Beckham and Zlatan both went that route before successfully resurrecting their Euro careers.
And MLS rules is structured to grant big stars revenue sharing they generate. So this is not at all far fetched.

Sergio Ramos may end playing 1-2 seasons in the City and then more in the NYC FC team that has the same owners, so they can offer a long term contract and retirement plan.
