It's definitely not bad but for close to the same price, you can walk into a buffet and load up a to-go box with more choices and usually better tasting food.

And don't tell me the "Orange Chicken is crack".

You've been on a Pasadena kick. It's a city I've been to a few times cos the Rose Bowl. I've driven past it some other times probably. But not too familiar with it.
It seems like the right combo of stuff and not too busy though. It'd be good to live if you wanted/needed to frequent LA/Hollywood. It's just close enough but yet out of the way.

I can accept this based on Panda getting rid of the bbq pork.
But before that occurred, the triple combo with orange chicken, bbq pork, and grilled terriyaki chicken was the sh**.
If only I knew to enjoy that while it lasted. :bang

Chinese buffets are terrible quality. I've been to about 30 different ones in like 6 different states (mostly Texas) in my lifetime and they're all about the same. Lukewarm reheated overly salted under seasoned food. Panda Express is no better, though. Neither are its competitors. My favorite Chinese in San Antonio is Wok Inn (sit down, not a buffet or take out) and my favorite Chinese I've ever had is a place in Lindenwold New Jersey, in 2009... they had both take out and dine in.

Yeah...I used to work at a job that took me to that area three times a year. My boss was pretty cool in that we'd normally eat at pretty good restaurants. One that we always went to was Panda Inn and I always looked forward to it.
If it was late, we'd always run through In N Out.

The other thing I remember was going to a casino called, "Mongo Casino". It was probably filled with 90% Asian people and so full of smoke, it was hard to breath. But at the time, I was happy to just be able to gamble.

Edit...it's actually "Morongo Casino".

Similar situation here. There's a Chinese place that gives about 30 percent more than Panda for 85 percent of the price. But the orange chicken is more crackly and the rice is clumpier.

I don't eat that "chino cochino"... it's either sit down high quality stuff or nothing for me, I guess because I'm an old man now. That sodium nuke greasy Chinese food is awful; I left that behind in my teens. I don't care if it's $7.99 plus tax for 3000+ calories worth of unlimited lukewarm Chinese/Asian Fusion food, it's not worth damaging my body over mediocre food.

You'd think where you're at in California there would be much better quality Chinese places since there are millions of actual ethnically Chinese/Asian people in CA, especially in and around LA and SF.

Agreed. Unless you have a gem like Wok Inn in San Antonio that exists in the suburban areas. NYC has some good ones in Manhattan, of course that's urban though. As I discussed, NJ as well. But haven't found a DFW-area equivalent. And Michigan (at least my half of Michigan) sucks for anything that isn't American food.

Lemon Chicken is meh... where are you living if not in SA though? Please don't tell me you're in CA and can't find Chinese food

What i've been looking for a long time is Chicken Lemon Grass. Haven't eaten any since April of 2005. It was my favorite thing at HEB when they used to have the Chinese Kitchen before they stopped doing that concept later that year.

Mexican- very high in cholesterol and saturated fat between all the oil, cheese, beans and various meat. Not the spiciest unless you want it to be, but all the fat and cholesterol can give you a bad stomach if you're not careful, used to it, or prepared (I take cholestoff with such meals, they're quite handy and they work)... but otherwise, very delicious and you definitely miss it if you're in a northern place for awhile that doesn't have good Mexican.

Italian- high carb, lower fat, generally lighter and daintier than Mexican, unless you're talking about a takeout pizza, which is more American than Italian. But still, lighter and delicious and unlikely to cause gastro issues, unless of course you eat a whole American pizza.

Chinese- high sodium, high protein, variable in fat, but can be nutritious if you select certain items with more vegetables. Doesn't have to be super spicy. It's hard to find good Chinese food outside of the major metro areas. The Panda Express's and Chinese buffets of the world are no good.

Indian- is actually good every once in awhile, but you really have to be in the mood for it, and working in IT makes you generally not in the mood for it. Generally high in saturated fat and cholesterol, similar to Mexican food. Can be on the spicy side, but, scarcely has it ever given me a bad stomach.

Thai- can be healthy if you get the right things, generally healthier than Chinese food, but you have to know what to get and don't ever get "Thai hot". The Thai green curry is disgusting, though. I stick to pork key mow and occasionally a pad-thai type of dish with medium spice and don't have gastro issues with it.

Mediterranean / Middle Eastern- again, you have to know what to get. This can be the healthiest and leanest food you can eat if you know what to get. With falafel specifically, don't take it lightly, just because it's not meat- it is a very dense food and eating too much of it can and will upset your stomach. One is generally fine. Greek Salad is amazing and I've never had issues when eating a Gyro or Shwarma.

Did I miss anything, tbh? Other than American, which is well, American. Yeah there's Japanese/sushi but it generally falls under the category of Chinese because sushi is available in most Chinese restaurants in the USA. There's Vietnamese which is basically just that bone-broth soup (pho) which is benign or you can get a Vietnamese sandwich with a bunch of veggies on a very soggy bread. There's Korean BBQ/korean food, had it a couple times in 2013, bulgogi and ramen; it didn't give me an issue. I don't know what's left? There's not really any Russian food, East Europe isn't considered a food haven, nor is Africa or South America.. although for I've read people that do actually eat in Africa, it's quite similar to like Louisiana/Jamaican cuisine.

I totally empathize. I went to ToGos on (best mainstream OTC sammich joint not named Scholtzky's) Saturday because I was hankering a meatball sub and there's is very fucking tasty.

ONLY two people in front of me. 30 minutes to get my sammich, no lie. I get to the POS to pay and it crashes. I'm standing there for 10 minutes for the system to restart. It never does and the meantime my sammich is just getting cold, soggy and unpalatable .

I've waited 40 minutes and it's now just a mush marinara fest of a sammich. POS system not up still. What would y'all do if you're the manager?

Well, they didn't. Even worse, the group of 5 who saw me walk out beat me to the Subway after I left.

I disagree. SA is one of the best places to get all sorts of ethnicity food. And it doesn't stop at Mexican. Due to all the military bases in SA you can find high quality ethnic food from all over the world. Also reasonably priced compared to most of the rest of the USA. That wasn't really the complaint. Most Chinese food Americans eat isn't authentic. My point was that if you're willing to get out of the car and walk in a Chinese restaurant, you can usually find better food at a cheaper price. Of course, this is probably heavily dependent on where you live.

Even for average food, I can go into a buffet and get some of everything for the same price. Even if you load up a takeout box, you're better off.

I think the buffet is a little more authentic which turns the American locals off. Also I can't remember the last time I ate inside a Panda. I did it years ago at the Mall food court but if I'm doing sit down then it will be Chins (not sure if you have that). I stopped doing buffets some years ago because I just found myself paying to get more full. At a point that wasn't necessary. In America I have a nice sized fridge and take advantage. I don't stuff myself with the big portions in one sitting.

Good point about the takeout box. Before Covid there was a Pick Up Stix here and although more expensive I preferred to Panda. But when I was younger my mother really loved the Panda skinny noodles. Even though she would enjoy Thai, Viet, Indian and "authentic" Chinese with me, she still really liked those noodles

Sidenote: here in California the Mexicans don't really eat Asian food but Panda is packed with them

I guess it depends on the buffet. Around where I live, it's mostly different variations of Panda. Five kinds of fried chicken in various sauces (orange, sesame, etc.), a few types of beef, some fried shrimp stuff.
But in any event, I can load up a take out box with several types of food and get a bowl of soup as well for around $10. And other than the Crack Orange Chicken, the buffet is better.
