As much as I would hate to see the SA Spurs move from SA to Austin or between the two metro areas, that would be better than someplace far away. I think enough of the owner group is tied to South Central Texas to keep the franchise there long term. The team has enough history and Gravitas to be a long term fixture. Of course, that can change too if the ownership mix changes significantly.
HEB, Dell, USAA, Whataburger would be decent possible naming sponsors. Oh, Frost Bank as well. I kind of hate AT&T anyway. They can pound sand given their crappy customer service and products.

If you never had tortas ahogadas, they're carnitas (eg fried pork) tortas, with some refried beans and pickled red onion dipped in thin hot sauce (or if you get it to go they'll give you a baggie of the sauce to dump on your sandwich when you eat it). Bread they use there stays crunchy on the outside but soaks up all that nice heat on the inside. If you just get the straight hot sauce without cutting it with the tomato one it is fucking hot, like sweating and mouth turns red after eating hot. Almost like popping a couple of raw habeneros hot. Even someone like me who loves heat will practically go through a liter of water eating one lol. I have never actually had anything but the hottest one there. Always meaning to try the birria too but hard to resist the torta when I'm on that side of town.
Fucking Las Palapas. Tacos are pretty good there but the salsa is dogshit, which ruins the place for me. Only thing I can order there is like bean and cheese since I don't usually put sauce on those or machacado a la Mexicana since I think that comes with some jalapeno or serrano already in it.

Even if the Spurs move they aren’t physically taking the arena. They do other things at that arena too lol
That being said, the most ideal thing is to start the process of building a new arena in a better location. Prime candidates for the current arena would be like USAA, HEB, Frost, Valero, etc.

lit was a long time ago and I was living in Austin at the time but from what I remember, the arena vote barely passed and if it had failed the Spurs would have relocated to New Orleans.
I’m guessing that there will be another vote for a new arena in the next 5 to 7 years. Without a winning team I doubt it will pass and they will move on to Austin when the lease expires in 2033.

It was 61-39, hardly a close shave. Locals realized there was no personal pain in approving the arena, and they’ll likely do it again. Time to raze the Alamodome, and build on that spot. Monster truck shows, HS all star football games, and a 3rd rate bowl game shouldn’t stand in the way of a well placed first rate NBA arena.

7 years sounds about right with 2030 being the last ditch vote and then team bails on the lease in 2031 if it fails.

True, but technically they play in Cedar Park.
IF the Spurs moved to Austin, they would probably become the Austin Spurs and then GLeague would become Cedar Park Spurs or something of that nature...I'm actually not crazy about the idea of calling them both Spurs. They used to be the Toros, which wasn't a great name but at least it was different.
That said...Austin is a college town and only cares about UT. That may be changing now that we have the Austin FC, but I think it is a long ways away from having a NBA, NFL, or MLB team.

Nah
I don't think Austin is real viability
As Dex pointed out Austin is a college sports town. Moving near Austin I think would cut attendance. People in SA are not going to drive an hour to go to a game and attendance draw from Austin would be negligible offset. I guess there is some feeling that Austin and San Antonio will merge into some sort of combined metro. I'm not seeing it, but I've been wrong before.

Quick Google search has San Antonio metro at only 200k more in population than Austin metro, and at rate of growth the capital will surpass SA by end of the '20s.
Irregardless to that fact, I refuse to believe the San Antonio leaders and voters will give up their only pro team short of 100% funding of a new arena. I can't stomach a city change even if it's 75 miles as the crow files.
The other cities - Vegas, Seatlle can wait for their expansion team. No reason for the league to permit relocation of what's the 4th most successful team (warrior's Philly era notwithstanding).

I think you are on the right track. Most NBA franchises aren't financially profitable based on their ticket sales and local advertising alone. Moving the Spurs into an even smaller market would be problematic for that reason alone, not to mention the black players prejudices against a small market with limited Black demographics. Buying a 30% interest is a guaranteed indicator of some bigger changes on the horizon. Neither ATT nor any other major company will be interested in naming rights on an arena that may be out of business in the future as a advertising space on national tv for televised games.
On the other hand, Spurs have been pretty frugal in the past in regard to sheer franchise operating profit and loss. They generally have tried to stay in a profitable zone, much to the disgust of Spurs Talk "financiers" who expect the franchise to be run as some sort of charitable public corporation that ignores the profit/loss statement. Fans demands for spending money on Superstars, no matter how unrealistic that may be, are irrelevant bullshit to the rich owners whose money talks. After all, it takes two to tango and we haven't had major superstars beating down the doors to sign here, eh?
A major corporation like Dell could be looking at national advertising on the cheap with every televised game with their naming rights costs being monetized and paid for out of a share of operating profits. Depends on the profit distribution, if any, and write-off IRS issues too complicated for Spurs Talk posters. No company like Dell is going to make a sizeable buy of stock in a privately held corporation just on a whim of Don Dell. This is a matter for the CPA advisors and no irrelevant chatter by financially ignorant Spurs Talk fans will matter.

The Alamo Dome was built as a payoff to the wealthy owners of the property who are part of the "old 400" families who have controlled SA for years via money and politics. The site was virtually unsaleable because of environmental issues about the toxicity of the land beneath the old foundry buildings. Remember how that didn't come out until after the purchase that bailed out the owners? Why did no one in power ask the questions necessary for citizens to understand what they were buying with their tax dollars? Do you think the environmental concerns should have been mentioned as a probable cause for an increase in the cost? What about parking? Sure, there is a limited amount of parking for the rich, but what huge public arena in Texas should be built without adequate parking for a normal NFL franchise? Any reputable architect should have noted/blasted the lack of parking for a 60,000 seat stadium--- and that it didn't meet NFL standards just because it would seat enough people (if you could get them there) Instead Cisneros sold the dream of an NFL franchise to gullible voters on a bond issue.
Now the Alamo Dome mostly sits empty because there are limited users, even as a convention center or occasional Bowl game to make it more than a beached whale. It was totally unsuitable for a NBA stadium as well, so the gullible voters went for another deal out by the old Stock Show arena. I agree that the Convention Center complex downtown could use a more marketable facility, but how many times will the voters buy into the pitch that "this is what we need to keep the Spurs and add to the value of our convention business." We paid for the old Hemisphere Arena uplift disaster and then the Alamo Dome disaster and now the ATT arena out in the boonies. Doesn't it ever register that we are being led by the nose to benefit the rich?

Private profit, public cost is the operating model of American professional sports. I wouldn't vote for us to build the Spurs a new arena either but I'm fine with not having professional sports here under this business model where cities get extorted every 20 years by millionaires and billionaires. I love the Spurs but that's horseshit that we're supposed to give them likely more than half a billion dollars in the next decade to build them a new stadium that benefits only them. Let Austin build them an arena, or Anaheim, or if Seattle wants to be stupid they can have the team too if the Spurs are going to demand we pay for their arena again.

I would vote for it as I would like SA to have at least one pro sports franchise. If there is a new arena vote and it fails and they choose Austin as a new home I would be okay with it. Would probably go to only the weekend home games but that’s how I started out as a Spurs fan growing up in Austin traveling to SA on the weekends for games.

There is so much false nonsense in this “history” that it would take a month to unwrap it all. I’ll start simply with your contention that the Alamodome sits empty. They have events at the dome all the time. Football, basketball, home and garden, Disney on Ice, Monster Trucks, fights, music concerts, graduations, religious conventions, corporate events. Plus it gives the city a venue for national events like Final Fours. They’re playing soccer there today and all the lots are full. You speak from a position of ignorance.

As long as primarily out of towners pay for it via hotel/ rental car tax, I couldn’t give a fuck. If it takes tourists and business travelers to dig deeper into their pockets to keep our Spurs here, so be it.

When DG first came to San Antonio, he apparently dated my best buddy's cousin for a while. I never got to meet him, but crazy to think of some friend that I used to go run around Splashtown with dating an NBA star...it's a small world I guess.
I also worked at Academy by Northwoods when I was younger...saw some Spurs there. George Gervin used to come in all the time just to look at the fishing stuff. Saw Sean Elliott and Devin Brown come through, too.

Nice. Got to meet 3 of the 4 dudes you just named. Met Danny at a Longhorns basketball game when UNC was in town a few years back. He was sitting almost right behind me. He was pissed that security wouldn’t let him on the floor to talk to the Carolina players after the game lol.
Met Sean Elliott and his wife a UT football game. He was sitting right in the aisle seat so had to say hi.
Met Devin Brown at the Best Buy at The Rim once too a few years ago. He seemed chill.
Still haven’t met the Iceman though. Hope to run into him sometime. I’ve heard he’s cool as hell.

Haha nice. Yeah it was a night flight back from Vegas and the cabin of the plane kept flashing and I was like what's going on and it turns out fans were walking up to his seat and asking for photos. Ice was so gracious to all the fans bet the poor guy just wanted to have a quiet flight.

^ off topic but while we are doing this:
- David Robinson and Malik Rose on their balconies from the river walk morning after GM 1 99’ Finals. I guess in those days all the players stayed in the same hotel even at home during the finals. Believe the hotel was called Mansion.
- the majority of the 07-08 Spurs at Century Room in Toronto after a Raps game. Last game before AS weekend and the whole team was out drinking waters. Met Duncan and saw Ginobilli, Finely, Oberto, Bowen. Only players that weren’t there if I recall correctly were Parker, Barry and Horry.
- Robert Horry in 2012 at the Cosmo pool in Vegas. He was solo turning up no lie.
- Antonio Daniels at Tony Romas ribs on the riverwalk in 2000.
- Dany Green twice: once when I sat court-side in Detroit in 2017, he rode the bike most of the game as he was dealing with an injury so we chopped it up a little. Saw him summer 2019 cruising Gastown in Vancouver, just after the Raps won the title. He had an autograph signing at the Rexall later that day right by my building.

I used to be a construction carpenter. I was hired to install a custom waterbed for Tony Parker and Eva Longoria. She was barely there and walking around in skimpy outfits when I was there, never really spoke to me or made eye contact. Tony started to be very demanding asking me to move the bed frame after it was almost done. He called my work shitty when I asked for some money for the materials and then threw me out waving a weapon. He even kept my tools which is illegal btw. Anyway I managed to get back in the house and I find this homemade tape in their safe. I decided to leave it alone once I saw what happened to the other guy that sold a tape like this one.
