He fits well if they play at this pace. The problem is when the game slows down and he needs to run a halfcourt offense.

The whole team plays better with higher tempo. Problem ist that Gay and LMA are both slowing the game down. (even though gay did well in the bubble).
I hope both of them are capable of making the adjustment in the long term.

Makes it tough for the opponent to key in when you've got 5 players with 9 points or more.

Vassell +16. Who cares if he isn't scoring if everyone else is while he's on the court. He doesn't need to have stats to have an impact.

Don't tell Chinook (https://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=37557) that. He thinks it won't work.

I don't think it's sustainable, no. Weren't you the one going at folks for having quick reactions? I do think Memphis playing small allowed the Spurs to play small in return. I doubt Pop would've gone for this had JJJ been in the lineup. My guess is Walker would've been on the bench and Vassell would've gotten 10th-man minutes.

I don't think this is a quick reaction on my part... I've long believed this would be the result, and it's all coming to fruition now. It was a slow burn to get here. It's anything but quick.

It's a quick reaction to say who's right based on one half. My concerns are A) Its effectiveness against bigger lineups and B) the overall wear and tear that playing small every game will have on the players. Johnson MIGHT be able to be a four for the whole year, but I'm more than a little skeptical he won't end up tired out or injured in a few months. Playing big is hard on the body, and Johnson should be doing more on offense than a guy like Battier did.

True, I mean, I wouldn't mind an alternating line-up this season the way MLB teams do when they change their pitcher every game. It's probably smart to do it this season given the bizarre schedule.

You mean all the Austrians? Pop doesn't. He's immeasurably better than Poeltl on offense. His defense is on par with Poeltls. He hits his free throws. He's actually someone that has to be guarded which opens up spots for others.

Right, the guys thinking that Lyles won't return to the rotation or will go without an opportunity to are being delusional.

He'll need to prove that his play after January (last season) is sustainable or he'll likely be just a stopgap player. Which would apparently make ST super happy, I guess.

This. Against teams that play bigger, you need more of both and Lyles will play more. Probably takes minutes from people other than Demar, as he’ll slide back to the 3.

I don’t think he can spell the 5 in big stretches, though probably are looking at some Lyles minutes in games Aldridge or Poeltl are out.

In terms of rotations, it’s such a relief to be deep this year and have to worry about finding people minutes as opposed to having to watch Forbes and Beli get trotted out there.

Weren't you one of those 6-8ers who kept insisting that DMDR was too small to play the three a year ago? Maybe you weren't, but I think you were one of the folks clamoring for more size for defensive purposes. That you are so far on the other end now that you think one half of play is worth declaring victory over is amazing. The league didn't change in a year. Maybe the folks whose opinions are whiplashing should reconsider if they might be overshooting right now.

He's exploiting his athleticism to create open shots for others. LOVE that part of his game, it definitely wasn't there when he was playing in Austin. If he puts it all together (big IF, I know) and learns how to finish himself and balance it with creation for others.... Sky's the limit.

Um, have you not read all the reports and stories about young players suffering severe injuries because of over training in their adolescents?

If anything it behooves Pop and the training/conditioning staff to monitor and work the guys up to a heavier minutes load.

The days of 35+ MPG for most starters in the NBA are done until training improves in the lower levels, IMO.
