Abbot's "fix" for the energy grid is taxing wind and giving handouts to natural gas and coal.

Beto is exaggerating.

If GOP voter suppression works as designed in Texas and elsewhere, it won't be the end of democracy, it'll be a reversion to the historical norm.

toothess, unenforced legislation, and a "pretty please" letter

Gov. Abbott releases letter of demands for PUC, ERCOT to improve power grid

The bills’ key focus was “weatherization,” requiring an upgrade to power generators and transmission lines to prepare for any “extreme weather” as well as a change in ERCOT’s governance.

Failure to adhere to the “weatherization” regulation, could result in

a fine up to $1 million, :lol Texas electricity is $100Bs

“While these laws significantly reform Texas’ energy and electric power market, more can be done to increase power generation capacity and to ensure the reliability of the Texas power grid.”

Abbott goes on to say the following items are to be adopted immediately.

Below is a list of his demands: :lol

Streamline incentives :lol within the ERCOT market to foster the development and maintenance of adequate and reliable sources of power, like natural gas, coal, and nuclear power.
Allocate reliability costs to generation resources that cannot guarantee their own availability, such as wind or solar power.
Instruct ERCOT to establish a maintenance schedule for natural gas, coal, nuclear, and other non-renewable electricity generators to ensure that there is always an adequate supply of power on the grid to maintain reliable electric service for all Texans.
Order ERCOT to accelerate the development of transmission projects that increase connectivity between existing or new dispatchable generation plants and arcas of need.

So people can still freeze to death due to incompetence and $1M fine will square everything (at least for state as they keep the funds).

Guess backup plan for texans is to prepare for unscheduled trips to cancun in winter and leave pets to fend for themselves.

But outside the building? I mean having to flee the State? At what point it becomes false arrest, kidnapping, etc?

It should but as long as it exists I hope New York gerrymanders the fuck out of its upstate districts this year. Right now NY is 19-8 and it wouldn’t be all that challenging to draw a 23-3 map with the population losses in upstate.

Will Hunting

Also it’d be hilarious if Illinois actually puts Cuckzinger, Mary Miller and Rodney Davis in the same district.

SCOTUS denied to take the gerrymandering case, so for the first time "partisan" gerrymandering will rule. Repugs will choose the voters, not voters choosing the candidate.

To take the House in 2022, the fascist Repugs will gerrymander every red/Confederate state to purge all Dem reps.

The Republican-authored legislation would require voters to submit either their driver’s license number or a partial Social Security number when applying to vote by mail.

That number would then be cross-checked with the state’s voter-registration database.

Most applicants would be fine, because almost 90 percent of all registered Texas voters have both their Social Security number and driver’s license number in the database.

However, 1.9 million voters—about 11 percent of the total—have only one of the two numbers on file with the state.

most of the voters with only one number on file wouldn’t remember which number they filed, often many years earlier, and would have to guess.

“You have a 50 percent chance of the voter guessing wrong,” said Davis.

Guess wrong and your application would be rejected, even if it’s been twenty years since you used your Social Security or driver’s license number to register to vote.

“I challenge any person on the committee:

do you remember what you filled out when you got your voter registration? I certainly don’t. And I’m in the business of this.

And if [the numbers] don’t match, we’re rejecting.”

Some 11 percent of Texas voters cast their ballots by mail in 2020 (https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-absentee-voting-looked-like-in-all-50-states/), so if that percentage held up in future elections,

209,000 of the 1.9 million voters with only one ID number on file with the state would be requesting mail-in ballots.

If most of those voters are guessing which ID number to cite on their application,

and they have a 50 percent chance of guessing correctly,

then 104,500 of them would have their applications rejected.

Some of these voters might find other ways to vote, including in person.

But some with serious disabilities, or those who have to be out of state during the period when polls are open, would be out of luck.

They are setting

new rules for voting by mail,

boosting the role of partisan poll watchers and

rolling back local initiatives meant to make it easier to vote —

specifically those championed by Harris County that were disproportionately used by voters of color —

while expanding access in more conservative, rural areas.

Changes to the Texas election process in SB 1 include

It will become a state jail felony for local election officials to send unsolicited applications to request a mail-in ballot.

The state currently uses a signature matching process to verify completed ballots. :lol

strengthen the autonomy of partisan poll watchers at polling places by granting them “free movement” within a polling place,

The bill would establish new requirements — and possible criminal penalties — for those who assist voters who need help filling out their ballots, including voters with disabilities.

The person assisting must fill out new paperwork disclosing their relationship to the voter.

Assistants must also recite an expanded oath, now under the penalty of perjury, stating they did not “pressure or coerce” the voter into choosing them for assistance.

Texas strengthens abortion ban, outlaws abortifacient drugs after 7 weeks

“A bill adding more restrictions and raising criminal penalties for the use of abortion-inducing medication in Texas goes into effect in December after being signed with no fanfare by Gov. Greg Abbott (R),” the Dallas Morning News (https://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/2021/09/20/gov-greg-abbott-signs-more-texas-abortion-restrictions-penalties-into-law/) reports.

“Senate Bill 4, which passed during the second special session that adjourned Sept. 2, has been decried as a ‘back-door ban on abortion’ by Planned Parenthood officials because it outlaws providing abortion-inducing drugs to Texans after seven weeks of pregnancy.”
