View Full Version : Game Thread: Spurs @ Pelicans — Dec. 27th, 2020 - 6:00pm/C
No matter how tonight ends, it's great to see this team not giving up and fighting its way back into this game.
Also, LA's on-off-numbers probably won't look good tonight...

Bro. You can't control mediocrity. Nobody here can. Nobody's happy with losing. You don't need to take it upon yourself to make everybody think the same as you. That's not your job. Everbody realizes the Toronto thing. We don't need to hear it 24/7.

I have no understanding of nba rules at this point in my life. You can dip your shoulder and run a player over and it’s a foul on the player you’re running over. Then you can drive in and jump into the defender for a foul.

Last play wasn't Lonnie's fault. NOLA just defended it perfectly. They were going to give up that Lonnie two and just stayed at the 3 point line. How the fuck do you expect Lonnie to know what to do in a crunch time situation if he's really never been in one? You have to have experiences like that. Its not low IQ. Its a young player undergoing a learning experience. THIS is what needs to happen so that they get better in those situations. Lonnie ran the play as drawn up. No need to argue with him. His real life sucks, that's why he's here obsessing about another team. I'm sorry life failed him so much, but he can still pretend he won those Lakers rings and works in the front office.
I hate saying good loss, but they could have easily folded when the Pels went on that run early in the third. The team has heart and didn’t wilt on a back to back against a physical team.
Neutral court and one team not more rested and I’ll take the Spurs - good barometer of where they are right now.

Again, Jak is a starting center in this league. Sure he's soft at time especially when finishing at the rim but he's solid at everything else offensively and they're better defensively when he's on the court. I really hope they can trade LMA for an asset by the deadline but i doubt it tbh

btb, I wanted the Spurs to win, but like, it's not the worst thing that they lost. They aren't going to have 72 perfect games from their young guys. I didn't like Pop going small down the stretch. I didn't like him not playing Johnson on Williamson more. But NOP is probably a top-three worst match-up for SA's small lineup, and I thought they held their own. That's not bad.
Though maybe people will start to appreciate why it's not sustainable now. I think Johnson struggled in large part because of the fatigue of guarding Zion. Obviously, that's not every PF, but if he's going to be a big offensive piece this season, he probably can't guard fours full time. Doing it two days in a row seemed to have affected his legs, which in turn removed some of his aggressiveness around the rim and caused him to miss shots he had been making. Still a good game overall.
It's funny how many folks were upset about the Spurs not tanking and not having young pieces but they also expect the young pieces SA has to win games against a solid playoff competitor and get mad when they don't.

Refs definitely sucked. The only thing more suspect than the refs are Zion's knees carrying all that weight.

I hate saying good loss, but they could have easily folded when the Pels went on that run early in the third. The team has heart and didn’t wilt on a back to back against a physical team.
Neutral court and one team not more rested and I’ll take the Spurs - good barometer of where they are right now.
Let’s hope White comes back soon as he’d tilt the scale in a game like this.

I really hope that they diversify the offense a bit more when Derrick gets back. Sure, Demar has been fine in the closer role in the bubble and the first 2 games but they've got capable playmakers, especially when Derrick returns tbh.
Murray had a nice little streak, Lonnie is a good playmaker, etc.....all of that took a backseat when Derozan came back even though he was off most of the night.

First, there's a difference between believing a guy could've played a possession better and freaking out like you are.
Second, he's upset at himself for not winning the game. I think the play was for Walker to come off a curl for a three. He and Gay mistimed the pass, which is why Walker was inside the arc after catching it. He tried to find a way to get a three, and he might've missed an open player (I don't know if someone was). Had the play gone off well, it'd've been an opportunity for him to get some real clout and even more shots at being a closer. Sucks that it didn't work out for him.

Stop letting them off the hook. DeMar wasn't exactly hogging the ball and there were plenty of lulls where the young guys just wanted to pass the ball to the next guy and shrug their shoulders.
For the playmaking talents that they maybe might possibly have, they were too scared to make the attempt at showing them tonight.

Lonnie Walker: B-. Aside from that blunder at the end of the game, he did good overall. Stayed aggressive and kept shooting even when he was cold
DeMar DeRozan: D. Didn't pick his spots. Had many miscues. Lost his temper during a crucial part of the game.
Dejounte Murray: C-. So many turnovers during the first half. Your signature sloppy game from last season. Hit some big shots down the stretch and secured the ball better in the second half.
Keldon Johnson: C+. He was passive throughout the first half. Finally started making some noise in the second. His drives aren't as good as I know they can be. Something going on with him mentally? Jitters? Made some big shots down the stretch.
LaMarcus Aldridge: D. For a player being paid as much as he is, you can't just show up at the end of games. And he didn't even show up at the end of this one because Pop didn't play him. Such a major liability.
Rudy Gay: B-. Actually did ok defensively and hit some big shots. Tinker in some stupid plays that he's usually known for.
Patty Mills: B-. There was a stretch where he was playing point guard and the offense became discombobulated. He had a few minutes of good play passing to Poetl. He did OK.
Jakob Poetl: B+. One of Poetl's better games. He was a monster on the defensive end, and he was showing some post-up game chops on offense.
Vassell: C-. Hitting the rookie wall early. Not making the defensive impact we're accustomed to. Can't dribble worth a lick.
Lyles: Inc. Hardly played any

Calling Aldridge a liability on defense isn't accurate. If you watch the game you will see he defended the paint well. The problem was the Spurs gave up that run not from people scoring on Aldridge but from turnovers leading to easy transition buckets. Now they made a run with him on the bench but to say he was getting abused is false.

Loss is a loss, still. And yet, I think this was a good loss. The youngins had a chance to play late, and they were hanging on all the way to the end. Had any of those shots fallen, they might’ve stolen one. And that’s with Ingram going off and the Pels having like a million FTs.

Johnson is strong and all, but it's hard to back down shorter players. Johnson was really wedging himself in there, and his lower center of gravity basically made him immovable. That's why Zion kept trying to spin on Johnson -- Keldon was committed to not being bowled over. Once the Spurs started rotating to catch the spin, Williamson didn't have an easy way to score. Dude's gotta be willing/able to shoot over shorter players or else more teams will guard him that way. Johnson is special, but he's not unique.

Great fight back at the end of the 3rd, just couldn’t close it out.
My observations:
- Lonnie Dubs. impact over the first 3 games can’t be understated. He has been solid and at times spectacular. Most consistent Spur so far perhaps next to...
- Patty Mills. Best stretch of basketball I’ve seen from him in some time. His playmaking in the 2nd quarter was great to see. I know that’s not his role full time, but makes for a dangerous pairing with D. White when he returns.
- KJ is a bad man. Probably the most fun guy to watch on the team at the moment. When he gets the ball and attacks, 1/2 of the time something good happens. Think he will get that up to about 70% by the end of the year.

I wish the Spurs could have traded him in the off-season. Demar, I was happy with the first two games, but again, he got frustrated and taken out again. Will he ever figure it out? When things aren't going his way, he seems to have this loser mentality out there. He let's it all get to him. He doesn't seem like he has the makeup of a winner (he's the exact opposite of Manu when it comes to a winning mentality).

And there it is. The point where you know that your team sucks but you’re in denial and you want to blame officiating on the result of the game. Sitting in your parents’s basement screaming conspiracy.
To be fair Ingram was getting some Harden-esque calls throughout the game. Spurs blew it due to low-IQ play from their supposed leader however.

I can’t control the refs tbh. I learned that when they sent the Rams to the Super Bowl and I spent next 17 hours in revolt until I finally realized that most sports are predetermined.

Darn man, that game fucking sucked. I was going for the Saints as I have been a huge Drew Brees fan ever since he got to New Orleans. I also don't mind the Saints as a team as I was a Rams fan back in the day (Prime Marshall Faulk was probably my favourite player ever, he was just soo smart and skilled out there, and Kurt Warner maybe next, or Drew Brees I'd have as my second or third favourite player), and the Saints beat us fair and square in the playoffs one year were Kurt broke his hand and missed half the season, but came back. The Saints played a hard, tough, physical game. I loved that Rams team, but Mike Martz fucked it all up by being supremely arrogant not caring about turnovers and not focusing on having at least a good defense. I loved the balance they had that year with Dick Vermeil as head coach as he called a lot more running plays for Marshall Faulk and balanced the passing out with a good running game. Needless to say, I do not go for the Rams anymore since they moved to LA and stopped following them when Mike Martz started screwing up the team. I actually became a fan on them the first season they moved to St. Louis as I liked Isaac Bruce's game.
Anyway, that game fucking sucked and I was mad as shit that New Orleans lost. They really should have been in the superbowl that year and Drew Brees should have had a legit chance to win another ring.

I think Ingram was just too big for Lonnie. Ideally that should’ve been Keldon on Ingram and get him out of his game with his peskiness. But Keldon was already doingba great job on Zion. Maybe Pop could’ve used Diop or Eubanks on him.

5 point plays by the refs and no calls when your team gets hammered in the paint is an uphill battle.
Pop needs to get some T’s early. No national TV games. Let it rip Pop. Make it rain
That was a good call by the ref... DeMar undercut zion...he also lost his mind and deserved the tech, he also was rightfully called for a blocking foul...ingram didn't extend his arm...watch the replay... DeMar has a history of losing his mind during games... At crucial times too... We need to hold him accountable for being mentally weak and not coddle him... https://youtu.be/k5F9HHGRh4s

Oh wow, multiple end of game situations? MULTIPLE? Fucking crazy he's not Robert Horry yet then. Yes, bitch, I watched the game, and the play was drawn up to go to Demar and Lonnie ran it as drawn. It was fucking obvious. You seem to be one of the only ones who can't understand this.
Exactly! It was so obvious it was a designed play

I don't see it. He wasn't wedging himself like Chuck Hayes would. His feet were constantly moving while defending him. I'll dig up more defensive possessions later.

That's an atypical possession. You obviously don't wedge yourself into a person facing you up. That'll just lead to a foul call. I'm talking about when Williams tried to post Johnson up (which was by far the most common way Zion operated). Keldon basically locked himself in, full arm bar and wide base, behind Zion. Williamson couldn't back him down then and tried to spin around him to get to the bucket. That worked somewhat, but Poeltl, Gay and even Aldridge to an extent would immediately drop to wall Zion off once he'd committed to a direction. It was a very good gameplan against Zion at this point in his career. But in like a seven-game series, Keldon would fall apart. His legs would be gone after the first few games

I'm a patient man but LA is well past his welcome. I wouldn't even mind losing a few game showcasing him for some distant promise or whatever. Used to love LA and he did some good shit for us. I truly think Pop fucked up a lot of opportunities with him. Still... it's time to bullshit another team into giving us something of valuefor him. LETS DO IT PATFO! Quit being a bitch and come on!!!!!!!!
What good did he do for us? Pout about touches, demanded a trade, then continued to pout and publicly state how much he wants to play for another team?

Such a stupid comment if i ever heard one. You had a 50% chance of beeing right, but in the end it was nothing more than betting on an L.
The Way the game went, it could easily have been a W. Let Keldon and Gay hit their open 3 Pointers and the Spurs win. Far away from the clear L you were talking about.

I said Pop screwed up with him. Part of a player being the best version of himself has quite a bit to do with how the coach decides to coach him. Pop could have put his foot down and made him Option 1B or 2 while still maximizing what he's good at. The HC just let him do all this crap you're talking about.

He was a winning shot just two games ago. He needs to be fed in the post and get him started early. Murray doesn’t do a good job facilitating when Aldridge gets to touch the ball and gets him involved. I’m not a big fan of Aldridge but we need him to score high teens and grab 8+ rebounds.

True, but at least the Lakers won a legitimate championship.
Sure, they didn't deserve James or Davis wanting to play with them, the same way they've never really deserved it, but they did pay a fair price for Davis and had to overcome some significant holes to win.
Granted, it was lucky that the Clippers/Bucks were out of the way and the Heat injured (they wouldn't have beaten them anyway), but that often factors in. What Scumbag pulled is in its own category.
