Ours sucks. It's a Linksys and if you move out of the same room, it barely works if at all. And now even the computers that are plugged right into it have problems on and off, forcing us to restart the router a couple times per day.

What is the best wireless router out there?

Thanks.

:lol I was debating whether to say *coughMicrosoftcough*

But seriously, no problems. My husband's laptop is the only wireless computer, and he uses it in the other room and sometimes outside on the patio with no problems.

Now RR on the other hand...

D Link and Netgear are both good.

Linksys is total and utter fucking garbage. had about 4 of those bitches in the old school routers *with wires* and finally was able to get people to wise up and tell them to fuck off with their junk. works for maybe 3 months before slowing dying in terms of ports going out and what not.

I have some omni directional Hi gain antennas and you probably want to put one of those on your router. That boosts the sensitivty of the antenna. Linksys does tend to be shit though. I would go with a D-Link. But placement of the router is key, as is having some hi gain antennas on it. I think I'm about to go buy a directional antenna, and if I do you can have one of my hi gain's.

Dude I have Linksys too! Eff that! I'm always dropping my connection and having to restart the router, it sucks. And I thought it was supposed to be an okay brand.

Here's what I use with my iMac, but it works for Windows as well. Zero issues so far and it has been running continously for over a year. I haven't rigged it up yet, but you can wirelessly stream iTunes through it to your home stereo as well.

I have linksys, and Im not too happy with it either, but we had everything I needed in stock at the time at work, if I had to do it again, Id probably get the d-Link.

RR?

U actually paid/pay RR for wireless? You could have done it yourself! :lol

I have RR and have wireless- I use the same equipment they do/did and it has never given real problems.

I think she's just saying that she has problems with Road Runner .. not that she pays them for wireless.

Kori is correct. There isn't a day that goes by when it doesn't go out for a minute. And this was after it kept going out for days. This is fixed by the way because they were out a few weeks ago and I have a new modem and a new cable line outside. THAT fixed my in demand problem.

Carie

What was your problem with On Demand? Does it freeze up after you order something?

We have a Netgear WGT624 wireless router that cost less than $50 and have been using for two desktops (one a media computer) and a laptop for wireless access with no problems. There's also one computer plugged directly into it.

On-Demand likes to arbitrarily re-boot my digital box, after waiting forever on the initial screen. :cuss :lol

I also have the MN-700 and have had very few problems with it. I got it over a year ago... I think. I got a good deal on the router and a PC card for $99. I've got a co-worker who wants me to set up a wireless network at his house, I think I'll avoid the Linksys that I was going to get for him.

It wasn't working on our HD box but worked on our digital one upstairs. We had called about and they were supposed to call us back and never did and totally forgot about it. Anyway, the technician said there are certain numbers it needs to work and the HD box was way over the max and that's why it didn't work. Long story short, he couldn't figure out why it was doing that and it was bugging the crap out of him and came out the next day to replace the cable to see if that was the problem, which it was.

He had originally come out because of RR and I just asked if he could look at In Demand. Now that's customer service!

Netgear
D-Link, Belkin
Linksys (it's a cisco company - what did you expect?)

I'm not familiar with the Microsoft model since it's not available over here. The Apple Airport Express is very reliable but have a slightly shorter range. It's great for streaming music to the stereo though.

For those of you that like a bit of DYI I recomend a Soekris 4521 embedded computer with OpenBSD Operating system and a Netgear miniPCI WLAN board with your choice of antenna (even a cheap omni antena will give you an extra 2 - 4 dB). This is a bullet proof Access point with the best range of any of the toys you can buy ready made. Beside that it will double as a fantastic firewall/router for your complete home network.

We just switched from Linksys to D-Link about 2 months ago and love it. We had problems for about a year and a half and couldn't figure out what was going on. It was the damn router. We got the DI-604 D-Link router.

I've been using cheap-ass AirLink router and adapters that were on sale at Fry's for $20 -- not bad as it runs at double the usual "g" speeds (I transfer and stream alot of video). I stick their aftermarket antennas on everything. I can usually get those for $5-10 and they're at least twice as effective as the standard OEM antennas.

If I had a house I'd definitely go with a MIMO (fancy acronym for routers with several antennas) router -- I think Belkin has the best reviewed one and it's worked fine the places we've installed them. It increased the wireless range for their existing adapters (they claim 20%; we didn't measure but we know adapters that weren't getting a signal now do). For the best results, it's recommended to use their adapters as well.

I had a Netgear 10/100 hub that worked for 8 years under heavy use before petering out. I've had a d-link and lynksys routers with vpn and other goodies and they both work fine.
Lynksis does have a bad rep though.
