Extremely tough circumstances with three important players joining late. No player other than KD stepping up and playing like a legit star. Early losses. Doubt mounting.
Gold.

Yep, even though I've been so harsh on him for years (at one point I really did believe he was the best of all-time, but the past 5 or 6 years I have really disagreed with a lot of what he's done/been doing. Sorry to digress), I wanted these guys to win for him. If someone else was coaching Team USA, I probably wouldn't have went for them at all since I'm not from the US, but this time around, despite the players on the team, I knew how much he's wanted to coach the Olympics, so I set my differences aside with these guys and went for them (I have even gained an appreciation in the process for some of these players I never had before due to rivalries in the past). Congrats to Pop on coaching/helping the USA Basketball Team to win the Gold.

Chuck Daily (2), Rudy Tomjanovich (2) :lol But yeah, Pop got the most NBA Championship (5).
But this Olympic Gold is the most deserving with all the adversities, with only 1 true 1st tier star in KD, the late minute “patch up” roster, very short period of time preparation, going against teams with most NBA players. I mean this victory was sweet and really earned. To coach the US Team to actually play TEAM basketball, instead of just throwing Superteam out there, and making that preparation in a VERY short time. He really got KD to buy in on getting coached, to get everybody else to follow (reminiscent of Timmy and the Spurs). KD was great, but hands down to Coach Pop to make it happen. Well deserved. The GOAT.

That's what the Olympics are all about. It's easy to get siloed into the Spurs mindset and come to hate these guys who we go to battle with, but for one short tournament we get to root for all these different players and see them come together as a team.
It's okay, we can go back to hating KD and Dray and all the others in a couple months, but right now they are team USA.

Even without KD this team should have cruised to the gold. Team US never seems to have the same chemistry as their international competition.
i mean why is Rubio outplaying Lillard? Why is Book so quiet. I think most guys just don’t take pride in the olympics because they didn’t grow up caring about it. I think coach K was better at lighting fires under these guys asses

Tatum really was the dark horse who bailed us out when Durant wasn’t on the floor. He balled out. Still kinda surprised that Lillard was playing as shaky as he was. If we had NBA Lilliard US blows out most of these teams

KD is a funny guy. Definitely balled out for USA, good to see him enjoying the moment.
He has a funny little moment with Udoka and Patty at 4:00. "That's my teammate yo!"

I hate Green and everyone else on that squad except Keldon and Pop, of course, but it's cool to see the respect after the media tried to instigate shit with the players and Pop that was nothing but bullshit.

i don't know if it's pride .. but for me an armchair analyst, it seems like it would be tough for a bunch of grade A Alphas to get thrown together and then have to learn, understand, and accept their roles to make the team better, when they are each used to being the number one alpha dog. It's like 5 DDRs not knowing what to do when he's not taking the ball up the court ... he just stands in the corner and waits for his moment.
i think pop's coaching in this olympics is underrated (and overrated) ... like his career. but the bottom line is, scoreboard bitches, gold medal baby
winning fixes everything

Agreed. This board will go back to hating Pop in a few months when he plays stupid lineups such as having Keldon play center. Right now you have a lot of Spur fans suffering from euphoria in the sense that there has been nothing to celebrate the last 4 years since Kawhi left and they need something to celebrate hence why they are blowing Pop right now.
Yeah, fuck that noise. I am going to enjoy a young Spur and an old coach getting the gold.

I really think that’s it’s the continuity of these other teams playing together whereas team USA seems to always look totally off at times. I wondered the same thing about Lillard, he at times looked lost. But i always think back to 2012 when Spain took prime Kobe,Lebrun,Wade, and Melo down to the wire under Coach K. These other teams just seem to sometimes play more in tune with each other than the US. It’s almost like the superstars on the US teams sometimes forget how to play alongside other stars or something

Draymond Green, feeling good after ceremony, wraps arm around Keldon Johnson. “We got a young 21-year-old they said shouldn’t be here. They gave Pop sh*t for it. And he brought more energy than anybody. That’s what we needed.”

... well yeah, the national teams all grow up playing together and know their roles, and play a more physical game on the regular. They're always going to have that as their chance to offset the huge USA talent advantage, but we've known that since the 2000s when Spain, France, and Argentina came up

It's like a lot of idiots on here are completely forgetting his ineptitude for the past few years. SMH. A fucking JV coach could win gold with American talent that actually gives a shit and doesn't think it's going to be handed to them.

Welp, guess I'm a KD fan now. Bailed out a team full of all-stars. Didn't flinch when Pop yelled at him. Took Keldon under his wing. And did all that a couple weeks after his NBA season ended, a season which was his first back from an achilles rupture. He had every excuse not to even go to the Olympics. Pretty impressive, tbh.
He's by far the best player to come out of Prince George's County, Maryland, so I've always had a love - hate feeling for him (being I'm from PG but a Spurs fan).
Still he proved why he's an all - time great (better than Kobe, IMHO) and led the team to a gold medal.
Props to Pop, Durant, KJ, Middleton , Holiday and everyone else on or involved with team USA!
Coach Pop joined rarefied air and deserves all the adoration and love.

Durant put it out there. As a fellow longhorn I was excited to watch him play in person once a long time ago at UT.
He's an amazing HOF player and I do appreciate the fact that he showed up three times to be the top guy on three gold medal teams.
Now that he is in the Eastern Conference he's a less of a pain in the neck to my Spurs fan mode that is always first and foremost.

This is the same guy who said that Middleton was Batman and Giannis what Robin.
Then he came back around and defended that take, even after Giannis dropped 50 to win the championship.
Kendrick Perkins thinks he's going to be the next Stephen A Smith by delivering these "hot takes", but SAS actually fucking knows something about basketball.

The outright pride for this country is not there like it used to be. To be honest, these players are more about themselves and their dollars than their country. TBH, I don't totally blame them, but at the same time, they are not soldiers. So their call to arms is on the court. I would like to see more desire, passion, fire, drive, and selflessness from our players. I want them to want to drive home with extreme prejudice that the USA is the most dominant basketball nation on the planet. I want them to behave like brothers, as other nations do.

Gregg Popovich had message for critics after Team USA gold: 'How the f*** you like us now?' (yahoo.com) (https://www.yahoo.com/sports/gregg-popovich-has-message-for-critics-after-team-usa-gold-how-the-f-you-like-us-now-211824270.html)

WTF?! Come on now, Pop. Nothing beats 2014 after what the team and their fans went through in 2013. I know the Olympics is at a global stage but the competition was weaker and Pop's chances of winning were greater than our chances were in 2014. Pop spent most of his coaching career with TD, Manu and TP and to see them win their final championship should trounce this Olympic run fielding a team of guys who he hasn't spent nearly as much time and who mostly used to talk shit about Pop and the Spurs before. He must of just got caught up in the moment and doesn't really feel this way now.

Could any coach have taken this 2021 Tokyo team to the gold? No way!

I'm really glad for Pop. He's in a different place in his life than he was back in 2014. He's lost his wife, the Spurs dynasty is over, and he's certainly at an age where he's feeling his mortality. I'm sure this victory was special for him for a number of reasons.
I was impressed by KD and how he took the U.S. team on his shoulders and carried them to victory. Draymond was great as well. And I do think Keldon brought some genuine excitement and energy that these guys needed.

Well put.
To add to that, I know a lot of posters around here give Pop shit for his political outlook, but you could tell that the Trump presidency and other recent social events took a grind on him. COVID is just the latest in that trend, and is one that potentially could threaten to end his life as a senior citizen. You aren't that outspoken about things if they don't weigh on you personally.
If this is his swan song, what a way to go out. Military veteran wins gold medal and avenges the loss from 2004 (which was more on Larry Brown imo). I don't think he was lying when he said how special it was to him...he's wanted that gold for a long time.
Pop needs to come back for one more year, get that all-time coaching record for good measure, and I would say there is nothing left for him to accomplish.

With the Olympics in 2024, he might be willing to take another swing at it. I'd actually like to see him retire from the Spurs after this season or next then be the full time USANT coach through the next games.
