View Full Version : CVC in talks to buy minority stake in Spurs

"CVC Capital Partners is in talks to buy a minority stake in the San Antonio Spurs at a roughly $1.3bn valuation, in a move that signals how private equity is poised to reshape the ownership structures of National Basketball Association franchises.
...
The team has retained Guggenheim Partners to manage the process, said the people, who were granted anonymity because the matter is private. Guggenheim’s chief executive officer is Mark Walter, who is the controlling owner of baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers."

For those who live in San Antonio, do ya'll believe there's any real chance the city would allow the team to relocate, even down the road to Austin?
With revenue sharing, the only monetary factor for the owners is facilities and ticket holders. From afar neither seem to be an issue... they've always had great attendance dating back to the Hemisphere days.
And a new arena wouldn't be too far afield for the city leaders, especially if relocation was threatened.
Austin is my hometown and I've never lived or really been to San Antonio much, but I'd also stop rooting for them if 'San Antonio' wasn't part of the team name, tbh, Austin Spurs or any other city.

I can absolutely see it happening. A new arena at this point would cost around $700/800mil at least and the city doesn't really have anywhere to put it. Spurs are gonna want a new arena while not paying for it; if they were still contenders I could see the city paying for it, but if the team is still in purgatory when the lease is up I don't see it happening. If it doesn't and Austin/Vegas/etc promise a new state of the art arena they're absolutely gone. COVID only makes it more likely too.

That's the valuation for the entire team. So the Private Equity firm is investing around $200 million.

Twisted_Dawg
02-05-2021, 08:25 AM
Looks like it might be the Holt family trying to sell a portion of their ownership:
"On April 2020, a report surfaced the Spurs ownership group was selling a minority stake in the team.
The ownership group of the San Antonio Spurs is selling a minority stake in the team, people familiar with the matter told Sportico.
The team has retained Guggenheim Partners to manage the process, said the people, who were granted anonymity because the matter is private."

Holts probably trying to raise money for cash flow. I imagine with Covid they are deep in the red
I was about to post message in polish, that "owner of small shops franchise" is about to buy stakes in Spurs, but then I found out that the owner is some sort of fund.
Well, that's not good news to people down in SA.

I wouldn't worry yet. The Holts need to raise cash because Covid, but they still control the team. If covid keeps fans out for the 21-22 season, then I would start to worry.

If the Holts sell to a minority group who wants to move the team, then that’s on them in my opinion. Hopefully not. And yes, too soon to know the stakes. But definitely good to try and find out. The owner kids look like hipsters who had to move back to San Antonio to take over the business. I do wonder how motivated they are to really be owners.

I suspect the team owners don’t make much of a profit off the team during the best of times, so they’re likely bleeding badly now. This is bad news since the only way PE to make money would be a profitable sale of their interest.
Fortunately, we’re moving outside of SA/Bexar County so our taxes won’t be funding any new stadium bullshit. Also, I’m beginning to hate watching the playing style of the “new” NBA, so maybe disinterest will cause me to not care whether the Spurs stay, go or fold. I’m really on the fence right now... may have to start watching ice hockey.

I was under the impression that since the last collective bargaining agreement NBA owners make more money than ever with some shared income from the television rights deals (LA being the largest source), which seems to be the main income source, and so prices for teams has skyrocketed. And so under normal times it is much harder to lose money. Of course, now, during the pandemic, without their additional cut of food and beverage sales from the stadium, that it's worse.
But yeah, you hinted at the taxpayers paying for an arena that the owners basically get to make money off of for pretty much all events that are held there...yeah, it's annoying to me, too. If anyone has better information, let me know.

The city of San Antonio and the Spurs have such a great working relationship that they probably wouldn’t even seriously consider relocation or even moving up to Austin in our lifetime. There is a better chance of building a new downtown arena by 2040 than them possibly consider relocating by 2050 from what I have heard.

Having an arena between the 2 metro areas, say like San Marcus, would bring in season ticket holders from both markets, as they coalesce into 1 market. That wouldn't be bad. Just the traffic. That would have to be fixed.

In the past I would say Austin is a big deal but San Antonio is blowing up. They've done some really nice expansions to River Walk and blown up parks all over city. There's places to bike, run, hike everywhere now. I was recently downtown and so many spots remind me of Austin... particularly king william area. Only thing I'd give Austin is it's closeness to Lake Travis so there's water activities. I guess we have Medina Lake...so I don't know I think they're purposefully trying to make it more like Austin here

Houston became a marquee destination in my eyes during the 2010's when they were able to get two marquee FA's in Dwight Howard and then later on Chris Paul to come down there. You also have to look at it from a player perspective. Houston is the 5th biggest metro in the country, has a large black population, and has a bigger club scene than Austin. All those things are important for the majority of players especially black players.
I have good friend that lives in Dallas, Texas but he has told me he's been to Austin,Houston. He said straight up Houston is on another level when it comes to entertainment than Austin. He also said Austin is your typical college town. I take his word for it.

Austin metro is 2.2 million (29th)
San Antonio metro 2.5 million (24th)
Metro GDP Austin 26 SA 32
Even combined they fall short of Miami, much less NY, LA
Moving to Austin will not change much.
It's hard to know where things are headed. Since 1980 only two cities significantly outside the top 10 metro areas has won a title.

Moving to Austin might make sense for corporate relations. A lot of tech companies are here, so that could make for some good money from luxury boxes and advertisements. It's certainly not a free-agent destination, though.
That said, as an Austinite, I would prefer for SA to keep the Spurs and have a North SA arena. That way, the team is close enough to attend games but far enough to where it doesn't affect my city's taxes or traffic.

Without prognosticating on what the Spurs will do, lol at any of you idiots thinking SA or Houston is better than Austin. Houston is a massive sprawl of suburbs and shithole strip clubs. It’s not a marquee city, has a shitty fucking owner, and has nothing to boast about other than some really good shawarma. SA will always be a sleepy small town masquerading as a slightly larger town.
There is no other city in the US booming like Austin. Real estate prices are soaring because of the mass influx here. The city is becoming an economic hub with relocations like Tesla and Oracle (along with the mass amount of other tech companies). There’s more to do, a younger more urban vibe, and a better overall social climate. If you’re a young rich player who’s looking for corporate opportunities and the ability to party with some really attractive women, you’d be hard pressed to find a better city than Austin.

Thinking a millionaire NBA player cares about bar hopping on Rainey or 6th street after the game :lol.
Not trying to make this an Austin vs San Antonio argument. Both are great cities, and pretty much every city/town in Texas has its charm.
Of course you have the Joe Rogan's who move from Cali to Texas who hype Austin/Texas like it is the best thing since sliced bread that is why the city gets even more appeal. That is where I can see that LA/New York hypel to it. Austin is a smaller SA with a much better (entertainment)/modern downtown area imo. Don't see a lot of differences outside of that & probably political views.
Most of the Spurs players either live right outside of downtown or the La Cantera area both really beautiful areas that have everything you need there. Outside of Dick Jefferson who was trolling. I have not heard of any players say how boring or lame SA is. Even Charles Barkley mentions how great SA is even with all them big ol women out there :lol. Duncan, Parker, and Gino still live here majority of the year so they know it's a great city to raise a family.
Most of the NBA teams either stay at Hotel Emma at the Pearl which has been recognized as one of the best hotels & area's in the country or the Grand Hyatt which is really nice. So it's not like the parts of SA they see outside of the AT&T Center aren't very nice.
I agree that Austin is booming and any relocation or expansion franchise (outside of NBA) should look at Austin. I think getting a MLS team is perfect for the city. At the end of day they will always be a college town like SA will always be a basketball town even if they ever got another franchise.

I know you're trying to be a smart ass but come on man, it's an hour fucking drive via a straight shot on I-35. It may as well be San Antonio - Austin by now.
i was just asking tbh :lol

Relatively. The traffic is not so bad usually once you get Buda, etc.

:lol not during the day. Takes me almost two hours in normal traffic unless I take the toll road. I-35 is a mess these days.

The elevated lanes should help some but I can only imagine how bad it’s going to be during construction.

I was going to say the traffic in Austin is silly stupid, but I was referring to when you technically get outside of Austin or even around South Park Meadows, the traffic is not as bad starting there.

It's bad from SA all t way to New Braunfels, gets better until Kyle (sans around the Outlets), and is shit the rest of the way. Just too many trucks and commuters between the cities.

At least construction won't be on the actual freeway for most of it, but yeah it's gonna get worse before it gets better. Wonder what they're gonna eventually do about Austin? I'd start by redirecting the 35 onto the toll roads to bypass Austin and do away with the tolls while banning all truck traffic along current I-35 except for local business.

San Antonio sounds OK for NBA players when you lay it out like that. I didn't realize Joe Rogan moved to Austin. When/why did he make the decision to move? I haven't watched his podcast for a while now (haven't had the time). Was it a recent move?
Thanks for the video, Playblair. I'll try and watch it when I have some time.

I see Austin and SA as very different. Different education levels. Different money levels. Different racial numbers (Austin is much whiter). Austin may be 90 minutes north, but culturally it is about 1500 miles away, in my opinion.

Idk why anyone would think Austin is a more attractive destination. it's a shithole tbh, you literally cannot even go to a restaurant in a suburban area without seeing a homeless guy arguing with a garbage can. walking downtown is a nightmare

Do you live in Austin?
