After the 2 goals vs Ireland his totals are:

111 goals in 180 games

92 (!) goals in 129 official games

Did anyone care about this when it was the iranian guy??

Modern players play way more games than those of the past, puskas and pele are both at like 80 in 85 games, more impressive imo.. then you consider he has 7 goals in 4 world cups- muller had 14 in 2, ronaldo had 15 in 4, pele 12 in 14 wc games.. Maradona scored 34 goals in 91 games for argentina, well 8 of them came in 4 world cups (one famously cut short, another famously played on one leg).

Ronaldo and messi are great but their stats are inflated imo

Take Pele for example, he's the all time goals leader but played his whole career in Brazil and the US.

How are his numbers not inflated, compared to players who spent their whole careers playing in top tier european leagues against better competition?

well i mostly agree that pele's numbers are inflated, but it depends a little what count you use. According to him he scored 1000+, but that includes friendlies and a lot of lesser tournaments (brasil has several leagues and most teams participate in multiple competitions each year). Much like the NT all time scorer label, its only a thing if the guy with the record is a superstar, otherwise no one mentions it (no one considers Bican or Ali among the best scorers ever).

but you are wrong about european leagues being top tier and having better competition- certainly they do now, but not quite true in the 50, 60, 70's when the money just wasnt there, europe was still recovering from WW2 and south american teams regulary won both national and club competitions vs their european counterparts.

but the topic of this thread was national team goals, have a look at pele's and ronaldo's victims, tell me who benefitted more from weaker competition:

pele 12 goals in 14 wc games vs ussr, wales, france, sweden, mexico, Czechoslovakia, bulgaria, portugal, czechoslovakia, england, romania, peru, uruguay, italy

ronaldo 7 in 17 wc games vs angola, iran, holland, england, france, germany, ivory coast, north korea, brasil, spain, germany, usa, ghana, spain, morocco, iran, uruguay

i think pele would have feasted on teams like iran and north korea, 3 of ronaldo's 7 goals came against them...

almost every team's top goal scorer ever is from this era, and they have more total goals than the previous record holder but usually 2x or even 3x more games, like i said their stats are inflated because they play a lot more games now.

Very few of of the teams Ronaldo scored against never classified for the World Cup or Euro Championship. Andorra, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, Cyprus and that’s probably it. Macedonia made it to Euro 2020. Ronaldo never scored against San Marino.

well if i look at the list of his top victims its:

7 lithuania
6 sweden
5 andorra
5 latvia
5 luxemburg

outside of sweden im not seeing much quality there.. even the concacaf teams like usa, mexico, costa rica, panama easily outclass the rest.

but the point isnt ronaldo, this happens everywhere. Just the other day Memphis Depay overtook johan cruyff for national team goals (already passed van basten). again im not saying it to hate, hes a good player, but hes scoring more because hes playing a lot more games, not because hes a better scorer. Giroud has more national team goals than platini! klose more than muller! and on and on i can go like this

People complain about tap-ins, but football is a lot about instinct and positioning. The second goal showed a lot of skill. If it were easy others would score as much. Today in the United game, Ronaldo was able to score crucial goals to break the 0:0 and the 1:1, with minimal training with his new teammates.

But it’s true Ronaldo doesn’t score internationally at the same pace as let’s say Puskas, Pelé or Gerd Muller and his record is due to him being able to play in more than 180 games, with 36 and no signs of slowing down.

In Pelé’s time they also played with 4:2:4 formations. Left and right backs, 2 center backs, 1 defensive midfielder, 1 attacking midfielder, 2 wingers, second striker (that was Pelé) and a center forward. Perhaps they were able to score more goals as defensive systems weren’t so advanced.

In more modern times, Ronaldo Nazario and Romario were scoring at staggering pace, but Ronaldo Nazario wasn’t able to stay healthy and Romario wasn’t very professional and had a lot of conflicts, also it was near impossible to play for the Brazilian NT for more than 100 games in that times. Then the talent diluted and it’s a different story nowadays.

There are a lot of factors why Ronaldo managed to become #1 in international goals, but to his credit he was able to play so many games and to score 111 over almost 20 years.

That's what was actually smart about him. Went to a team with Dive Maria, MBappe, etc... they can all run back quick on defense...

But the problem isn't there. This team has a terrible problem creating offense.

Man U sold a huge number of tickets with the Ronaldo to be subbed.
They had to bring him back for the old times. Is he a significant addition from winning soccer point of view?
NO.
This will not get them better that Chelsea, Liverpool, or MC. They know this.
They want the blond kid, badly. Will it get them into the top 4. Yep, with or without him.
Guarantee if MU was asked to give up Greenwood; (just turned adult) no way the deal is made.

And really if Ronaldo plays and teaches... the teaching and his hard work is what they want their kids to see. Because the dude does work his butt off. He is just much older and slower but still has a cannon for a leg.

In fairness Messi was like that with Valverde as well.

I think Poch won’t last the season and neither will Ole. The question is who is the best to take over for either of those coaches. Conte?

One plays as a 9 and the other as a 10.

That stats are misleading.

Ronaldo doesn’t play as 9 often, but mostly as left winger. For Ferguson he played left midfielder mostly, and in his first stint with United he didn’t score as many goals.

Messi is mostly right winger, sometimes played as false 9. I’m not sure if he played 10 (attacking midfielder).

It makes total sense why such few teams wanted Ronaldo. If not for that moron Ferguson (who also got Moyes hired) United would have been much better off not giving $500,000 a week to Ronaldo. A nostalgic signing that is ruining them. United finished second last season in the EPL and now they’re struggling to even get a Europa qualifying spot.

Brighton and Graham Potter... have been watching these guys for two years now and this manager Potter needs his brain picked. The style this team plays and now with the results they are getting with mediocre players (at best) is somewhat beautiful. Down 3- 0 to Liverpool and then get a handball to disallow the third goal and this team comes roaring back and is legit beating Liverpool at their own game without a less advanced press and tying the game at Anfield. Then Brighton tries to break presses from the back and are willing to suffer the consequences but the flow of the entire team can be amazing. They have a way of working closely together with little one touch passes finding their way out of very difficult situations. And then spread out and make longer passes and then really good passing again close to the opponents goal.

I very much doubt Brighton will make the top 6 but Potter has something he has done exceptionally well to work his way up to this level. He will probably not get a look from the big teams because he has not coached the "big spoiled" players but every league needs more guys like this. Last year they could not finish out games but the system and the way the players accepted it and played it was notable but because the record was not very good no big props. This year they are coming from behind and winning or tying games and I just cant find any English soccer dudes that explain what he does to do him justice. Would love to spend a week in their training camp and have a listen.

I think Potter looks for very smart players that are technically gifted but not necessarily great players and they appear to love the style. The one exceptional player, Eve Bissouma, I have no idea how they kept him over the summer.

Ronaldo's easily the most clutch and most dominant player of all time. He can play in any country, league or system and you know he's gonna produce regardless.

Midget was very much a product of Xavi, Iniesta and Pep. The fact that he's never won a CL without at least one of those 3 and he's struggling immensely in a farmers league, while Ronaldo's still playing and scoring at an elite level at the age of 36, shows you how much Ronaldo is light years ahead of Harden imho.

Messi without goals can still be MOTM, Ronaldo without goals has very little impact. But props to your boy bynumite.

And that farmers league (along with the Portuguese league) has knocked Ronaldo out of CL

You can also argue teams look far worse without Messi than they do without Ronaldo. Juventus have topped their group while Barca may not even get out of theirs. Awful take, United's problems are mostly defensive, Maguire should never be a starter in a top half EPL team. Which is why they needed a Ronaldo hat trick to beat a trash Spurs team in the first place.

Scored his 807 goal, but is also number 1 in international goals (115), number 1 in champion league goals (140) and number 1 by far in goals of such storied club as Real Madrid with 451. I’m not sure why people laugh at the idea of Ronaldo being the GOAT.

Ronaldo will not be with MU next year because he walks around on defense.
He is 37 yo and cant get close to playing a full 90 minutes in this league game after game.
They absolutely will get rid of him.
Mark it down.

And I dont look at games the way as supporters of teams who are always in the top. I like watching the game.
I love Ronaldo's ability on the offensive end. Probably the best player to be able to score the greatest variety of goals.
But in the EPL shouting at everyone else to run and point while you just stand there?

He is so gone. He needs a strong team with a part time role. MU does not need him. they need more than this.
You obviously dont whatch MU play nor do you understand the EPL and his situation on this particular team.

Didn’t Atlético take out Liverpool few seasons ago? It was within possibilities for United to get eliminated and within the possibilities for Atlético to avoid being victimized by Ronaldo once again.

I saw Pelé play only once, was with Cosmos in ‘77, couldn’t believe some were saying he was the GOAT. He was walking in mid-field, only after I understood he was 37 and that Pelé was indeed the GOAT. Same age as Ronaldo. It’s amazing he can still make hat tricks, but just can’t bring his top game every game like before.

Everything is 'within the possibilities', that's why the games are played. If you ask me, Pele was always overrated, tbh, played in an era of unathletic players and had absolutely world class teammates like Garrincha.

Ronaldo, IMHO, is easily top 5 of his generation or maybe top 20 all time, which is absolutely a great place to be. Not sure why Ronaldo-fans feel threatened by that, tbh.

I would have a really difficult time ranking this Ronaldo ahead of el fenomeno Ronaldo, for example. Or even Zidane, another top 20 all time player.

.

This.

They are still both fantastic technicians.
But in this game when you cant really move or have the stamina needed like you used to...
And what manager who really cares wants to deal with a player who can dominate on the practice field during shooting practice wowing everyone, and then gets on the pitch and stands unless his team gains control of the ball near goal. And with those huge reputations.

Honestly a team like Chelsea could use Ronaldo during the last 20 minutes if they were down.
But NO WAY, no fkn way is Ronaldo going to be allowed to walk on defense with coach Thomas T. Those guys up front run their asses off and then are removed after being completely spent after 70 or 75 minutes. Its demanded. This is what you must do, be fast over a torturous period of time.

If you watch the whole game it’s clear how useless Ronaldo can be over extended times.
He got the ball in a clear area he had climbed into, made a 10 meter run, and said to himself “I got 30 more meters to go, pass.”
He can’t run at a defense from longer ways out like he used to. He would terrorize teams from the wing. He is still incredible good closer to the goal, but a significant part of why he was so dangerous is absolutely gone. People just don’t want to admit it.

He still would make a great early exit or late sub player for the right team.

If you got excited about Kobe scoring a huge number of points in his last year with the Lakers go for it.
Look at his last game against Denver and where LA finished and it should make you feel good.
Kobe would NOT take a minor role to help a TEAM win either.

Harden? Is that supposed to be Messi? I got no qualms in the obvious. Messi does not play defense either. And he might not be a full 90 minute player either, have not seen him enough. I have watched almost every EPL game Ronaldo has been in this year. He does not play defense and he cannot run at a defense for a distance and last a whole game. Its just the truth. MU fans see it. They still love the goals. They just know he is not a starter like a number of other players they have. RONALDO was supposed to get them into the Champions League at the very least. They did it the year before so....? What happened... ? Part of what happened was Ronaldo.

Just recognize his role now. MC would be happy to bring Ronaldo on at 70 minutes in a game where they needed a goal.

Also, Barca have routinely been spanked by Real in recent years. This season, they won 4-0 at the Barnabeu without Harden.

Ronaldo helped lead MU right out of the CL with all his hand waving players to spots while he just stood around waiting for a through ball that he could never carry 40 yards. The way he scored this year was his enormous skill closer to the goal, not as his old winger swoop ins where he would just terrify defenders wide.
He needs a minor role as a goal scorer on a new team. MU does not need him to lead anything. They need big changes and time.

I know Pep would use him the last 20 minutes to score to close out or win a game or even get them back in one. If MU keeps him and he leads them to a top 4 finish then their new coach is GOD. Or he brings in a bunch of new players that can use a last 20 minute scorer.

edit: free kicks, Ronaldo can still be a terror. He still has a cannon of a leg.

Ronaldo did have a better season but a quarter of his goals were for Norwich and the entire attack is built around him whereas Psg are rightfully built to serve mbappe. Messi’s goal scoring was shit but still one of the best playmakers in Europe.

As for Ronaldo, he’s achieved TOSB status as teams are starting to figure out he makes you worse whereas united were second the season prior and top 3 in scoring and got worse in every category since Ronaldo joined. I mean this speaks volumes:

It was a bad decision to keep him when he wanted to leave some months ago. United didn’t classify for the Champions where he could add some goals to his resume or try do some heroics in difficult games, also since he doesn’t press at this point in his career, doesn’t count much for the manager.

Since he left for Juventus, his career wasn’t the same. I understand was facing jail time in Spain, but really couldn’t expect Madrid to pay for his taxes problems. Still made like 100 goals at Juventus, but the team wasn’t very successful during this period and failed to win the champions.

I think he’s good at United, perhaps needs more patience and try do what the manager wants. When he wanted out, it was difficult to find a better team. Bayern Munich didn’t want to pay so high salaries, Atlético didn’t want him and neither could afford his salaries, Chelsea was in problems with Abramovich being expelled from the UK, PSG wanted to resign MBappé first and foremost besides have Neymar at left extreme, Milan and Inter don’t sign so expensive players anymore.

I think he was playing well last season, just got tired of other players missing tap ins from his good assists, never gets the ball back in the area or proper assists. He wanted out some months ago, but Chelsea was in ownership problems and couldn’t sign him. On defense he walks much less than Messi, actually do pressure. Hopefully he will make a switch in the winter transfer window.

Even the recent “excellent” 2:0 game United had vs the Spurs, they missed a LOT of chances.

Ronaldo was good last season, despite his teammates missing tap ins after good Ronaldo’s assists and never passing the ball back in the area. He wanted out in the summer window, right now, the situation is bad. I think he could still be a solid contributor, even with high pressure style, but he doesn’t command the same type of salaries as before.

If he were to ask for more reasonable salary, he would definitely find a good team.

People say he failed in Juventus, yet he scored more than 100 goals in three seasons most of which in a defensive oriented league, out of which 14 goals were in the Champions League. In his previous United season where he didn’t play regularly he scored 24 goals, the most of any United player.

Cannot be Zlatan, Lukaku, Cavani and Ronaldo all suck, but United is a great club.

United and the Glazers has sucked for a decade and sucked when he arrived so that can't be an excuse for him undermining his manager and destabilizing his teammates on the club and national level. He could have went to city or anywhere else...and chose United.

Italian was that not defensive at all when Ronaldo played there.

I wouldn't say he failed at Juventus but he has been taking a lot of L's ever since he left Madrid which was a stupid move. His own ego and lack of hubris led to this glorious downfall and now that he's finished and should retire he has no idea how to deal with it.

Ronaldo wanted to be treated like Messi in Barça. It was unrealistic to expect Real Madrid was to pay for his tax evasion fines. Also the salary he was offered was fair but not at what Messi was being paid, which down the road will force Barcelona’s socios to sell the club, unless the club increase it’s revenue to unheard levels.

Though, you may be right about the Serie A no longer being an defensive league.

But let’s see what Ronaldo does after leaving United. Zlatan, Lukaku and Cavani all do fine after being proclaimed done at United. Zlatan is even older than Cristiano. How can we know he’s done when doesn’t even play this season.

As long as his salary doesn’t prevent the team of signing other good players he should do well, imo. He won’t make 50 goals a season, but 30 maybe yes. Why would retire then? Not so many forwards make 30 goals a season in their prime.

Since Ferguson has left, United sink into mediocrity. Top salaries, but apparently very toxic atmosphere. Even in Ronaldo’s first stint with United, things didn’t go all that well, hence he moved to Madrid.

All of Argentina were shit against Saudi Arabia, but Ronaldo was anonymous (yes, worse than Messi) against both Uruguay (can't handle South American teams) and Ghana like Messi all he had was a penalty, except that was a BS penalty, far worse than the one Messi had.

Messi against Mexico >>>>> Ronaldo at this WC.

Ronaldo has had the biggest decline I have ever seen of a major player, kicked out of United, and no elite club wants him. Was rejected by everyone last summer. I know this is a hard pill for you to swallow but it's the truth.

And Ronaldo has comfortably been worse than Messi this WC, even Messi against Saudi created more chances than Ronaldo ever did against anyone this tourney so far. Bruno has been Portugal's best player while Messi has been Argentina's best.

Ronaldo is way too old now.

And Bynumite having a meltdown over Ronaldo's crappy play. Portugal dragging Ronaldo much like Pepe did in 2016.

Current WC stats based on 2 games favor Messi a lot more. Pay attention:

https://ibb.co/qJQr9Pj

Every single goal Argentina has had so far Messi either scored or assisted. Ronaldo just 1 undeserved penalty out of the 5 goals Portugal have had. So stop talking out your ass.
