Hmmm ... interesting. Walker starting in place of DeRozan?

Good way to get Dieng some minutes. Maybe even start him, tbh.

Exciting development. Hoping the young guys stay out of foul trouble, play loose and make it competitive.

This was most likely an L with full team but don’t want any excuses.

At this point with 17 or 18 games left. The Spurs might as well roll out lineups like this. They need to see their young guys play. Team management needs to see what that have as they move forward into next year and beyond.

A meaningless "Play In" game is a fools errand now.

Excellent word “leagues” referring to distance.
From google “ League, any of several European units of measurement ranging from 2.4 to 4.6 statute miles (3.9 to 7.4 km). In English-speaking countries the land league is generally accepted as 3 statute miles (4.83 km), although varying lengths from 7,500 feet to 15,000 feet (2.29 to 4.57 km) were sometimes employed.”

I understand sitting DeMar, especially when I want to see Derrick & DeJounte with the ball more, but sitting Poeltl is puzzling.

I'm expecting another L, yet I'd rather see Poeltl banging against Ayton over Eubanks or Dieng.

Not a good start to this game so far......

Eubanks has been the back up center since LaMarcus' "injury" and eventual buy - out.

I think it's more a talent gap than anything doing with nerves or rust for Eubanks.

Devin Vassell is at 39% from 3 while never allowed to establish a rhythm because his coach likes being random and schizo.

An intelligent team would have Vassell shooting 6 threes a game already.

RC_Drunkford

My bad.

Yeah, he would look bad without consistent minutes or any real role. Hopefully he picks it up in the 2nd quarter, otherwise Pop will gladly go with Keldon or Rudy instead.

Gotta keep up this level of defensive intensity, fast pace & ball movement.

This type of play is exactly why I want DeMar (and Rudy) gone after the season. It might not be fully sustainable, but better to see the young guys sink or swim over the middling results with the current (or recent past) vets.

Kurgan
04-17-2021, 09:37 PM
Spacing and ball movement is much improved without Demar/Jakob. Purrtle is a decent player but it's suicide having him start alongside Demar when neither can shoot.

RC_Drunkford

It's pretty clear that Samanic and Vassell need minutes and Johnson has to get benched for either Walker or Vassell so the starters have more 3-point shooting

that's not as much of an issue as Johnson being a bad 3-point shooter and White not hitting enough 3s either. Keldon has to be replaced by either Vassell or Walker. They are not getting enough shots with the bench and would improve the starters spacing big time

Lonnie is too small to be a starting SF & I'm not sure if DeMar can play PF over the rest of the season.

Vassell should definitely be an option, but again DeMar is occupying minutes and a position that would go to him.

I understand this level of play is unsustainable over the course of an entire season but the team just looks so much more enjoyable to watch without one guy dominating the ball in the starting lineup(Dumbar) and the other taking all the shots off the bench(Fatty). Ball movement, spacing, defense all much improved without those two.

Walker should be the 1st option anytime he’s on the floor. Highest ceiling on the team by far. An atrocity that he’s a spot up shooter for Rudy and Fatty

Walker as a 1st option on offense is way better than DeRozan. Just off his 3-point shooting alone

The threat of 3 point shooting is everything.

DeRozan with a 3 point shot, even with his defensive inefficiencies, would be so much better.

Another wrinkle teams have to worry about when defending us.

The ball isn't moving. The offense is the same. Eubanks is doing hand offs and Murray/White are just running off the pick. It's no different. The difference is the defense and spurs hitting their 3's. Spurs have 11 ast off 25 makes. That's not moving the ball.

I thought he was really solid defensively help side. Thought his on ball defense wasn't very good which was unusual. On offense he had about three good looks he has to knock at least one of those down to be a NBA player I will give you that. He looks like a still developing raw 21 year old player who hasn't played much of the 20 something games he has had the chance to play this season.

he didn’t look good tonight, but hadn’t played consistent minutes since before the all star break. Rudy has looked like dog shit several times recently despite playing every single game.

The point is that he needs to have opportunities to make mistakes and learn from them, rather than playing rotational minutes once a month with zero practice reps and expecting anything other than him being inconsistent.

Weird how the guy who eats up the majority of Luka’s minutes is consistently awful, yet Luka gets absolutely zero slack from some of y’all.

I don't think this win tonight changes anything at all. Spurs schedule is still pretty brutal. GS is also starting to play pretty good basketball, and Memphis and Dallas have been good enough to not lose enough ground. In the East I would not be surprised if Washington makes the playoffs from the play in tournament. They are playing really well right now. Might need to keep our eye out on Charlotte though if that happens. I think there's still a shot we can get pick ten even winning a few more games. I think you underestimate how important wins are like this to young personal.
When you play where there's, to a great extent, an unflinching hierarchical rotation, respect has to be earned through in game NBA experience, training and scrimmages.

With this season though, you really only have the former ie. In game play - to make your case and point to why you should be on the floor.

Now you have just beaten one of the top teams on the road, in the same conference, on the second night of a b2b.

Team was as competitive for 48 minutes as I've seen all year.
That will pay dividends in the long run, even if it is as simple as suggesting that DDR should not be on the team next year and Patty does not have to feature as a key cog going forward.

A win like this, regardless of positional Draft advantage, can only mean good things to a core who rarely have been given these chances.
We saw the exact same thing happen last year a week or so before the shutdown...then fully embraced in the bubble and the better part of this season.

I still think we're a play-in team at best now, but if we are going to win some, youth best be served and I can happily live with the outcome.

Respectfully, I think you overestimate what this win does for a young player when most of our young players have already had a taste of the playoffs. Dejounte Murray, Derrick White and Jakob Poetl all have playoff experience. Is it really more important to get a chance to get murked in the 1st round just so Keldon and Vassell can get the experience? Or wouldn't it be more important to position ourselves for our best chance to be formidable playoff participants in the years to come instead? We have to remind ourselves with the harsh reality that free agents, particularly SUPERSTARS or just stars in general, do NOT want to play in San Antonio. The last star who did just retired last week and just so happened to be a Texan with a son living nearby. Unassuming Stars with character like the Big 3 and Da Admiral don't grow on trees. Stars now are all about the glamour and "clout" and the mainstream exposure and they know they won't get that playing in San Antonio. The only way we can convince one to be a long term Spurs player is to get him through the draft and the more we keep winning these types of fruitless games, the less likely we are to get a player of real positive consequence moving forward. It's just a shitty situation.

We just tied the Dubs, who lost today and won't be having Wiseman coming back the rest of the season. 11th or 12th is our best case scenario but had we rolled over tonight, we still would've had an outside shot at 9th pick. Now, we have to hope players are snubbed in the draft and we get a steal. We just beat a good Suns team though so I'm really worried we'll end up with a late 1st round pick now.

I agree with every point you made Padre. I wasn’t talking about getting playoff experience fwiw, as unfortunately think the seeds have been sown as far as that and draft positioning is concerned this season. After the disastrous home stand, think we will finish at best 10-11th in the conference and then you’re looking at 1-2 draft position spots +/- at best either way come July. Don’t think we can realistically lose more than that.

What I really mean is, this is one of the first times we have had a Pseudo Socialist Offense and the results were encouraging.
The ball moved, players shot when open (and w/o hesitation), they played with moxy, gusto. They were given reward for effort on both ends.

Younger Players showed they may be ready to take on more responsibility than the coaching staff thought or at least sooner.

If we win going forward with young players predominantly at the helm, doesn’t it suggest they’re better than we thought and we may have some stars already? If we’re winning and found this out, can’t see a downside to this.

If we lose, it just proves your point even further which may put us in the position to do a proper tank job next year.

I know it seems ugly atm but games like this could very well be the beginning of something special going forward...

At worst, it’s a flash in the pan game. But goodness knows, we should celebrate a little as we’ve seen some mediocre basketball over the last month or so :tu

Stop looking at percentages for the season when over time they're getting better at shooting. The team has had no practices as they would during a regular season, barely any time to stabilize their shooting.

I read the "Pseudo Socialist Offense" and laughed-- it's a very apt description, and there are probably times when everyone should go on the pseudo socialist offensive in their lives, scattering good efforts all over the place!

It was just so refreshing to see legitimate ball movement, no hesitancy shooting threes, and six guys in double figures.

One other thing that I think is important to note: the shooting in this game wasn't all that great or outlandishly out of the ordinary. Sure, you can't expect Eubanks to shoot 100% from the field regularly, but Walker was 3 for 11, Samanic was 0 for 6, and White was 4 for 13. But Phoenix's All Star back court shot poorly with no DeRozan or Mills to focus their attack on.

Not sure you should include field goals near the rim and classify that as shooting. Shots made near the rim have more to do with the player's response to physicality, while actual shooting has to do with aim and skill.
