Gonna be honest and say I haven’t heard of this guy. I’m assuming he is on their national team so I should be able to see him play Thursday.

Hollinger…
The Saint Mary’s product has reportedly turned down multiple big-money offers in Europe because he’s awaiting his shot at the NBA after shooting 38.9 percent from 3 and being one of the best interior players in Australia’s NBL last season. Jock Landale will get a further opportunity to audition when he suits up for the Australian team at the Olympics. While questions persist about his ability to defend in space, Landale’s size and touch around the basket at 6-11, 255 have obvious appeal for teams looking for another big body.

Wow, I like him. He's a big, mean center (something like 6-foot-11 and 260 pounds) but he has a pretty slick three-point stroke.

I didn't think he'd be a great fit on the Spurs because he's tough to fit on top of Poeltl and Eubanks but he's legitimately good.

Jock belongs in the NBA. He has always played really well for the Boomers in international play. His NBL stuff is good, not great so I'm always pleasantly surprised watching him play for the Boomers. He is nothing like Baynes who was surprisingly athletic for a guy with his body, but he does have a much better feel for the game. I like the signing, Jock can definitely be a 15mpg backup in the NBA.

Pros
Runs the floor, every single time.
Good offensive rebounder with nice touch in the key on finishes.
Plays with a lot of energy and hustle. Bit of an angry guy.
Decent but inconsistent 3pt shooter, definitely not gunshy.
Basic but decisive moves in the post.
Shows flashes passing and operating from elbows.

Cons
Bit limited athletically.
Decision making is an issue, can be turnover prone.
Not the strongest defending the post.
Bit of an angry guy.
Tends to foul a lot on switches.
I'm not sure if he can stretch out to NBA range and hit 33-35%.
Will never be a big gravity guy.

So he can shoot a bit. Can he guard the perimeter?

Eubanks' deal for this year just became guaranteed? Next year is still non-guaranteed? Between him, this guy, KBD and our 2nd round pick not clear who will be a two-way, etc. I know Jeffries was waived before his deal became guaranteed.

timvp
08-03-2021, 08:24 PM
Wonder how much the Spurs had to pay him. He was gaining a lot of momentum playing for Australia.

This contract could be anywhere from minimum to a two-year, $8-10M. Difficult to tell.

MI21
08-03-2021, 08:26 PM
Jock is also a really confident guy, he won't be phased making the jump to the NBA and will not be intimidated by the step up. I'm excited, I think Spurs fans will like him - though Pop will bench him for a month at some point forgetting into a scuffle, that I guarantee.

I'm hoping the other Aussie big man Nick Kay gets picked up somewhere too - he is an ultimate connector type, still quite young and has shown huge improvement in the last 3 years. Different to Jock, but belongs in the NBA just the same.

MoSpur02
08-03-2021, 08:26 PM
A mean streak is a nice addition. Something the Spurs have lacked and desperately need.

Regarding him being angry, that's the first thing I thought of :lol

Of the "character" guys, he's for sure the angriest. His rep is he's a good dude off the court but that he's also a bit arrogant and isn't above trash talking. He supposedly thinks he not only should be in the NBA but that he should have already been in the NBA for years now.

Ingles was such a no brainer and would have been perfect for the beautiful game :cry

Jock is apparently a great guy off the court - I have friends that deal with him regularly and they have nothing but nice things to say. But his style on the court is kind of like the "annoying hustle guy who tries hard but has no skill" except he has skill. It's a good signing, potentially very good - I would be surprised if he fails. I would much rather pay him that any one of the 20 random backups that cycle through teams and provide nothing except a bit of strength and the odd bit of vertical spacing.

Ingles was such a no brainer and would have been perfect for the beautiful game :cryAh, man, that would have been amazing.

I would much rather pay him that any one of the 20 random backups that cycle through teams and provide nothing except a bit of strength and the odd bit of vertical spacing.Yeah, I like that he has an edge. He's not super skilled so having that Australian toughness in him is actually an asset, tbh.

Eubanks has his work cut out for him keeping that backup spot. Poeltl should be safe as the starter but I'd give Jock a 1-2% chance of being the starter in a year or two.

The Zollins signing starting to make more sense. Throw together Zollins, Jock, Eubanks, Poeltl at the wall and one of them should emerge as an above average, quality starter. Zollins being sidelined also gives you a chance to look at Jock and Eubanks before eventually having to move on from one of them.

DJ
White
Keldon
Young
Landale

Damn, that lineup would be, at the very least, really fun to watch :tu

This would be a good line up but I doubt Pop starts Landale.

I would like to see a line up of

DJM
Walker
McD
KJ
Poeltl

White
Vassell
Luka
Young
Landale

No, they're not similar. Zollins is more of a PF whose main strength is being super mobile for someone as long as he is. Before his ankle exploded, the hope was that his mobility and perimeter skill (passing and shooting) would make him a strong starter -- but more of a fifth option starter.

Jock is mostly a burly interior player. Good hands, big dude, strong, not that athletic but athletic enough to finish. He can also shoot threes with a good-looking stroke. Not especially skilled, not especially mobile but plays with an edge and has good awareness and basketball IQ.

Yeah, I don't think Jock would start but that could be a fivesome that fits together. Thad Young is good but before Jock, there was no center to pair him with. Thad and Poeltl will be tough because neither can shoot.

If Australia beats the USA, Landale will be a big reason why. The US doesn’t have a match up for him.
Crazy 24 hrs.
Nick Kay is another Aussie to watch too. Undersized for a C, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him make a mistake.
Always seemingly in the right place.

In the local comp he was the focal point of his teams offense , where with the boomers hes adjusted to a lesser role in regards to shots. Mainly screen setting, rebounding, running and spreading the floor. The impact he having however hasn't changed.. He also been the boomers anchor on defense since Baynes went down. Again has not wilted, rebounding, helping out on d and hustling like crazy.

Abig reason why boomers are undefeated so far.

A very good sign for the spurs

He had a solid career in college and only went undrafted because of teams going away from bruising, "plodding" interior big men.

If his three - point shooting can translate to the NBA, then the Spurs just found the next Big Banger. He'll likely take away minutes from Eubanks to which I'm sure many people on ST will be happy about.
