Spurs vs Suns
November 19, 2005 | SBC Center

http://www.nba.com/spurs/news/gameday_051119.html

Game Plotlines
by Greg Ruder
The Spurs are back at home tonight to host the Phoenix Suns in the SBC Center at 7:30pm.

The Spurs come into the game sporting a 7-2 record on the season and remain undefeated at home, their last game coming at home on Thursday night against the Houston Rockets. Their 7-2 record ties them for the best record in the Western Conference with the surprising Los Angeles Clippers. Only Detroit has a better record in the entire NBA, improving to 8-0 last night with a win over the Rockets.

The Suns enter tonight's match-up with a 4-4 record. The Suns posted the best record in the league last year, putting up a 62-20 record. Few are surprised at the slow start they have had early this season, as they lost their leading scorer and second leading rebounder from last season, Amare Stoudemire, to knee surgery late in the pre-season. He will be out at least until the All-Star Break. However, the Spurs don't expect the Suns to roll over and hand them an easy win.

"There are still some of the same threats like Steve Nash and Shawn Marion," said Spurs shooting guard Manu Ginobili. "Of course they are missing Amare, but they are still a great team and doing well.

"They're very dangerous. They're confident in their system. (Stoudemire) is a big part of what they do...rebounding, shot blocking, running the fast break, and running the pick and roll with Steve Nash. But there are many cases where teams without their best player get a lot more from other guys."

The Suns have moved Kurt Thomas into the starting center position to start the season. He and Brian Grant split most of the center duties. Thomas was acquired in a trade with the New York Knicks in the off-season, and so far is averaging 9.4ppg and 5.9rpg.

Though they are without one of their biggest scoring threats, the Suns once again lead the league this season in scoring, putting up an average of 106.75ppg. The Suns starting point guard and last season's league MVP, Steve Nash, is currently averaging 18.1ppg and 11.6apg. His assists-per-game average leads the league by two assists per game. Second on the list is T.J. Ford of Milwaukee, with 9.6apg.

"Any team that's run by Steve Nash is going to be a heck of a team," said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. "Whoever is playing with him, he's going to make them better, and this happens to be a talented group he's got with him. They don't have Amare, and that makes it tougher on them, but they have a lot of great players there that are doing a good job and picking up some of the slack."

The last time these two teams met was in the Western Conference Finals last season where the Spurs knocked the Suns out in five games to move on to the NBA Finals.

Stuff To Know
Spurs - The San Antonio Spurs' Hall-of-Famer George "Iceman" Gervin was originally selected by the Phoenix Suns with the 40th overall pick in the 1974 NBA Draft. His contract was sold to the Spurs on January 30, 1974.

Suns - The Phoenix Suns handed the Spurs their worst loss in franchise history, beating the Spurs by 46 points (137-91) on April 15, 1989.

Spurs miss 10 FTs in first half, 44% FTs is keeping Spurs from staying much closer.
20% 1-5 3Gs.

Suns defense is bothering Spurs offense, esp the fronting and doubling of Tim.

Is Nazr not playing? I dont see him on the yahoo sports play by play thing

People call timvp crazy for thinking the Spurs will do all it takes to lower Nazr's market value, but it was evident during game one of the season.

Rasho started, which wasn't a surprise, but Nazr didn't see the court until the third quarter. When he did get into the game, Pop was all over him the entire game. He got into his face a couple times and even pulled him from the game after a slow rotation by Tim Duncan led to a score. It didn't matter that Duncan was at fault, Nazr got the lashing from Pop.

This is going to be a looooong season for Nazr. Rasho and Oberto will be given every opportunity to win the starting center spot. Nazr will be yanked in and out of games. The San Antonio media won't hesitate to drop rumors of the Spurs being angry with Nazr's progression. As we've already seen, Nazr's family isn't off limits.

All in the name of the Almighty Dollah.

It was written.

Here's a theory...Nazr sucks ass

And Rasho doesnt?

Solid D
11-19-2005, 09:47 PM
The Suns may be playing without a center, but their length and quickness at the 2, 3, and 4 spots are killing the Spurs. Diaw and Barbosa are taking it strong off the dribble and their length is an advantage. Beno did nothing for the Spurs and Finley did okay at first but his horrible pass that led to a fast break seemed to opened the floodgates.

TP was great on his penetrations but the Spurs are really off on their outside shooting.

PHX looks like Steve Nash and 4 greyhounds.

Any team with Steve Nash on the floor is going to be tough to beat. Suns played a small team but they are young and athletic. With Barbosa out, the matchups swung to favor the Spurs in the 2nd half. Also, Pop putting Nazr on Boris Diaw really cut down on Diaw's drives.

I agree with that statement Solid D.

pop should have stuck with the money lineup in 2nd period longer. horry, duncan, manu, parker and bowen. they pushed the lead a bit then he made weird subs and the d disappeared. we still have 2 months of tinkering to go tho... then we can start shutting people down consistently.

and people thought the Suns would make up excues...Finely didn't look hurt to me...Manu looked fine..(it's not my fault Bell can play some D)and Barry come on ..The Spurs already have a very deep bench..

This game was lost by the Suns we really could have won..And just think we only lost by 6(with the chance to take the lead several times)..and we 1.Don't have our best Player Amare 2.Don't have LB who had 14points before half and is now going to be out 2-4weeks 3.Boris Diaw hurt his ankle in this game 4.Kurt Thomas was foulded out in like15min.

The Spurs won fair...but i'm very proud of the Suns..and really i hope for a #1 seat Spurs and a #8 Suns in the 1st round playoffs!!!

"Freaking floping Ginobili takes out Barbosa"

May have been the key "play" in the game.
He was playing great, and fun to watch.
Hope he's not out long.
Let's us know what the docs say.

Almost identical to Manu falling against Dirk's leg in 03 WCF, with similar "key" results.

It was a chain reaction actually initiated by Raja Bell. Raja sent a flying elbow to Manu's head and Manu fell to the floor, crashing into Barbosa's left leg.

NashtoAmare
11-20-2005, 07:43 PM
oh whatever...That's just Manu's lame excuse to try to get a foul on Bell..mean while Barobosa is lying on the groud in pain and Manu is already have way into the locker room.I was starting to like Manu again...but not anymore..There's talk about Leandro being out longer than Amare!!! but i hope it's just for 2-4weeks.

..There's talk about Leandro being out longer than Amare!!! but i hope it's just for 2-4weeks.

If this is true, that's the worst a sprain ever... not only that, but I'll hang myself. I love the brazilian and the only delight I had thus far has been the play of Barbosa.

There was a Raja elbow, but if Manu wasn't such a prissy little girl all the time, flopping to taddle on the defenders, then prehaps Barbosa wouldn't be injured and the Suns might be 4-3.

Who knows, but that play just summizes the Suns-v-Spurs matchups. Even when Phoenix wins (or is winning), something will happen where they lose.

Whether it's a meaningless win vs. a Duncan/Manu-less Spurs team or Manu kamikaziin' little Leo's knee.

I don't blame Manu anymore for Barbosa than I do Stackhouse last year for JJ. It was unfortunate. But it's silly to pretend that Manu was falling because of the elbow rather than an attempt to draw a foul or technical. It's what he does. Every freakin' game. It's just a shame he didn't see Barbosa behind him. Had he, perhaps things would have come out different.

I certainly don't think it was intentional... the landing on Barbosa, not the flopping.

And to you Spurs fans who cry about Raja, just about every one of you wanted him as a FA. I can drudge up the posts. Also, you cheer for your own little "defensive anything it takes" kinda scrapper in Bowen. Or, are all those players that accuse Bowen of dirty play making things up while all you righteous Spurs fans are 100% accurate in your identical claims of Bell.

You can dish, but you fellas can't take anything. Excuses, excuses up the wazzu until the same arguments are used against your own players.

Boo freakin' hoo... Raja elbowed Manu!!!! Wait a minute!!! Bowen didn't stick his foot underneath a falling Ray Allen! You're seeing things! OOOOHHHH Woah is us! Raja elbowed Horry!!! Hold your forked tongue, their Vince Carter, Bowen would never intentionally stick his feet under you as you returned to earth after a jumper! That's like saying Karl Malone intentionally cleared space for his jumper with that little jumpkick thing he does. Bowen was just staking claim to an area of the court you'd recently vacated. Got a question...

How many of you 17,000 posts have added anything of value to this site?

You're a first class joke.

You remind of a story.

Upon winning his first ring with the Bulls, Joe Klein was spotted by Michael Jordan. He was jumping up and down with tears filling his eyes in celebration over finally winning his ring. Jordan asked him, "What the hell you crying for. I'm still waitin' for my 'thank you'!"

Ya see, Klein may have been able to celebrate in the winning, but contributed nothing to the outcome.

In this story, you're Joe Klein.

You sit there with this air about you as if you've accompished something simply because you pull for the Spurs.

He's doing quite well under the circumstances.

I don't know. He's pulled Jones who was his teams best 3-point shooter (averaged 14 points and 3 made threes per in the first three games). He doesn't play big when they need a rebound.

And it's not just this year.

I don't think he's very good at all. Nash runs everything on the court. D'Antoni stands there, arms crossed watching Nash shoot those horrible 20-foot, hand-in-face fall-away floaters, never once dreaming of calling an actual play.

Those have to be the worst shots ever.

Sarcasm... perhaps it wasn't identifiable, but I'm sure the "thanks Manu" was merely sarcasm.

Three things could have prevented the injury.

1. Raja not swining the elbow
2. Manu not flopping
3. Barbosa not being in rebounding position

It's not one's fault, but the facts remain, Raja 'bowed Manu, Manu flopped into Barbosa's knee, Barbosa's knee decided it couldn't support such weight and was sprained.

Thank you..

I'm sorry ManuMaina if i like made you mad...but you took my words way to seriously..

Since when does any Spurs fan even care what Suns fans have to say... it don't matter to me if you're a Suns fan or not, I don't make that disctinction. I like to treat people as intelligent, discerning human beings (with the exception of a few on this forum http://spurstalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smilol.gif they know who they are). I wouldn't make sucha big deal if I thought your opinion did not matter.

Can't comment on cheap shots and to be honest, I haven't read your two's entire transcript either.

I read the first post which drew such ire and figured I'd comment on what I took from it.

From what I've seen, Manu borders on sneaky. Not dirty. That's reserved for Artest and others of his ilk. But he's certainly sneaky and craft, much in the way that Stockton was. His flops have injured people, but it's not intentional. Flying and falling bodies landing on ankles and knees just tend to have that effect.

lets get somethign straight, Manu flops, but most are warranted. you can't tell me you believe Manu is ALWAYS flopping. Most are legitimate fouls, and Manu accentuates them. Nothing wrong with that. Any time someone gets injured because of someone falling on them unintentionally is called an accident.

I never blamed Manu.

He flops on a breeze going by sometimes. I recall the incident in the WCF last year.

But yes, most of the time, there is contact. I won't however say they are fouls, because I'm of the mindset that unless the contact severely hinders or affects the shot or defensive positioning, that it's incidental and should not be deemed a foul.

I, for the large part, like physical players. Not thuggery, but good hard, Detroit Pistons style ball. Especially this year with their offense throwning in 100+ per game.

Nothing wrong with a bump or a push in my book.

When they aren't fouls half the time, yeah... I think it's silly. It's smart and I give him credit for the skill, but it's still flopping.

The game has gotten way to watered down with whistles.

Basketball should have some physical play involved.

the spurs are a dirty team. Don't worry. I think the suns will be able to beat other teams that don't flop as much. Manu irritates me also.

I am not about to claim for a second that Manu injures anyone on purpose because I think Ginobili is a decent dude and a hell of a basketball player.

However he does endanger other players sometimes with his antics as proven last night.

Bell stuck him arm out there but there is no way Bell's extended arm or elbow threw Manu to the floor. He did that to himself and injured someone in the process.

The loss of the game is not as painful as the loss of Barbosa.

Freaking flopper, I am still pissed.

As for the game I am proud of how the Suns played. The story of the season continues though. The Suns have trouble closing out good teams.

I don't get it, first you people complain about the game not being physical enough, and then you're scared Ginobili is going to fall on someone?? Hey genius, IT WAS AN ACCIDENTE!! Get it?? Do you really think that if Manu stopped exaggerating calls no Suns player will ever get injured again sweetheart?

Give it a rest! You lost, and now because of an accident you're prime to lose some more, and you're bitter about it. GO VENT SOMEWHERE ELSE!

You people?! Please show me where I said anything of the sort.

I get it that it was an accident that he fell on Barbosa. It wasn't an accident that he fell. Gilobili threw himself to the floor, again.

I am not bitter, I am pissed that Manu injured one of our players with his stupid flopping. If one of our players had flopped himself onto the floor and hurt one of your players by accident you would be pissed too.

As for giving it a rest, I will now if you will.

Simply amazing. Bell extends his arm and pops Manu as the first action of the play. That fact is not in question. Manu then falls into Barbosa when he goes down from the contact from Bell, and perhaps maybe he exagerates the contact. And you equate that into Manu's actions endangering other players. What a laugh.

Some Suns fans have reached the level of Sonic fans crying about Manu roughing up James and Fortson on his way to the hole.

IT WAS AN ACCIDENT!!! Let it go! Manu's flopping is beside the point. Flopping is not a crime, and just because it happened to injure one of your players by accident, does not make it one! You're not angry because Manu flopped, you're angry because one of your players got injured in an accident, and you can find no other way of venting than to rag on Manu who was doing a perfectly legal thing!

I don't see where one precludes the other.

Manu threw himself to the ground on contact from Bell and injured Barbosa.

His action was intentional the result was accidental.

and perhaps maybe he exagerates the contact.

That is a laugh. Manu isn't that weak that he is thrown to the floor by an arm extended.

Perhaps maybe he exaggerated. :lol

To all the mindnumbingly ignorant Spurs fans who allow their own bias to navigate their opinions, please, READ the following.

...Raja elbowed Manu, who attempted to draw a foul by exaggerating the contact and flopping. No, he didn't intentionally try to hurt Barbosa and Barbosa never said he did. Only that his flop was on purpose.

The cause was intentional, the effect an accident.

Exactly.

This is a Suns fans account that was claimed to be exactly right from your fearless unbiased leader.
