A recommendation about double-masking by White House advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci isn't receiving any praise from one of the nation's leading experts on COVID-19.

Dr. Michael Osterholm, who leads the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, refuted Dr. Fauci's claim that double-layering would likely make masking "more effective."

"I do not support the idea of two masks," said Dr. Osterholm, who spoke to WCCO Radio's Cory Hepola on Wednesday morning.

Osterholm explained that masks work based on how they fit and their filtration.

"Masks, as they're defined work in two ways. The first is in regards to how that masks fits. How well does it fit around you? It's like swimming goggles. They don't usually leak through the lenses they leak through the seal around your eyes or face," said Osterholm.

Doubling up on masks would likely lead to more harm, than good, when it comes to cloth face masks, or even N95 respirators.

"If you put more of it on, all it does is it impedes the air coming through and it makes it blow in and out along the sides. The fit becomes even less effective," Osterholm said. "Double masking could be a detriment to your protection."

I think Fauci was referring to seeing so many people wear those blue surgical masks that are for larger droplets. this virus clearly benefits from dryer air and possibly can infect with very small droplets. Wearing one of those blue surgical masks all day at work it’s very likely not gonna do it.

from my observation in San Antonio Texas the majority of people wear The blue surgical masks. I think this was what Fauci was referring to. And I don’t think you wanted to go with don’t wear those blue surgical masks, and then people wear nothing. My take, could be wrong. It seems it should be an N 95 and fit very well. The South Koreans have come up with a very good mask that can be altered to fit different faces.

It may also be the New strains actually spread even better in the air rather than the mutation just causing them to bind better to the proper cells. I think this prossibly also started a controversy. In any event this is good, people are starting to understand.

Osterholm seems like he's talking about masks for protecting the wearer while Fauci saying more layers catches more droplets and protects people more from the wearer. Didn't even realize Osterholm had changed his tune on airborne transmission, for the longest time he was arguing it was aerosol transmission spreading COVID and those particles are smaller than any cloth or surgical mask is going to be able to filter.

I went to check out Galaxys Edge in FLA a few weeks ago. Impossible to really social distance there. You just gotta hope the KN95 mask works and IMO it works like a charm for me. I was in close contact with thousands while there and I gotta think some must have been infected. But im clean.
