisted; it wasn't a drum I wanted to keep beating. I can't argue with Southgate's continued use of him. Though he was looking gassed in the Italy game unlike games prior. I think he is probably one of the guys who should've been subbed out in the second half.

UK To Ban Online Racists From Soccer Games
U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson says the government plans to ban anyone guilty of online racist abuse from soccer matches (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/uk-to-ban-online-racists-from-games-after-euro-2020-uproar) as authorities continue to respond to the lawlessness connected to England's loss in the final of the European soccer championship. Johnson on Wednesday told lawmakers that it was time to act after three Black members of England's national team were targeted by racist abuse on social media after they failed to score during the penalty shootout that sealed the team's loss to Italy on Sunday night. The government plans to add online racism to the list of offenses for which fans can be barred from matches, he said.
"What we are doing is taking practical steps to ensure that the football banning regime is changed so that if you are guilty of racist abuse online on football, then you will not be going to the match," Johnson said during his weekly prime minister's questions session. "No ifs, no buts, no exemptions, no excuses." Courts are allowed to issue banning orders if a fan is convicted of a "relevant offense" linked to a match, including crimes such as disorderly behavior or possession of weapons.

You kinda deserve this if you're stupid enough to post racist shit on a twitter/FB/insta account with your real name on it.
That's pretty much the only way they could find these people, right? I doubt they're gonna get a judge to sign a warrant ordering social media sites to release IP addresses of the offending accounts.

England has very different rules towards hate speech on the internet and at games.
They throw people out of stadiums and ban them for life in some cases.
When gangs get together and plan fights online they will punish them.

Again though, I'm not saying playing Shaw was an absolute no brainer; just that they made it work.
At this point, I think not incorporating Grealish was the big mistake. I don't have any proof; but I can only explain it that there must be enmity between Southgate and Grealish.

I have some ideas on this one.
Grealish was a bit of a joker. Example:
Phil Foden (young guy bit of a hot head) was given shit about not winning the champions league in a sideways manner in front of Jordon Henderson (a leader on the English team who had won the title with Liverpool) by Grealish putting Henderson in an akward position and pissing Foden off. I think Grealish pulled a number of things like this around the boys, trying to see who had hard feelings kinda jock thing that goes on all the time on these types of teams. imo Southgate did not like Grealish and the joking. Southgate was all for unity and respect.
Derp.
If you dont know something then shut up.
Calling me a fan boy from Shaw when Man U helped knocked Tottenham out of the top 4 (they did not deserve it anyway).
I dont root for Man U, but at least I can see when something works on this team. I WATCH their games. I have a friend from England who dies for them so I have to be at least educated enough to give him some shit when they lose and be in the ballpark in the assessment. You are not harsh on me, you are just stupid.
Your rule is blind loyalty and ignorance.
Do you know this is a sports board?
Grealish definitely has an attitude. But there is no doubting his level of skill and the creativity he could have brought to the team, especially uninjured and fully fit.

It's perhaps something like this or just not liking big egos and hot dogs in general.
I don't think it's very rational though. Just about everyone and their dog was wondering why no Grealish, especially for the start of the final.

I totally agree.
I love to watch the guy play.
I really wish he did not get hurt. That last game he played in the PL was so that he would get picked. He did not show the same movement he had before he was injured.
Hopefully he does not get lost on Manchester City if he gets picked up like poor Lefty's Mahrez did his first year. You go to a team like that and you have got to work your ass off. Sometimes I like these players to play on lesser teams because they are really allowed a lot of freedom to create, and not fear getting pulled.

Grealish had some majestic and timely goals for Aston Villa. At 25 and heading into a monster transfer, this was his time to shine.
I hate to see a national team manager pulling this sh** (making it personal).
Not the same situation, but Jurgen Klinsmann got butthurt about Landon Donovan and arrogantly left him of the 2014 WC squad.
It probably cost us a quarterfinal appearance. We had Wondo kicking the ball over the bar from mere feet away instead of Donovan doing what he does and burying the big shot.
And even if we had kept a deserving Wondo on the squad, it was really sad watching a very limited Brad Davis instead of an all-time and extremely capable LD in action.
Even the Julian Green selection was a serious slap in the face. These things happen when personal pride trumps merit.

Eddie Johnson too. He was our main striker besides Altidore (and Dempsey). He was money in qualifying. Klinsmann didn't like him being a hot shot though.
And Altidore pulled his hammy in the first twenty minutes of the first game and instead of having a backup striker, we were left with an auxiliary striker (Dempsey) and a striker (Green) that JK wouldn't even play b/c he had no faith in him and only had him on the team as part of a backroom deal to get him to a WC sooner if he chose USA. Even still, Green over Davies would've left us covered. But JK was our own Southgate and thought his ego was the most important thing.

Long distance runners die all the time, young and old, especially this time of year.
But a famous soccer player almost dies, you immediately assume Covid vaccine.
JUST BECAUSE it involves a famous athlete. Congrats on finding this. Now go back and find all the incidents involving EXACTLY the same problem before the vaccine and make up a story about other vaccines how about.
Do you know soccer and long distance runners keeled over all the time BEFORE the vaccine?

Now back on subject.
Tottenham looked absolutely pitiful in beating Wolves 1-0.
Harry Kane actually came on, had shot on goal but tried to nutmeg the goalie.
Wolverhampton controlled the ball the entire game in an effort and physical nature far and above Tottenham's halfhearted play after losing to some unknown European team in a useless UEFA competition on Thursday. Hopefully they were just trying to drop out early so they dont have to waste what little depth they have when it comes to more important competitions like the actually league and the FA cup.
